R.M. Archer has been an avid reader since the time she could first make out words, and has always been a lover of story. That interest developed into a love of writing when she was seven (though those first attempts have long-since been incinerated), and she's been pursuing a career as an author ever since. Archer believes that art can change the culture and aims to write YA speculative fiction that thoughtfully explores a variety of worldviews through the lens of her own Christian perspective.

In addition to writing fiction, Archer keeps up a non-fiction blog of writing tips and book reviews, and worldbuilding is her favorite topic to blog about.

Yeah, it was actually really interesting how much Asian fantasy came out all at once in 2022, lol.

As for what inspired me to write it (back in 2018)... I think it might have just hinged on the name Duyên and the fact that I had a half-Vietnamese best friend at the time. I was exploring a more diverse array of cultures via my worldbuilding and Asia seemed like a logical next step, I guess. In the end, Virilia took inspiration from Vietnam, Japan, and China.(less)

I always hate this question, lol. It's often hard for me to pinpoint the source of an idea.

I started The Shadow Raven after reading Heartless by Marissa Meyer, and Nissa was inspired off of Jest. Um... that's the only part of it I can really identify, lol. The world already existed, so I just fit the characters into it.

With The Last Assassin I wanted to see what happened to Catessa after the end of The Heart of the Baenor, so I wrote it.

I don't remember where the idea for The King's Paladin came from, but before too long I decided the three of them would be cool if they were interconnected, so I started having a lot of fun intertwining them and now they're 100% inseparable, lol.(less)

Ready to Publish? 4 Indications to Look For

It can be hard to tell when a book is ready to be sent out into the world–especially if you’ve never published before–but developing the skill to identify when a book is ready can be critical to the publishing process, whether you’re trying to minimize agent rejections or you’re indie publishing and have to serve as your own gatekeeper. Ultimately, one develops this skill primarily as one writes a

“It seems you have saltwater and stardust in your veins.”
R.M. Archer, Lost Girl

“Ryuu wrapped her in his arms again and held her tight. “I don’t know what to believe, Duyên. I don’t know how likely you are to block out the dragons again. I don’t know what Gossalu’s plan is, or if she even has one. But I hope. I hope that this will pass. I hope that both of us are afraid for nothing. And I will love you whether hope or fear wins out.”
R.M. Archer, Calligraphy Guild

“Duyên watched Lonpaia’s deft fingers work for a moment. “Why are the gods so fickle?
“Why are men so fickle? It’s simply the way of things.
“But shouldn’t gods be better? Duyên looked back up at Lonpaia.
Lonpaia paused her work and turned toward Duyên. “That’s what we all wish for. And yet I can’t help but think they’re simply men with the powers of the universe at their fingertips.”
R.M. Archer, Calligraphy Guild

“As we become obsessed with Jesus, we’ll begin to reflect His image to those around us. Our speech will transform. Our character will look more like His. Why? Because our lives will always mirror the idols of our hearts.”
Tessa Emily Hall, Coffee Shop Devos: Daily Devotional Pick-Me-Ups for Teen Girls

“When we reach the end of our short lives on earth, Jesus isn’t going to ask us how many followers we had on social media; He’s going to ask us how many of those lives we touched.”
Tessa Emily Hall, Coffee Shop Devos: Daily Devotional Pick-Me-Ups for Teen Girls

“He’s not going to applaud us for becoming famous during our lifetimes; He’s going to ask us how we used our spotlight to bring Him glory.
He’s not going to ask us how many trophies and awards we received; He’s going to ask us how we used our gifts to build the body of Christ.”
Tessa Emily Hall, Coffee Shop Devos: Daily Devotional Pick-Me-Ups for Teen Girls

“The next time you find yourself ashamed of your reflection, put on your new lens. Not the lens of the world, but the lens of the Word. The only lens that will reveal your true reflection.”
Tessa Emily Hall, Coffee Shop Devos: Daily Devotional Pick-Me-Ups for Teen Girls

“Because the right things are always the hard ones, the ones you don’t really want to do, the ones that are easier to just talk about and expect from others but to never do yourselves.”
Miranda Marie, Azalei's Fall
