Author Brook Allen has a passion for history. Her newest project, West of Santillane spotlights history from a little closer to home. It’s the story of Julia Hancock, who married famed explorer, William Clark. Each character of this thrilling, adventurous period was researched throughout southwest Virginia and into Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota. It launched in March of 2024.

Brook belongs to the Historical Novel Society and attends conferences as often as possible to study craft and meet fellow authors. In 2019, her novel Antonius: Son of Rome won the Coffee Pot Book Club Book of the Year Award. In 2020, it was honored with a silver medal in the international Reader’s Favorite Book Reviewers Book Awards and then won Fi

Women didn't often have it easy in those days, so just showing up cold-turkey wouldn't even be safe. I'd also want to be certain I could return.(less)

This was an extraordinary read, and I highly recommend it. Albanese is an expert in walking a reader next to a character, step by step, thought by thought, deed by deed. I was mesmerized.

When starting the book, I really didn't know what to expect. I love ancient history, but am NOT a fan of fantasy or magical realism.

That being said, Miller is truly an artist with words. She is a master of writing. I was as enraptured with Circe's c

“was impressed by Marcellus’s eagerness. Tomorrow he would be riding out with five legions to a war from which he might never return, yet there was only excitement in his voice. I thought of the dangers he would face and the painted Gallic fighters hiding in the thickly wooded passes. I was sure that Isis would never be so cruel as to abandon someone so young and filled with promise. But then why had she abandoned Ptolemy and Caesarion? Where had she been when Antyllus was murdered at the base of Caesar’s statue and my parents lost their kingdom to a thin, weak sapling of a man?”

“Warriors shape the world, not wizards, Helios. We don’t have soldiers. We don’t have generals. But we have the emperor’s ear. I want to protect Egypt and if I have to win the emperor’s trust to do it, I will.”

“Octavia may have shared in common their love for the emperor, or perhaps their dependence upon him, but their unity only ran so deep. They were not friends or companions by choice, but bitter rivals.”

“Agrippa may seem simple,â€ I protested, “but there’s a genius about him and not just with his military tactics. Have you seen his projects? The roads, the aqueducts, and the buildings! He can most certainly read.”

“I am entering on the history of a period rich in disasters, frightful in its wars, torn by civil strife, and even in peace full of horrors. Four emperors perished by the sword.â€ —TACITUS”

Brook Allen Fellow author, Linnea Tanner wrote a lovely review on my book, Antonius: Son of Rome, then wanted to interview me. The kindness authors share to one another is just one of the mind-blowing things about being a writer. Love my author friends!
