Joining the 21st century
My thanks to Rob Cain of “Ancient Rome Refocused for the chance to venture into the world of the podcast. This would have happened some years back but Rob has only now managed to wrestle the recording from the grip of a malevolent computer. I’d forgotten how interesting the conversation was, and was pleasantly surprised to find I didn’t sound as nervous as I’d felt. As an added bonus also holds brief notes on the history of opium from Matthew Leigh Embleton. Ruso would approve.

Eboracum Roman Festival 2023

Romans, Ancient Britons and modern barbarians gathered in the gardens of the Yorkshire Museum last weekend in the annual celebration of York’s Roman history.
Astute readers of “Semper Fidelis may remember that this is where most of the story is set.
Plenty of family-friendly action took place in the Circus Maximus, including the wild racing of cardboard hobby-horses around the lawns in the sunshine. As I don’t have photo permission from all the riders parents, please use your im...June 28, 2022

Kindle bargains for UK and Australia!
I’ve saved this till after midday as, despite appearances, it’s not an April Fool. Amazon UK really have knocked down the price of all 8 full-length Medicus novels to 99p each (!) on Kindle until 30 April, and I’m told that they’re $1.49 each on this month, too. That’s a whole series* for £7.92 / $11.92!
Clicking on the picture should get you to the UK deals (and a photo of me that really needs updating sorry).
The link should take you to the page where the Australia...

Bloomsbury Black Friday Bonanza
UPDATE This offer is now closed. Thanks to everyone who managed to catch it, and sorry to those who didn’t. If it happens again I will spread the word ASAP!
This is hard to believe, but I’ve just seen it on Twitter, so it must be true. Just for today, Bloomsbury USA are putting out all 8 full-length MEDICUS books on Kindle for $3.99 !!! It’s for US (and maybe Canadian??) readers only, I’m afraid, but if that’s you (or a friend who needs a trip to Roman Britain) here’s the .

A one-day bargain for US readers 18 June
The blue bird of Twitter has flown across the Atlantic to say that (Ruso and Tilla’s visit to Aquae Sulis) is only $1.99 on Kindle in the USA today!
It might be on to Amazon.com but I can’t tell from here in England. Anyway, once you find it, you don’t need a Kindle to read it. Amazon have Mysterious Powers: their ebooks work on lots of other devices as well.

A sudden flurry of activity
Well, having been quietly hibernating for the last few months, I’ll be springing into action and giving not one but two online talks in early May.
Should any kind folk care to join me, there’s no charge for either of the talks and both are going out via Zoom, so they should be accessible wherever you are. That’s assuming all the technology co-operates. (The Romans, of course, never had this problem. But then, they could only speak to people within shouting distance.)
First up: I’ll be join...

Blades and Banter, the postscript
Big thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday evening! It was a privilege to be invited into your computer screens and I hope you enjoyed it. When I finally worked out how to read the comments, they were a delight.
Hopefully nobody ran screaming from the room at the gory bits (unfortunately when you let a former vet loose with someone who writes about a Roman medic, there may be a little too much information) and please, please, if you have a toothache, call the dentist. Even if you can get...
