How to Blog to Sell Books

Building a blog following can be an effective book selling tool. However, although most authors have blogs, many use them simply to list information about their books. Whilst promotional posts are useful to existing readers, they are unlikely to help draw in new ones. In order to attract a following, you need to post a variety of engaging content. Once you've got readers' attention, you can drop in the odd 'Buy my book' post from time to time, with effective results.

Thank You Owen Jones - A Refreshing Perspective on Railway Suicides

As people who follow me will know, I feel particularly strongly about respecting the victims of suicide. Unfortunately many people do not, viewing deceased victims as selfish creatures with no concern for anybody but themselves. I was delighted when I read by Owen Jones, calling for a change in attitudes towards those who take their lives on British railways.

His train was stopped due to a suicide and although many people seemed saddened by the tragedy, somebody else tutted and ot...

Sex Scenes in Books - When to Use Them

Something I ponder frequently is if and when to narrate sex in books. When should I explain exactly what the characters get up to, and when should I leave it up to the reader's imagination?

Fortunately, thanks to the recent erotica boom, it is now much easier to make our decisions based on what's best for our books, rather than having to shy away from graphic sex so as not to shock the average reader. Obviously in depends on our audiences, but we are much more free to pluck from the fields of...

Author Reviews Violate Amazon's TOCs - Seriously?

In recent weeks there has been a lot of controversy surrounding authors reviewing books on Amazon. A covers the story in more detail. It seems that authors are now banned from reviewing all books because they are seen to be in direct competition with book products.

As an author, I don't see myself as somebody in competition with other authors. If another writer publishes a book similar to one of mine, I'm delighted to see it do well both for the author and because...

How to Get Noticed on Indie Book Bargains

Following an alarming article, , I have decided to write a post to help indie authors get listed on , a site that, despite its name, currently lists books published using a variety of methods. I am one of the administrators for Indie Book Bargains and I am happy to reveal that we aim for indie books to make up at least 90% of our listings by summer 2013.

Indie Book Bargains is an internet enterprise that sends out a daily...

Q&A - The Ice Marathon

Tonight, I will answer questions about my new book, . It is a novella, which will be released later this week, for Kindle.

What was the one thing that made you decide The Ice Marathon would be your next book? (from , London)

I wanted to write something that suited the frosty season. After the silliness of , I felt like writing something a bit more sombre. The Ice Marathon is full of cold weather, personal struggles and drama, with an injection of fe...

S.O.S. Royal Brompton Children's Cardiac Services

One of the issues touched upon in is heart disease in babies. This brought to mind a campaign I've heard a lot about in the news recently - the campaign against the closure of children's cardiac services at The Royal Brompton.

On the 16th February 2011 an NHS report was published which included recommendations to discontinue children's cardiac surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital.

The Brompton Foundation is a charity that exists to support families with children under the care of...
