“The human being is not a fallen being in need of redemption but rather a forgetful being who must be reminded of God and his own nature.”
Joseph E. B. Lumbard, Submission, Faith & Beauty: The Religion of Islam

“The academic stating that the Euro-American trained academic is better equipped to analyze and understand the texts and traditions of “the orient than are the people for whom these texts and traditions have been a central component of their civilizations is no different than the politician who maintains that the peoples of “the orient received better governance under western colonialism than they ever did when they governed themselves. The main difference is that it is no longer acceptable to make such statements in the realm of politics and governance.
This seems so obvious. But remarkably still needs to be said.”
Joseph E. B. Lumbard

“[....] "traditionalists" often end up incorporating collonialist understandings of other cultures and religions into their analyses. For example, the understanding of Hinduisim one gets from traditionalist writings draws in large part from the late 19th early 20th century European romanticization of Hinduism. Traditionalists are too often just as much a product of the intellectual environments in which they have learned and been trained. The very choice of what is "essential" and what is "accidental" is often conditioned by this intellectual heritage. When perennialist writers are not aware of this, they risk being just as much a group of western trained intellectuals projecting their "essentialims" on the world as any other clique of westernized intellectuals.”
Joseph E. B. Lumbard

“Most learning is not the result of instruction. It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting. Most people learn best by being "with it," yet school makes them identify their personal, cognitive growth with elaborate planning and manipulation.”
Ivan Illich, Deschooling Society

“Hatred, which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man who hated, and this was an immutable law.”
James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

“People who prefer to believe the worst of others will breed war and religious persecutions while the world lasts.”
Dorothy L. Sayers, The Letters of Dorothy L. Sayers 1899-1936: The Making of a Detective Novelist

“When you hate somebody...
you give him chance mastering your heart.”
Toba Beta, Master of Stupidity

“Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child's nature.”
Charlotte Mason
