Roderick Gordon is the author of the Tunnels series of books. Born in 1960, he grew up in Highgate, North London, and eventually went to University College where he dabbled in genetics and listened to Joy Division. After graduating without the faintest idea what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he spent some time in the wilderness when he played in a few bands, then somehow fell into a job doing corporate finance for an investment bank in the City of London. He genuinely thought this was all that the future held for him until he was made redundant in 2001.
But Roderick surprised himself by working on a book with help from an old university friend and, in 2005, he self-published it as The Highfield Mole, which caught the attention of

I've certainly got the beginning of a seventh book but I'm writing it for myself at the moment because there are no plans from my publisher to extend the series. If there was a minor miracle and the TV series became a reality, this might be enough to encourage him to release another one. Or perhaps if another several thousand very loyal and kind readers like you got in touch with him, it might change his mind! And as for Elliott, she really thought she was alone in the centre of the world ... for a while ...(less)

The other part of the equation was what Brian WIlliams had heard about the Williamson tunnels in Liverpool - there had been various myths knocking around about them while he was growing up, but the one that caught both our imaginations was when some workmen had been working on a road and unexpectedly knocked through to a cobbled street below. I never knew if the story was really true, but it sparked the idea for the Colony, and gave us the impetus to start the story. Do say hello to your boys from me! Kind regards, Roderick(less)

message 65: by Mandy

Mandy OMG! Really! I loved Spiral and I can't wait to see how this whole adventure ends. How long do we have to wait for the release?

Silverwolf Oooh! Suspense is unbearable... :D

Roderick Hi Mandy! There certainly is another one - I'm just writing the final chapters now.

message 62: by Mandy

Mandy Is there another book after "Spiral". kinda ended with a cliffhanger. i really hope there is!

The longer a good thing lasts (like Tunnels), the better in my opinion :D.

Cool. Missed that.

Hi Silverwolf's mum, unfortunately I have no influence over the movie, or any means to talk directly with the producers or director - all my news comes through the publishers here in the UK. As regards casting, I bet the producers will be looking for young actors for the main parts, but all I can suggest is that you try to send something through to Relativity Media. You can google their website. Sorry I can't help with this! Roderick

Roderick Hi Silverwolf, and the answer is that there are some "hotspots" where the combination of the radioactivity and rock under pressure drives up the temperature (it's discussed in Deeper), but there is certainly no molten core at the centre of the planet!

Silverwolf Oooh... here's a question for you Roderick:

If the world is hollow in Tunnels, how do you explain geothermal heat?

OK :D

Aw. I really don't like it when your waiting on a movie, and the directors think that they can spend all the time they need and just diddle around when SO many people are waiting on them.

LOLZ, about them not breathing part.

That's reassuring that it will at least look like London. Wouldn't it be easier just to film it there though.

I could try out, but one problem...i kind of suck at asking... i mean not Miley Cirus bad...but pretty bad.

message 51: by AnnieB

Silverwolf Hi Roderick, trust me when I say that Silverwolf would be the perfect candidate to play Rebecca. We are all passionate fans of the Tunnels series and she is a very talented actress. I realise I am biased, however if you met her, you would see what I mean!!

Keep up the good work. Can't wait for the final chapter.

Love,

- Silverwolf's Mum

Uhh... me again (Silverwolf). Sorry about that, just to clarify: not my idea. She may be embarassing (blush, blush), but she is right. Heheh.

message 49: by Silverwolf (last edited Jun 25, 2012 08:08AM)

Silverwolf Aww... waaah... I wanted to be Rebecca. :(

Roderick Hi AnnieB! Relativity Media haven't actually got the cameras rolling yet but we're told that the project may go into preproduction soon - they've been working on it for such a long time that I'm not holding my breath any longer (makes it very difficult to write when you're not breathing).
And it may be shot in the US, but we've been assured that the sets will look like England ...

message 47: by AnnieB

AnnieB i think there already filming it...

message 46: by AnnieB

AnnieB I found this on tunnelsthebook.com...

A movie of the first book is currently being developed by Relativity Media in the US. News of how it's progressing will eventually be posted here.

message 45: by AnnieB

AnnieB Did you know the lord of the rings was filmed in new zealand? and i think that was an american movie...but i could be wrong.

ok, random fact over.

Calm down. It's all ok. Even if an american company does do it, they probably will still film in the UK.

message 43: by AnnieB

AnnieB hello? SPOILER ALERT! only read the tunnels freefall and deeper! SHHH

Silverwolf Beth wrote: "spiral was epic! why does Eddie keep getting beaten up? its not fair, its always my fave characters that get beaten up. still spiral was REALLY good. what are the styx planing in the next book? any..."

Because Eddie is a styx, and everyone blames him for the stuff that his people have done (also, he killed - or at least helped to kill - Fiona). But yah, he is cool :).

Cerberus Flame spiral was epic! why does Eddie keep getting beaten up? its not fair, its always my fave characters that get beaten up. still spiral was REALLY good. what are the styx planing in the next book? any news about the film?

sure the 6th book will be brill :-)

Silverwolf Roderick, are they filming Tunnels in the states, or over here?

message 39: by Silverwolf (last edited Jun 14, 2012 08:19AM)

Silverwolf Well... I'm not quite as Mortisha-esque (Addams Family referance) as Rebbecca, but I'm sure with a little make-up, I wouldn't be far off. Also, I just remembered, I think it was an american company that bought the movie rights, so they could be doing it out there... :( (NOOO!!)

message 38: by AnnieB

AnnieB haha! well, i dont know what you look like... but that would be kind of ironic!

message 37: by Silverwolf (last edited May 28, 2012 08:21AM)

Silverwolf Aww... such a shame. Sorry, Anne. I probably won't anyway, but I am determined. Could u imagine me as Rebbecca? (*does a quiet evil laugh and pulls scary face* boy sitting next to me pulls worried face & shifts over a little* - joke). LOL.

message 36: by AnnieB

AnnieB uh, not me. im uh... all the way across the atlantic ocean...

Silverwolf Can't wait for the movie... is there a way I could be in it? even as an extra?

Silverwolf It gets better... esp. in spiral....

message 33: by AnnieB

AnnieB ya, just found that out at the end of freefall.

Silverwolf Will's already in love - he's got elliot (sorry if ya didn't know that yet).

message 31: by AnnieB

AnnieB Ya, but i like will's personality more. Oh, finished freefall BTW. Total coolness! OMG! SO AWESOME!(I can't believe how american that sounded. HA!)

Silverwolf I hope that Will or Chester finds love in the last book - and a good match too. Preferabley Chester - as he deserves it (not that Will doesn't) but Chester had no real reason to follow Will: he was just being loyal. He deserves a reward, no?

message 29: by AnnieB (last edited Apr 14, 2012 10:47AM)

AnnieB I loved how you said at the end "For the last few moments of Sarah's life, she was smiling," that was SO cool, because of how her whole life she had been worrying and hiding. And two rebecca's!! I was like "woah!" it would be so confusing since they are both named rebecca. If i had a twin like that, i would feel like i could never be my own person, you know?

Roderick Anne, so pleased you enjoyed it. The ending was a little bleak but it was how I felt at the time. Sarah's death affected me much more than Cal's because I identified so closely with her. And Silverwolf, the non-Tunnels book hasn't got a publisher yet. I've just changed to a new literary agent so everything's been up in the air for a while and, who knows, maybe I'll never find anyone who wants to release it. It's quite an odd story ...

message 27: by AnnieB

AnnieB Cal was my favorite character! I was sooooo sad when you killed him off. Loved the ending!

message 26: by AnnieB

AnnieB FINISHED DEEPER! FREEFALL HERE I COME!

message 25: by Silverwolf (last edited Apr 07, 2012 03:35AM)

Silverwolf Heheh... I guess it would be less fun if we could control our imagination :). So has the new book been published yet, or are you gonna put us through more suspense :D?

message 24: by AnnieB

AnnieB Ha ya, im in the middle of Deeper right now. LOVE IT! only feedback is that it's going kind of slow. But that's it.

Roderick I finished a non-Tunnels book in February
and couldn't believe how quickly the words were landing on the page. I suppose that's because I've been thinking about the story for so long. But now I'm trying to get into gear on T6, and the writing is painfully slow. I wish this was something I could control!

message 22: by AnnieB

AnnieB ya, sorry silverwolf. What book are you writing Mr. Gordon?

Silverwolf Oh, OK, you're both forgiven ;D.

Roderick Silverwolf wrote: "Aww.. I'm feeling like a ghost in this conversation/thread... making sounds, but not being heard <:(."
Sorry, Silverwolf, have been working on the new book - I have to try to cut off a bit.

Silverwolf Aww.. I'm feeling like a ghost in this conversation/thread... making sounds, but not being heard <:(.
