Scott McCloskey counted the dead with Crom across many ragged copies of The Savage Sword of Conan throughout much of the 1980s. Though the issues are now but tarnished steel, the influence on his writing is as pure as a platinum blade. Today he stands beside his wife and daughters on the eastern coast of the United States with a gaggle of Russian Wolfhounds to mind, but hooves still beat in time to the endless ride across the scorched sands in his heart.

Scott's typewriter sometimes emits sword and sorcery, YA, and even middle grade adventure fiction by day, but is subject to occasional fits of lycanthropy, and is known to go bump in the backwoods Pennsylvanian night.

It’s certainly hard to go wrong mixing bugs with fear. I could say that this book went for the lowest hanging fruit in that regard, but then I read it, and found that I could not. If you’re going to make purple by mixing good old red and blue (where ...more

Topics Mentioning This Author

Thomas Paine
“I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his own opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it.”
Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason

Sigmund Freud
“Religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from the fact that it falls in with our instinctual desires.”
Sigmund Freud, New Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis

Lewis Carroll
“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Thomas Jefferson
“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and Constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”
Thomas Jefferson
