I'm so very sorry about your friend. So many people are unaware of the lasting effects of childhood trauma and how insurmountable that pain can seem.

Wishing you peace.....(less)

When I first drafted this back in 2010, I was reading a lot of YA about romance, but not enough about the intense bond you have with your friends when you're in high school and college. So many of my closest friends are the people I met during that time and I wanted to capture the love and bond that comes from friendships formed during those important years.

The premise, which hinges on cellular memory, guilt, love, confusion, and really trying to figure out who you are and what it is exactly that defines a person, is something I've always been interested in. (less)

I'm Not a Fangirl (but U2 Changed My Life)

I am NOT the fangirl type. I always tell people that, and it's pretty much true. But I find that I need a new language when describing my (admittedly) one-sided connection to U2.

1982. I was 15 and had lost my mom unexpectedly less than two years before. I met a boy. You know the story. Except it's funny how you usually don't understand what's happening while it's happening. The boy and I bonded o

“I'm really, really tired of the past”
Helene Dunbar, These Gentle Wounds

“He said he didn’t even know that anyone our age was paying attention to what was going on. A chill goes through me. Being afraid of some enemy you can’t see, regardless of how big or deadly is one thing. Starting to recognize the people lying dead on the battlefield is something else entirely.”
Helene Dunbar, We Are Lost and Found

“I didn’t do this to piss you off. It’s just who I am. And I can’t ignore what’s going on in the world. People are dying. How can I just stand by and watch? How could anyone?”
Helene Dunbar, We Are Lost and Found
