This is one of the best books on music I’ve ever read. I love jazz, and I’m a fan of Kind of Blue. If push comes to shove, I’ll side with some of the more obscure stuff mostly Jazz Messengers and Lee Morgan sessions but of course I love Miles Davi ...more |

"An entertaining audiobook. Quirky, cringey, and hilarious, this one has strong characters. "

This is probably not the book to start on Okorafor with. I read and mostly enjoyed her Noor, but from what I can tell this is more of a prequel to her Who Fears Death, which I haven’t read. As a result, this reads like a book that has something a ...more |

As far as I’m concerned, Alan Moore could have taken a victory lap if he’d written only Watchmen and V for Vendetta. They’re genre-shaping works that still have resonance. I don’t know a lot of the other graphic novel stuff League of Extraordinary ...more | |

I’m new to this story, so I am maybe more impressed with this book than someone coming to it with more familiarity. Still, as a portrait of a near-obsession, it has its moments beyond the amazing story at its heart. And that story is amazing. With apol ...more |

“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing
1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.
My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.
If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
