The lack of gravity changes things, perhaps even the human mind.

“Whew, what a year! I’m building a new perspective. I’ll need it myself,�� Ray starts. The working title for his next thriller is “Murder on the Moon.�� It’s about life and environmental struggles among a group of people who permanently live on the lunar surface in the year 2054.

“I’ve spent a lot of time researching and imagineering tools and conjuring up situations that might be encountered by earthlings when we go mine the surface of the moon. Here’s an example�� They talk to their shared computer like a friend. And the computer is seemingly omniscient, it’s everywhere.�� “AIRI�� (Artificial Intelligence Response Interface), the moon-global communications system sometimes needs to get private input from people, like a password for secure data.

Rather than speaking his password into the open room, Lt. Anderson Cronauer (Crony) just holds up his hands, wiggles his fingers, and says, “AIRI, give me control over here.�� Then Crony air-types his response. Like air-guitar, he uses an imaginary typewriter in the air or on a table. Tiny tattoos with magnetic ink on his finger-tips give him the advantage.

“I personally want to watch televised Moonball games.�� Ray has invented basketball in a gravitationally limited world. With only 6% of earth’s gravity, on the moon, the ball trajectory like other things is mostly a straight line. Surrealistically the players seem to fly around the court.

It’s not all fun and games, though. Limited gravity or something similar seems to work deviously on the human psyche. One’s usually stable mindset is often vertically challenged by both unexpected situations and other moon-bound people.

Is the day of human book editors going the way of traditional publishing?

As better tuned software editing programs proliferate, literary writers and authors are being passionately seduced to reap the highly acclaimed benefits of today’s new electronic applications. To ensure the accuracy of punctuation, spelling, grammar, and correct word usage, many modern tools are seen as a boon to fledgling writers. Realistically, many of the “boon�� claims are true, and some are just edgy marketing hype. In this article, we will briefly examine the “state of the state�� for book editing as we know it today for both electronic and human editing services.

Objectively

If a writer assumes that any one of the modern electronic editing utilities is “the�� expert, he (or she) might blindly incorporate its “corrections�� into a blossoming work. However, taken at face value, important errors can be made which can inadvertently harm the author’s entire intention. Additionally, subtle implications may be lost and/or flawed reader interpretations assumed.

Candidly

The same can be said for the subjective nature of advice from a human editor. It’s long been argued that a written work given to five different editors will result in five different opinions of how it should be re-written. True, most humans follow a strict set of rules, authoritative guides like The Chicago Manual of Style or the New Oxford Style Manual, but the similarity in human editor final results end there. Furthermore, the fact that one definitive style is not a standard for the entire industry is somewhat confusing for writers of the English language and leaves room for reader misinterpretation and author misguidance. The argument can also be noted here that, “many-a-great author’s works would have been ruined by ‘p���DZ����� ��徱�پ��Բ�.��

Frankly

If today’s writer scans his work through a dozen software programs and five human editors, the end result will likely be very dissimilar to his own original thought. The work may even lose the author’s original passion and worse, perhaps even completely kill the author’s interest in re-editing and publishing the work.

Let’s face it, re-editing, redacting, re-writing—is the bigger part of the writer’s job. After all, twelve rewrites to achieve a final draft are not uncommon for a well-apportioned author.

We found it interesting that for Accuracy and Added Value, the consensus was averaged very closely (all scores in a 1.4 point range).

Price/Value clearly has the greatest distinction (a 2.5 spread), but with the Value portion of that analysis being subjective. This result surprised us. Some testers placed a much higher value on human eyes. However, the outstanding focus of the analysis was on price.
