The Biggest New Fantasy and Sci-Fi Books for Spring

Posted by Sharon on March 13, 2023

Science fiction and fantasyÌýfans, we bring glad tidings.
Ìý
The spring season is positively stacked with great new books in and around the genres of science fiction and fantasy. We’ve collected the most anticipated of the lot here, as determined by Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ regularsâ€ Want to Read shelves and ratings from early readers (all titles here are scoring 3.5 stars and above in that regard).
Ìý
Experienced SFF heads will recognize some of the veteran names here, including Martha Wells (demons!), T.J. Klune (robots!), and Ann Leckie (translators!). It’s also always good policy to pay attention to whatever Cory Doctorow is writing about—in this case, cryptocurrency and the surprisingly dangerous world of forensic accounting.Ìý
Ìý
Traditionalists will note that there are not one but two modern-day King Arthur tales on the way. Genre benders should enjoy the SF/horror hybrids and science fantasy explorations. You’ll also find some fascinating variations on familiar themes, including a funny First ContactÌýtale and cozy fantasy with anÌý83-year-old Chosen One.

Scroll over the book cover images below for more details, and add anything interesting to your Want to Read shelf.

Anissa Thanks for the recs Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ! I've added some of the science fiction books to my TBR list. Also, thank you for separating science fiction from fantasy.

I really enjoyed Cronin's The Ferryman .

Isabell Wow! More than half of those sound intriguing!

message 4: by Jim (new)

Jim Still waiting for Gaiman's "Neverwhere" follow-up, AND Clive Barker's next "Abarat" books...

T FYI the book linked off the article for "an 83-year-old Chosen One" appears to be the wrong book! It should link to The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher! Which I am SUPER excited for!

Kathy KS I, too, am glad you separated the fantasy from the science fiction. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I miss space fiction and find it hard to find on lists, especially with a more optimistic turn. I did find a few I thought sounded good, but I need to go back and read some lead-in novels first. And one that sounded promising looks like it may move in to horror, which I'd rather avoid.

So, I found a little and may end up reading some of the others in both genres.

message 7: by ErsatzCulture (new)

ErsatzCulture I assume the Larry Correia book should be Tower of Silence (#4 in that series), as the currently linked Destroyer of Worlds (#3) came out in 2020.

Steve Beaulieu Based on publishers who paid us to say this*

message 9: by Nick (new)

Nick Ray I also appreciate the separation of scifi from fantasy. Thanks

message 10: by Jim (new)

Jim S Thanks for the recommendations! I lovedThe Ferryman by Justin Cronin! Currently reading Witch King, but I don't know if any witch book will ever top the Esoteric Alchemy series by Ryan Kurr. Best witchy fantasy I've read yet.

message 11: by Paulo (new)

Paulo Lourenço Excited for Cory Doctorow and Ann Leckie!

message 12: by Carol (new)

Carol Gleason-Rechner I checked four Want to Reads in Fantasy and nine in Science Fiction. Thank-you for the separation of these two genres. I enjoy reading them both, but my heart belongs to space!
