I have read The Giver and see that the next 3 books are "companions" to it but not sequels with the same characters. Do they need to be read in order? I have access to The Messenger now, but not to Gathering Blue.

Liam Murray Yes, sort of. You can read "The Giver" before "Gathering Blue" or vice versa; however, "Messenger" opens where "Gathering Blue" left off, and features鈥辞谤别Yes, sort of. The Forest's actions feed off the Trademaster and his twisted manipulation of people's desires when he gives them what they want in exchange for their higher impulses and energies that had made the Village such a welcoming, compassionate place, full of loving kindness, in the first place. When the three characters linked their powers together, the power of good overcame the power of evil. Shows what humanity is capable of, if we could only get our act together!(less)

So Jonas became the Leader in this book but what about Gabe?? Was he the Mentor?

Lievebloem In the beginning of the book when Matty describes Village for the first time, Matty mentiones Mentor tutoring an eight year old Gabe, who was to playf鈥辞谤别In the beginning of the book when Matty describes Village for the first time, Matty mentiones Mentor tutoring an eight year old Gabe, who was to playfull in his younger years and now needed to catch up on studying. I finished The Giver and Gathering Blue but am confused because they don't seem to be related. Is Gathering Blue set in another community in another time? Also, is Matty in the Messenger the same Matt in Gathering Blue?

Leah Gathering Blue is set at about the same time as The Giver. Messenger and Son bring characters from The Giver and Gathering Blue together. Matty in Mes鈥辞谤别Gathering Blue is set at about the same time as The Giver. Messenger and Son bring characters from The Giver and Gathering Blue together. Matty in Messenger is Matt from Gathering Blue (but now 8 years older, 14).(less)
