I felt a deeper connection and it touched me more emotionally. So I'd go with Speak, but they are both beautiful books.(less)

Twelve year olds know so much more now about these topics than years before. And yet we still don't talk about it with them. I think this book is a good way to approach those topics. It does have mature themes, but they aren't graphic. And its REAL. That's what I loved about this book. Kids today deal with these things and for them to be able to read about it is a great thing. The trees seen throughout the story represent the trials that she goes through while dealing with her depression and hiding the rape from even herself. Then, like the tree in her front yard, she is able to shed what was making the whole tree sick and grow up to be big and healthy. So, because she was able to speak up, she could deal with this obstacle in her life and move onto bigger and better things.(less)
