Uneducated--maybe, naive, easily led, gullible, yes, but probably also, desperate, as was Jurgis and his Lithuanian family. Using an encompassing adjective such as "stupid" is pure racial prejudice--reinforcing the prevailing opinion. If this is an example of the "ethnic flavor" that had to be censored in later editons, then I suggest more censorship might be in order, (less)
