Some of McDermid's books, especially in the Hill/Jordan series, contain very grizzly, graphic violent scenes. I've stopped reading them as a result. The Karen Piries series doesn't contain such horrific scenes. How is this one? She's such a good writer, but have to be careful of nightmares.

Although there is lots of tension built around two specific capers, played out through a substantial portion of the book, there is only a single murder containing limited detail. That death is sad as opposed to scary, as you will be attached to the victim. Lots of period detail to be enjoyed if, like me, you are a similar age to Allie Burns.(less)

Are we all agreed that it's a masterstroke by Val McD to go back to 1979? Seeing as Still Life was set just before the first lockdown, I was wondering how she would deal with Covid in her novels. I for one would prefer to read a novel that doesn't deal with it at the moment, and I think she's a genius for taking a break from the present! Thoughts anyone?

As to inspired, well Denise Mina's Paddy Meehan trilogy was set about three year's later in a Glasgow newsroom and revolves around a female journalist in a man's world ...(less)

Anne I wish that all spoilers would be marked for sure. I think I read the one you're talking about and it gave something away that didn't ruin the book foâ€¦m´Ç°ù±ðI wish that all spoilers would be marked for sure. I think I read the one you're talking about and it gave something away that didn't ruin the book for me by any means, but which definitely took away from any surprise in it. I've come to realize I need to hold off on reading reviews on GR (at least from reviewers who I'm not familiar with) until after the book has been read.(less)
