Deborah White asked:

Are we all agreed that it's a masterstroke by Val McD to go back to 1979? Seeing as Still Life was set just before the first lockdown, I was wondering how she would deal with Covid in her novels. I for one would prefer to read a novel that doesn't deal with it at the moment, and I think she's a genius for taking a break from the present! Thoughts anyone?

Clive Grewcock If it worked for you it worked for you. Tbh I found it readable, but average in the nicest sense of the word, but that is my view. As to inspired, well Denise Mina's Paddy Meehan trilogy was set about three year's later in a Glasgow newsroom and revolves around a female journalist in a man's world ...
Anna I think many writers have used this technique to some extent. I've read a few that have been set a couple of years pre pandemic. It also gives the characters, if it's a series, a but more longevity.
