Born in 1911 in R膬葯inari, a small village in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, raised under the rule of a father who was a Romanian Orthodox priest and a mother who was prone to depression, Emil Cioran wrote his first five books in Romanian. Some of these are collections of brief essays (one or two pages, on average); others are collections of aphorisms. Suffering from insomnia since his adolescent years in Sibiu, the young Cioran studied philosophy in the 鈥渓ittle Paris鈥� of Bucarest.

A prolific publicist, he became a well-known figure, along with Mircea Eliade, Constantin No茂ca, and his future close friend Eugene Ionesco (with whom he shared the Royal Foundation鈥檚 Young Writers Prize in 1934 for his first book, On the Heights of Despair).

Influenced by the German romantics, by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and the Lebensphilosophie of Schelling and Bergson, by certain Russian writers, including Chestov, Rozanov, and Dostoyevsky, and by the Romanian poet Eminescu, Cioran wrote lyrical and expansive meditations that were often metaphysical in nature and whose recurrent themes were death, despair, solitude, history, music, saintliness and the mystics (cf. Tears and Saints, 1937) 鈥� all of which are themes that one finds again in his French writings. In his highly controversial book, The Transfiguration of Romania (1937), Cioran, who was at that time close to the Romanian fascists, violently criticized his country and his compatriots on the basis of a contrast between such 鈥渓ittle nations鈥� as Romania, which were contemptible from the perspective of universal history and great nations, such as France or Germany, which took their destiny into their own hands.

After spending two years in Germany, Cioran arrived in Paris in 1936. He continued to write in Romanian until the early 1940s (he wrote his last article in Romanian in 1943, which is also the year in which he began writing in French). The break with Romanian became definitive in 1946, when, in the course of translating Mallarm茅, he suddenly decided to give up his native tongue since no one spoke it in Paris. He then began writing in French a book that, thanks to numerous intensive revisions, would eventually become the impressive 'A Short History of Decay' (1949) -- the first of a series of ten books in which Cioran would continue to explore his perennial obsessions, with a growing detachment that allies him equally with the Greek sophists, the French moralists, and the oriental sages. He wrote existential vituperations and other destructive reflections in a classical French style that he felt was diametrically opposed to the looseness of his native Romanian; he described it as being like a 鈥渟traight-jacket鈥� that required him to control his temperamental excesses and his lyrical flights. The books in which he expressed his radical disillusionment appeared, with decreasing frequency, over a period of more than three decades, during which time he shared his solitude with his companion Simone Bou茅 in a miniscule garret in the center of Paris, where he lived as a spectator more and more turned in on himself and maintaining an ever greater distance from a world that he rejected as much on the historical level (History and Utopia, 1960) as on the ontological (The Fall into Time, 1964), raising his misanthropy to heights of subtlety (The Trouble with being Born, 1973), while also allowing to appear from time to time a humanism composed of irony, bitterness, and preciosity (Exercices d鈥檃dmiration, 1986, and the posthumously published Notebooks).

Denied the right to return to Romania during the years of the communist regime, and attracting international attention only late in his career, Cioran died in Paris in 1995.

Benedire il lavoro e non temere la morte; possibile camminando fino l脿 dove sono questi luoghi inesistenti, queste citt脿 perfette, dove mai infrangere la legge del re n茅 mostrarsi meno che deboli. Che sia l'ambizione il nostro nutrimento, fino alla demenza e al risentimento. Continue sono le visioni di utopie senza speranza, di falsi paradisi, di isole riformate dove essere 猫 produrre. Cioran demolisce ogni illusione, deviando dal cinismo all'irreprensibile lucidit脿, verso la fonte fatale di quel dolore indimenticato che viene dai bassifondi dell'animo. Abbiamo il vizio della bont脿: discendendo verso la salvezza siamo sempre pi霉 ineguali. Una voce attuale che giunge dal 1960, in un tempo dentro al quale si cade, che ci spinge a inabissarci nell'entusiasmo e nella passione, in quella facolt脿 di volere che a volte 猫 specchio di una dannazione euforica, di una nostalgia umiliante. Disperati cerchiamo la via di uscita: ma sono i mezzi in errore, la storia e l'utopia, facili da confezionare, inadatti ad anticipare il momento della sconfitta. Minaccia di follia e solitudine, nel deserto dove ogni notte tocca accamparci.

Another deluge of Cioranosophy from the Romanian's mature period; perpetually ensconced in his hatefully beloved Paris and letting the fiery currents of a raging consciousness pour forth at propitious moments to be captured and imprisoned upon the page by means of the rigid strictures of the French language, a tongue whose very alienating syntax seemed to accommodate itself so well to the task of expressing this writer's brand of tortured genius. The six essays contained within reflect Cioran's world in 1960, when the re-ordering of the Soviet Union after the death of Stalin鈥攁nd its growing acclimatization with the West鈥攈ad skewed slightly the view from the Left Bank. Though by this point the nihilognostic firebrand could admit his growing appreciation for the comfortable and expansive liberties of democracy, he still recognized these trappings as inherently vitiating and self-destructive; similarly, though the awareness of the terrible savageries of Stalin and Hitler were then at perhaps their highest point, Cioran cannot help but confess his attraction to their wild and demoniac excesses as being of that spiritual darkness that was forever enjoined with the same deep springs from which sprang all of man's creative and artistic powers. It is within these depths that the self may find the eternal present, the absolute timelessness from which it was sundered by History and its bifurcated enablers, action and consciousness鈥攁nd which is erroneously sought for in visions of utopia and apocalypse.

Throughout the entirety the invigorating energies of political, cultural, and spiritual barbarism are compared and contrasted, praised and reviled, against the sedentary acmes and enervating lullabies of democratic civilization. History and Utopia thus is an exercise in juxtaposition and contradiction鈥攍ike all of Cioran's work鈥攗ndertaken amidst the untamed extremes where he so fervently loved to let loose his fertile imagination; but鈥攁gain as with all that he drew forth from his own inner maelstrom and enchained in words鈥攊t's the breathtakingly clear truths and searingly honest phrases that emerge from the storm, and the sheer lunar beauty of their expression, that makes them so worthwhile.

As they are, the people endure their ordeals, sometimes solicit them, and rebel against them only to rush into new ones, more horrible than the old. Revolution being their one luxury, they fling themselves into it, not so much to derive certain benefits from it or to improve their lot, as to acquire for themselves, too, the right to insolence, an advantage which consoles them for their habitual setbacks, but which they immediately lose once the privileges of chaos are abolished.

Restul, cvasitotalitatea oamenilor, desi se recunosc incapabili de asemenea sacrificii, tot nu renunta la cautarea unui alt timp; din contra, o fac cu indarjire, insa cu gandul sa-l plaseze in lumea aceasta, conform recomandarilor utopiei, care incearca sa impace prezentul vesnic cu istoria, dulceata varstei de aur cu ambitiile prometeice 鈥� sau, ca sa recurgem la terminologia biblica, incearca sa refaca Edenul cu mijloacele pacatului originar, redandu-i astfel noului Adam privilegiile celui din vechime. Nu inseamna asta, oare, sa incerci revizuirea Creatiunii?鈥�
鈥淰reti sa construiti o societate in care oamenii sa nu-si faca rau unii altora? Nu-i lasati sa intre in ea decat pe abulici.鈥�
鈥淥mul iubeste tensiunea, miscarea perpetua: catre ce sa se indrepte insa in interiorul perfectiunii? Este inapt pentru prezentul vesnic; in plus, il inspaimanta monotonia acestuia, punct vulnerabil al paradisului sub dubla lui infatisare 鈥� religioasa si utopica. Nu e oare istoria, in ultima instanta, rezultatul fricii noastre de plictiseala, ce ne va face mereu sa indragim savoarea si noutatea dezastrului, sa preferam orice urgie in locul stagnarii? Obsesia ineditului este principiul ce ne saboteaza mantuirea. Ne indreptam spre infern in masura in care ne indepartam de viata vegetativa, a carei pasivitate ar trebui sa fie Solutia universala, raspunsul suprem la toate intrebarile noastre; groaza pe care ne-o inspira ne-a transformat in aceasta hoarda de civilizati, monstri atotstiutori ce ignora esentialul. Suntem prea corupti si prea nerabdatori pentru a sti sa ne plictisim pe indelete, sa respiram si nimic mai mult, sa suportam cu demnitate nedreptatea de a fi, sa refuzam asteptarea, jugul sperantei, sa cautam o cale de mijloc intre cadavru si duh. Neindoielnic, nimic nu ne va reconcilia cu plictisul. Ca sa-i fim mai putin refractari, ar trebui, cu ajutorul cerului, sa cunoastem o plenitudine fara evenimente, voluptatea clipei neschimbatoare, deliciile identitatii. Dar un asemenea har e atat de potrivnic naturii noastre, incat suntem mai fericiti sa nu pogoare peste noi. Robiti diversitatii, extragem din ea acea suma constanta de deziluzii si de conflicte atat de necesara instinctelor noastre. Eliberati de griji si de orice oprelisti, am fi abandonati noua insine: betia ce ne-ar cuprinde atunci ne-ar face de mii de ori mai rai decat ne face servitudinea.鈥�

e) chiaroveggente al buio (quindi ubiquo)
f) cavaliere dell'apocalisse (uno a scelta) al trotto e finanche sorridente (chi l'avrebbe detto mai).

In this book, Cioran questions history as the only valid account of reality, demystifying Progress as the reason of why so much viciousness has been committed, wondering about the meaning of the utopias that enable the validity of institutions. He points out the inherent paradoxes of the human being and society and warns us against the illusions in which we usually fall on ourselves in relation to our participation in History and its Becoming.

隆Viejo querido! Muy pol茅mico, por momentos inaceptable pero siempre sangu铆neo y dolorosamente indiscreto y por eso se deja leer. Sangu铆neo y no c铆nico del todo o nihilista, porque Emil no se maneja por categor铆as, sino por humores y porque es un pensador que escribe desde las entra帽as y la experiencia propia. 驴Cu谩l experiencia? La de ser un hijo de Transilvania, la de ser hijo de un pope ortodoxo, la de tener en las venas sangre de Asia, de pueblos b谩rbaros. La experiencia de ser un troglodita en Par铆s. Pensar la historia a partir, entre otras cosas, de la biolog铆a (隆!) es inaceptable para cualquiera que se tome en serio las teor铆as pol铆ticas y por eso leerlo es casi siempre un ejercicio de indignaci贸n.

Para Emil la historia fluye, el pueblo es v铆ctima resignada, a veces de tiranos, a veces del propio desgaste moral/vital. Es en la utop铆a donde el individuo interrumpe de modo subterr谩neo el flujo de la historia, pretendiendo corregir injusticias, buscando alterar el estado de las cosas. Es en el pensamiento ut贸pico, donde el individuo juega a ser D*os. Y es en la praxis pol铆tica donde se concentran todos los vicios/dones en茅rgicos: es en la envidia, la crueldad, la soberbia, la b煤squeda de poder y venganza donde el individuo se planta y se hace cargo de su destino. El utopista, en el peor de los casos es un tirano en potencia o un ingenuo y un mal cristiano; en el mejor de los casos, es un enfermo, convulso, pre帽ado de devenir.

El problema, como siempre, es el fanatismo. Se hace cargo de haber sufrido de ciertos fanatismos pol铆ticos violentos en su juventud y en mucho este libro, escrito entre 1957 y 1960, es un inmenso mea culpa sobre la cuesti贸n. En entrevistas posteriores cuenta que el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (en la cual su Rumania natal era aliada de la Alemania Nazi) lo encontr贸 leyendo muchos textos budistas. Esta influencia oriental se nota en muchos de sus textos. No es de extra帽ar que este libro en particular termine con un llamado al equilibrio que tiene mucho de tao铆sta. 隆No m谩s gobernadores fan谩ticos para Europa, por el amor del Dios en que ya no creemos!...

Ahora, chasqueado de esas extravagancias, de todo lo que daba realce a mis d铆as, me pongo a so帽ar con una ciudad, maravilla de moderaci贸n, dirigida por un equipo de octogenarios un tanto chochos, de una amenidad maquinal, lo suficientemente l煤cidos como para hacer buen uso de sus decrepitudes, exentos de deseos, de a帽oranzas, de dudas, y tan preocupados por el equilibrio general y el bien p煤blico que mirasen la sonrisa como un signo de depravaci贸n o de subversi贸n.


PD. Hay un punto en particular que me llam贸 la atenci贸n. Cioran defiende abiertamente a la Uni贸n Sovi茅tica, est谩 seguro de que se va a extender a otros pa铆ses, y casi al mundo. Afirma, claro, que hay grados y que el comunismo, en un pa铆s 鈥榲iril鈥� (l茅ase, con ganas de dominar a otros) puede resultar vigorizante, pero no tanto en otras naciones peque帽as. Ac谩 est谩 hablando de la situaci贸n de la Uni贸n Sovi茅tica con sus pa铆ses sat茅lites de Europa Oriental, a su Rumania en particular. Yo no pod铆a parar de pensar en China. La pifi贸: no es el comunismo ruso el que sobrevivi贸, sino el chino, que en la 茅poca en que escribi贸 esto, estaba en pleno fervor, a pocos a帽os de la Revoluci贸n Cultural.
PD 2. Si uno pas贸 por y estuvo m谩s o menos de acuerdo con Freud, este es un buen libro para trabajar.

Simly breathtaking.
Written in a brilliant way, yet understandable. With all the heavy ideas about politics and human's obsession with history, this book is certainly worth reading. Genius. As always.

Cioran masterfully manages to draw parallels that seem so obvious once read that I cannot help but feel unreflective and stupid, or like a "troglodyte", Cioran might have put it 鈥� the language he uses (or in any case, the one Howard has translated) is very distinct and precise. He almost apologizes for it in the book's first (and finest) essay: "What consumption of coffee, of cigarettes, and of dictionaries merely to write one halway decent sentence in this inapproachable language, too noble and too distinguished for my taste!" I cannot blame him for illitracy, however foreign the language is to him, when it is I who posess a too meagre vocabulary to be able to effortlessly partake in the essays (see the end of this review).

My inferiority complex aside, what does Cioran offer in this book? Poignant insights, beautiful sentences, somewhat meandering passages, abstruse references, oblique sentences, and some of the the funniest remarks I've ever read. The opening of "Letter to a Faraway Friend" offers a good sample:

"From that country which once was ours and now is no one's, you urge me, after so many years of silence, to send you details about my occupations, and about this 'wonderful' world in which, you say, I am lucky enough to live and move and have my being. I might answer that I am a man without occupation, and that this world is not in the least wonderful. But so laconic a reply cannot, for all its exactitude, assuage your curiosity or satisfy the many questions you raise."

What insights and parallels then, does Cioran offer? Reflections, I would say, on man's role in society, on eschatology, on consciousness, and of course on history and utopia. His lucid writing on the similarities of societies' drive towards utopia and the individual person's longing for salvation, for primordial (non-)existence, for release; and the impossibility of both are particularly moving. His analysis of Prometheus, the Garden of Eden and the original sin, and Dostoevsky's "Dream of a Ridicolous Man" is uncharacteristically straightforward and convincing, without being any less lucid than is expected of him.

Sometimes, however, he meanders a bit, showing no clear intent 鈥� more wallowing in imagery than propelling in thought. "Odyssey of Rancor" is in my opinion especially unclear, and "Russia and the Virus of Liberty" is amost Hegelian at it's core (strangely juxtaposed to a vague Marxist materialism throughout), unfortunately. Nonetheless, there is something to be appreciated in every essay, and "Letter to a Faraway Friend" is a pure delight.
