Mahasweta Devi
184books306followersMahasweta Devi was an Indian social activist and writer. She was born in 1926 in Dhaka, to literary parents in a Hindu Brahmin family. Her father Manish Ghatak was a well-known poet and novelist of the Kallol era, who used the pseudonym Jubanashwa. Mahasweta's mother Dharitri Devi was also a writer and a social worker.
She joined the Rabindranath Tagore-founded Vishvabharati University in Santiniketan and completed a B.A. (Hons) in English, and then finished an M.A. in English at Calcutta University as well. She later married renowned playwright Bijon Bhattacharya who was one of the founding fathers of the IPTA movement. In 1948, she gave birth to Nabarun Bhattacharya, currently one of Bengal's and India's leading novelist whose works are noted for their intellectual vigour and philosophical flavour. She got divorced from Bijon Bhattacharya in 1959.
In 1964, she began teaching at Bijoygarh College (an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta system). During those days, Bijoygarh College was an institution for working class women students. During that period she also worked as a journalist and as a creative writer. Recently, she is more famous for her work related to the study of the Lodhas and Shabars, the tribal communities of West Bengal, women and dalits. She is also an activist who is dedicated to the struggles of tribal people in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In her elaborate Bengali fiction, she often depicts the brutal oppression of tribal peoples and the untouchables by potent, authoritarian upper-caste landlords, lenders, and venal government officials.

ছোট্� অথ� শক্তিশালী একটা বই� ভাষা অন্যরক�, ছো� ছো� বাক্�, কখনো কাব্যি�, কখনো খু� ঋজু।
নকশা� আন্দোলনে নিহত এক সন্তানের জননী সুজাতা� এম� একদিনে মহাশ্বেত� দেবী আমাদের হাজি� করেন, যেদিনট� ছি� ছেলেটি� মৃত্যুবার্ষিকী, দু� বছ� আগ� এম� একদিনে�
মৃত্যু� খব� পা� তিনি, অথ� সে� দিনটিই আজ নির্ধারি� হয়েছে তা� ছো� মেয়ের এনগেজমেন্ট অনুষ্ঠানের�
সন্তান ব্রতী� মৃত্যুটা বাড়িত� অন্য কারো জন্য অতটা শোকে� নয�, বরঞ্� এড়িয়� যাওয়া�, নকশা� আন্দোলনে নিহত কথাট� যে� লজ্জারও। তা� বাড়� থেকে বহ� আগেই সরিয়ে ফেলা হয� ব্রতী� চিহ্�, যে� অম� কে� ছিলই না � বাড়িতে।
কিন্তু সব নিহত বিপ্লবীরই একজন মা থাকে সেটা আমরা মন� রাখি না� কিন্তু অন্য সবাই ভুলে গেলে� মা নিহত নাড়ী ছেড়� ধনকে মন থেকে সরাত� পারে� না� যেমনটা পারে নে� আমাদের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে নিহত রুমি, আজাদদে� মায়েরা।
'সময় চল� যায় নিমর্ম, ঘাতক,নিয়তিসমান সময়� সময় জাহ্নাবী, শো� বেলাভূমি� সময়ের স্রোতে শোকে� উপ� পলিমাট� চাপা পড়ে� তারপ� একদি� সে� পলিমাট� ফুড়� নতুন নতুন অঙ্কুরের আঙুল বেরোয়� আঙুলগুলো আকাশপানে আবার উঠতে চায়� আশার, বেদনার,সুখে�, আনন্দে� অঙ্কুরের আঙুল�'
নকশা� আন্দোলনে� সময় এক� সাথে চলছি� বাংলাদেশ� মুক্তিযুদ্�, কলকাতা� কব� সাহিত্যিকর� সেটা নিয়� বলেছেন শুধু কিন্তু নকশালে� ছেলে গুলোকে যে মারা হচ্ছ� সে ব্যাপারে তারা কথ� বলেন�, � নিয়� ব্রতী� প্রেমিকা নন্দিতার অভিযোগ
-কে� কতকগুল� কব� সে সময়� বাংলাদেশ� বাংলাদেশ কর� মাতামাতি কর�, আর এখ� কেঁদ� কেঁদ� কবিত� লেখে?
� অভিযোগটা� সাথে বর্তমা� সময়ের� আশ্চর্� মি� পা�, নিজে� গা বাঁচাত� আমরা দূরে� বিপ্লবকে নিয়� মাতামাতি কর� অনেকসময়ই।
-এর� এখ� সকলে� মত হত� চায়, শুধু নিজে� মত হত� চায় না� এর নামই ফ্যাশন�
শোকে� মধ্য� কি নিহত স্বজ� বেঁচ� থাকে? সুজাতা� এম� এক আশংক� আমরা পাই। সুজাতা তা� সন্তানের শোকে কাঁদতে� পারে� না, কারো কাছে বলতে পারে� না ওর কথা।
তা� চিন্তা করেন-
একদি� কি আসবে, যেদি� সুজাতা যে কো� জায়গায় যে কো� লোকে� কাছে বস� কাঁদবে�, বলবে� ব্রতী� নাম।
সুজাতা� মন� হয� তা� ওই দু:সহ শোকে� ব্রতী বেঁচ� আছ�, সেটা ভেঙে গে� সত্যিকারের মৃত্যু হব� ব্রতীর।

বইয়ের না� দেখে শুরুতে ভাবছিলাম, � আবার কেমন না�! কিন্তু যখ� নামকরণের কারণটা জানত� পারলাম, তখ� ভেতর� কেমন যে� একটা ধাক্কা খেলা�...

নকশা� আন্দোলনক� কেন্দ্� কর� লেখা আমার পড়া এখনও পর্যন্� শ্রেষ্� উপন্যা� এটি। যদিও উপন্যাসে� কোথা� একবারে� জন্যেও "নকশা�" শব্দটি ব্যবহা� কর� হয়নি। বিভিন্� দৃষ্টিকো� থেকে চিন্তা করলে উপন্যাসটিত� অনেক খুঁত খুঁজ� পাওয়া যাবে� খাপছাড়া কাহিনি, সাদামাঠা গদ্যশৈলী, মোটাদাগে� চরিত্রনির্মাণ। দগদগ� ক্রোধে� ঘোরগ্রস্� বহিঃপ্রকাশ কে� কখনও সাজিয়�-গুছিয়� করতে পারে?
আদর্শজনি� আত্মত্যাগে� কথাই শুধু নয�, উপন্যাসটিত� বর্ণিত হয়েছে একজন মায়ের সঙ্গ� তাঁর ছেলে� সম্পর্কে� আখ্যানও। গোটা উপন্যাসজুড়ে, সকাল দুপু� বিকে� রা�, মা তাঁর সন্তানকে বোঝা� চেষ্টা করছেন। যে সন্তানকে তিনি নিজে� হাতে বড� কর� তুলেছিলে�, সে� সন্তান এখ� তাঁর নিজস্ব চিন্তা-আচরণকে প্রভাবিত করছে� সে� সন্তানের হা� ধর� তিনি সমাজকে চিনত� শিখছেন� মানুষে� মুখোশে� আড়ালে লুকিয়� থাকা মুখক� চিহ্নি� করতে শিখছেন� প্রতিবাদ জানাতে শিখছেন!
উপন্যাসে� শেষদিকের কিছুটা অংশে ব্ল্যা�-হিউমরে� উপাদান রয়েছে� এরকম চাঁচাছোল� ভঙ্গিত� ব্ল্যা�-হিউমরে� প্রয়ো� বাংল� সাহিত্যে সচরাচর চোখে পড়ে না� খু� দ্রু� পড়ে শে� কর� ফেলা যায় ছো� আকারের এই উপন্যাসটা। কিন্তু, মাথা থেকে খু� দ্রু� বেরিয়� যাবা� নয� এই উপন্যাসে� অভিঘাত� একদম� নয়। লেখক তাঁর আবেগকে পাঠকের মনেও সঞ্চারিত করতে সক্ষ� হয়েছেন।

Nah Holo Nah!! I would have appreciated a detailed characterisation of Sujata and her family to better understand the circumstances of their life. The author says a lot about the what's wrong but does not show enough. The bad is not detailed or explored enough in my opinion which makes it difficult to sympathise with Brati/Sujata.
Even the class divide is not explored well enough to understand Brati's choices. It all seemed a little half-baked to me.

A little background before I begin my review:
The decades of 60s and 70s were times of extreme political turmoil in West Bengal. The Naxalbari movement was taking root and it took shape as an armed movement with an extreme leftist ideology, which is commonly known as Maoism. Many college students, influenced by the ideology, which offered a dream of an Utopian society, joined the movement in masses. West Bengal suffered and burned severely and whose aftermath is still seen today.
'Mother of 1084' is set in the backdrop of this very movement. It's the story of a mother, Sujata, whose youngest son, Brati, gets involved in the movement and was brutally killed by the state police force. He lies in a morgue in Kantapukur as corpse no 1084. People influenced by the ideology like Brati, were called as 'cancerous growth on the body of democracy'.
The book portrays a day in the life of Sujata, on the eve on Brati's second death anniversary, mourns her son. Her family is very insensitive towards it and tries to hide his identity or whatever existence Brati had. I was appalled reading about their insensitivities.
Sujata is shocked by their demeanor and decides to mourn Brati all alone. Brati was very dear to her and she always felt like she never understood him. She sets off to visit Brati's friend, Somu and his girlfriend, Nandini. Through them she comes to know of a different Brati, what led him to accepting the ideology and the factors which influenced him. After getting to know this side of him, she openly mourns him in front of her insensitive selfish family. Her husband rebukes her mourning as an appendix pain. Sujata let goes the grief which she had silently accumulated over two years.
While reading about Sujata as a mother mourning her son, I couldn't help but think about the immense loss the ideology and the movement brought upon the entire state. An entire generation of the brightest minds was impaired, which caused grief and loss to their family. The movement caused pain to both, the rebels and the society. I agree our society has flaws, which was one of the reasons of the movement taking shape, the mistrust towards the societal establishment gave an impetus to it, but that doesn't justify the violent path they took and it doesn't mean you target people who aren't from the labour class. Which is why I can never be inclined towards Communism.
This bookis a gut wrenching tale of a mother understanding her deceased son's mindset and beliefs while looking for closure to her grief. If you aren't familiar with the political scenario of West Bengal's Naxalbari movement, I recommend you read about it before reading this book. I also recommend reading 'There's gunpowder in the air' by Manoranjan Byapari after reading this book.

i went into this book fully prepared to feel bored and disdainful (due to the fact that it was assigned reading on a particularly dense reading week) but…………i loved it so much 😭😭😭😭 what an incisive portrait of a mother’s grief in a moment of tremendous political uncertainty. definitely a book i want on my shelves.

❝ফির� আয� ব্রতী, বলতে চান। বলতে পারে� না সুজাতা� স্বপ্ন� ওঁ� পা পাথর হয়ে জম� থাকে, ব্রতী ওঁ� মু� দেখত� থাকে, অপেক্ষ� করতে থাকে, তারপ� যখ� ব্রতী� গলায� পেটে আর বুকে নী� শার্টে� ওপ� তিনট� গো� দা� স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠ�, মুখে� চেহারা পালট� যেতে থাকে মাথা� পেছন থেকে ঘাড় বরাব� ছুরি� দা� ফুটে ওঠ�, তখ� সুজাতা� ঘু� ভেঙে যায়� ঘু� যখনি ভাঙে তখনি সে� মায়� প্রহেলিক� অদ্ভুত বিভ্রম যে� এতক্ষণ ব্রতী ছি� এখনি বেরিয়� গেল।�
পরিবর্তন যেমন� হো� না কে� রাতারাতি আছ� না� তা� যদ� হয� ক্ষমতাসী� অন্যায়ে� বিরুদ্ধে তাহল� তো...! ছো� একটা বই কিন্তু পাঠককে ভাবত� বাধ্� করবে; সমাজ, পরিবার, ন্যায়-অন্যায� � জীবন নিয়ে। নিজে� লক্ষ্য পূরণের জন্য জীবন দেওয়া যায় কিন্তু যে প্রিয়জনদে� পিছন� রেখে যাওয়া হয� তাদে� গল্প কি জানত� ইচ্ছ� কর� না?

একটা নম্ব� কিন্তু সুজাতা� জন্য শুধু� একটা নম্ব� না� কারণ তিনি "হাজা� চুরাশি� মা"� অন্যদে� সু� � ন্যায়ের কথ� ভেবে যে ছেলে জীবন দিয়েছ� আজ তা� প্রিয়জনের� তাকে বেমালু� ভুলে ফুর্তিতে মশগু�! কেমন জানি লজ্জ�, সংকো� তাদে� ব্রতীকে নিয়ে। মিথ্যে মুখোশে� আড়ালে তারা যে সকলে� স্বার্থপর। তাইত� বাসা থেকে তা� সমস্� স্মৃতি মুছে ফেলা হয়েছে কিন্তু সুজাতা তো মা� ভোলা কি এতোই সহ� প্রাণপ্রিয� সন্তানকে? কিন্তু সুজাতাকে সবচেয়� বেশি ভাবায় একটা প্রশ্ন� তিনি ব্রতীকে কতোটুকুই বা জানত� পেরেছিলে�? ব্রতীকে আর� ভালোভাবে জানত� বুকে অতীতে� স্মৃতি আঁকড়ে ধর� এমনই ভুক্তভোগীদে� সাথে দেখাসাক্ষা� করেন�

I am so numb right now.
It's taken me a few hours to process the book and now I really need therapy.
They were all sentenced to death. Anybody was permitted to kill them. People in all the parties, people of all creeds had the unlimited, democratic right to kill these young men who had rejected the parties of the establishment. To kill them one did not need any special sanction from the law or the courts of justice.
Sujata Chatterjee's life is in pieces after her youngest son's death. And her influential family wants to erase his memory from their lives.
What happens when a mother cannot forget her dead son? What happens when the people in the family just don't care?
I am so jealous of those who can read Bangla. The best way to enjoy any translation is to read it in the original language. But, if you cannot, the English translation by Samik Bandopadhyay is the next best thing.
HIGHLY recommend this one.

The 1960s was a decade of extreme political turmoil in West Bengal, India. West Bengal, the state that had started with the highest GDP among all Indian states immediately after independence, was on a downward spiral in terms of almost everything in less than two decades. This period saw an armed movement by a group with extreme leftist ideology (Maoism; still prevalent in many parts of India). Countless school and college students, moved by the ideology and the promise of a Utopian society free of discrimination, joined the movement. Known as the Naxalite movement (after the place Nakshalbari in North Bengal where this movement started), this movement and the successive measures taken by Government to repress it, maimed an entire generation of the brightest, freshest young minds of West Bengal. West Bengal burned severely in the fire started by the Naxalite movements. The state and its residents suffer from the aftermath of the 70's till this day.
"Hajar Churashir Ma (Mother of 1084)" is set in the backdrop of this devastating inferno. It portrays a day in the life of Sujata, an educated, sophisticated middle-aged woman who is a bank employee, wife of a rich businessman and mother of four. This day is the second death anniversary of her youngest son Broti. Despite being born in a "have-it-all" family, Broti identified with the have-nots and wanted to make a better world where everybody were truly equals. Broti took active part in the Naxalite movement. While delivering a message to four friends and co-rebels, Broti, along with those four friends, was killed by an anti-Naxalite mob of citizens. His father, elder brother and sisters were more concerned about hiding the news of Broti's involvement in the movement, than mourning him. This shattered the bereaved mother Sujata's heart. She did all her mourning for Broti in private, away from the eyes of her unfeeling, unsympathetic, selfish family. She could however never understand why her son chose this path. She felt as if she never truly knew her youngest child, whom she adored the most. Through the events on his second death anniversary, and by meeting Broti's friend Somu's mother and Broti's lover Nandini, Sujata gradually came to know and understand Broti's ideology, beliefs and the sources thereof. After two years of mourning, Sujata finally felt closest to her son's spirit. The story ended on a tragic note when Sujata at last let go of the restraints on her grief and openly mourned her son for the first time since his death, and her husband misunderstood her expression of terrible agony as pain caused by a ruptured appendix.
As I mentioned earlier, almost an entire generation was either killed or maimed in the aftermath of the Naxalite movement. Some of the extreme Naxals killed so-called bourgeois (industrialists, landlords, otherwise rich people, police, right-wing politicians - you name it). In response, the state police force and in some cases ordinary citizens killed Naxalites, often brutally. On both sides, many innocent ones like Broti were killed. In police records Broti was the thousand-and-eighty-fourth Naxal killed. A bright student of twenty two, with his eyes full of dreams of a better world and his heart filled with love for humankind, was reduced to a number while his brutally beaten up, bruised body burned away in the crematorium.
"Hajar Churashir Ma" is open in its criticism against the brutality of the Govt. and the police in thwarting the Naxalite movement. It does not however tell the other side of the story, which can mislead a reader unfamiliar of the historical background. It is true that the Naxals were killing people and destroying public property. But that does not give the State the right to kill them without trial and in fake encounters. The law is same for every citizen. Some people are not less equal than others. The flaws in the social and economical system that gave rise to the movement in the first place, were completely valid, and sadly remains to be so till date. However, that does not justify the path of violence, often targeting people just because they were not from the poor labour class. At the same time, some Naxalites being violent killers does not justify the no-trial shoot-at-sight spree of the police. The Naxalite movement primarily gained popularity among students because of the mistrust towards establishment, towards the hypocrisy and lack of integrity of the privileged, the so-called "elite"class of society. Ironically, their downfall came mostly because of their blind trust towards everybody who joined them. Taking advantage of the vulnerability, the Govt. had infiltrated the Naxlas with spies. The tip off from such a spy caused the exposure and killing of Broti and his four friends.
While reading and empathizing with the bereaved mother Sujata, I could not help grieving the immense loss of everyone. Many of the Naxalites who were not killed, lost organs and normal function of body and mind due to brutal torture in police custody. One cannot start to fathom the loss of the friends and families of the deceased ones on both sides. As a whole, the society not only lost some of its brightest mind, but the method applied by the govt. to stop the rebellion probably instilled enough fear in the upcoming generations not to question authority and think of anything beyond their agenda of personal gain. I am not preaching. I am a member of the subsequent selfish - or rather - indifferent generation. We have stopped caring. Can there be anything more sad than that? The movement and it's repression ended in a lose-lose situation for both the rebels and the society.
The author Mahashweta Devi was once an ever-present voice to plead the case of the subaltern, the underprivileged. At one place in the book she criticizes the intellectuals of that time, for being neutral at the moment of crisis: "Jara merudondohin, subidhabadi - hawa badal bujhe mat badlano shilpi sahityik buddhijibi.." Before reading the book one must be familiar with the political history of West Bengal during the 1960s and 70s, because the book tells only one side of the story (the other side being out of the scope of this book).
"Hajar Churashir Ma (Mother of 1084)" is set in the backdrop of this devastating inferno. It portrays a day in the life of Sujata, an educated, sophisticated middle-aged woman who is a bank employee, wife of a rich businessman and mother of four. This day is the second death anniversary of her youngest son Broti. Despite being born in a "have-it-all" family, Broti identified with the have-nots and wanted to make a better world where everybody were truly equals. Broti took active part in the Naxalite movement. While delivering a message to four friends and co-rebels, Broti, along with those four friends, was killed by an anti-Naxalite mob of citizens. His father, elder brother and sisters were more concerned about hiding the news of Broti's involvement in the movement, than mourning him. This shattered the bereaved mother Sujata's heart. She did all her mourning for Broti in private, away from the eyes of her unfeeling, unsympathetic, selfish family. She could however never understand why her son chose this path. She felt as if she never truly knew her youngest child, whom she adored the most. Through the events on his second death anniversary, and by meeting Broti's friend Somu's mother and Broti's lover Nandini, Sujata gradually came to know and understand Broti's ideology, beliefs and the sources thereof. After two years of mourning, Sujata finally felt closest to her son's spirit. The story ended on a tragic note when Sujata at last let go of the restraints on her grief and openly mourned her son for the first time since his death, and her husband misunderstood her expression of terrible agony as pain caused by a ruptured appendix.
As I mentioned earlier, almost an entire generation was either killed or maimed in the aftermath of the Naxalite movement. Some of the extreme Naxals killed so-called bourgeois (industrialists, landlords, otherwise rich people, police, right-wing politicians - you name it). In response, the state police force and in some cases ordinary citizens killed Naxalites, often brutally. On both sides, many innocent ones like Broti were killed. In police records Broti was the thousand-and-eighty-fourth Naxal killed. A bright student of twenty two, with his eyes full of dreams of a better world and his heart filled with love for humankind, was reduced to a number while his brutally beaten up, bruised body burned away in the crematorium.
"Hajar Churashir Ma" is open in its criticism against the brutality of the Govt. and the police in thwarting the Naxalite movement. It does not however tell the other side of the story, which can mislead a reader unfamiliar of the historical background. It is true that the Naxals were killing people and destroying public property. But that does not give the State the right to kill them without trial and in fake encounters. The law is same for every citizen. Some people are not less equal than others. The flaws in the social and economical system that gave rise to the movement in the first place, were completely valid, and sadly remains to be so till date. However, that does not justify the path of violence, often targeting people just because they were not from the poor labour class. At the same time, some Naxalites being violent killers does not justify the no-trial shoot-at-sight spree of the police. The Naxalite movement primarily gained popularity among students because of the mistrust towards establishment, towards the hypocrisy and lack of integrity of the privileged, the so-called "elite"class of society. Ironically, their downfall came mostly because of their blind trust towards everybody who joined them. Taking advantage of the vulnerability, the Govt. had infiltrated the Naxlas with spies. The tip off from such a spy caused the exposure and killing of Broti and his four friends.
While reading and empathizing with the bereaved mother Sujata, I could not help grieving the immense loss of everyone. Many of the Naxalites who were not killed, lost organs and normal function of body and mind due to brutal torture in police custody. One cannot start to fathom the loss of the friends and families of the deceased ones on both sides. As a whole, the society not only lost some of its brightest mind, but the method applied by the govt. to stop the rebellion probably instilled enough fear in the upcoming generations not to question authority and think of anything beyond their agenda of personal gain. I am not preaching. I am a member of the subsequent selfish - or rather - indifferent generation. We have stopped caring. Can there be anything more sad than that? The movement and it's repression ended in a lose-lose situation for both the rebels and the society.
The author Mahashweta Devi was once an ever-present voice to plead the case of the subaltern, the underprivileged. At one place in the book she criticizes the intellectuals of that time, for being neutral at the moment of crisis: "Jara merudondohin, subidhabadi - hawa badal bujhe mat badlano shilpi sahityik buddhijibi.." Plot revolved around the Naxalism's evolution from Naxalbari area of West Bengal from 60s. Impetus to this, here is a story of a mother (Sujata) who was shattered from the killing of her beloved son, Vrati. In the process of finding the facts for why this all happened to only her, she found n number of facts beyond her own understanding.
Dipped in gloom, life of a woman who loses her son to the violence, which was the result of his adopted ideology of naxalism & to later know that you did not knew your children, is the biggest disappointment for any parents. It was same with Sujata who found that Vrati was much different to what she knew about him.
Sujata was married to Divyanath and had four children. Vrati was the youngest of all her children. Practically, she was controlled in her life, in her family, earlier by her mother-in-law and later ideologically by her disobedient daughter 'Tuli'. She always seek for a better way to live her dreams. Suddenly one day, they was informed that their youngest son was killed in a militant encounter operation. When she visited morgue to identify her son, she was called upon as the mother of corpse no. 1084 (this is why the book got its title). She was very much aghast to the indifferent behaviour of her husband on knowing this. Instead of visiting with her to find the body of Vrati, he rushed to hide the news that might named his son in newspaper & him as corpse's father.
To know the reason behind this killing, she started visiting the brethren of Vrati from that killing operation, there she had found that there is so much to learn of her son's life.
She met Vrati's friend Samu's family. Samu's family was below poverty line. His mother and sister didn't even had better clothes to wear to cover their body properly. There by meeting them she realised she was unaware to very much extent of Vrati's another life, that he lived, with his friends too. She was becoming attached with every fact in depth. Learning that he even had a real girlfriend, that he once told her about, Nandini, she met her too. Nandini told Sujata for how Vrati was betrayed by his own group member and friend. He was not even the target but lost his life in the act of saving others.
In that realm, she found that only person who loved her over time, was her son Vrati. Neither her husband nor her other children or family members. She even realized that only person except her who loved Vrati, was Hema. It was too hard for her to digest that her little boy who had won scholarship and was good in studies, how he fell under such a path of life ruining ideology? Divyanath always taunt him as manly-girl. Tuli was Disobedient, Nipa was selfish, Jyoti was careless and Divyanath was Characterless womanizer. Her whole life was just an adjustment. Only escape from this bad reality was one another beautiful reality, that was her son Vrati and to some little extent her job of an officer in a Bank.
Her boggle findings of her son's life doings & in this act of finding & realizing her invaluable existence in her own family, this gut-wrenching story flown through.

इस हत्य� के पीछे का कारण जानन� के लि� वह उस हत्याकां� से व्रती के करीबी सहयोगियो� के पा� जाने लगी, तब उस� पत� चल� कि उसके बेटे के जीवन के बारे मे� जानन� के लि� बहुत कु� बाकी है�
वह व्रती के दोस्� सामू के परिवार से मिलीं। सामू का परिवार गरीबी रेखा से नीचे था� उसकी मा� और बह� के पा� तन ढकने के लि�, पहनन� के लि�, अच्छ� कपड़� तक नही� थे� वहाँ उनसे मिलक� उसने महसू� किया कि वह व्रती के दूसर� जीवन से बहुत हद तक अनजा� थी कि वह अपने दोस्तो� के सा� भी रहता था� वह हर तथ्य से गहरा� से जुड़ गयी थी� यह जानक� कि उसकी एक वास्तविक प्रेमिका भी थी, कि उसने एक बा� उस� नंदिनी के बारे मे� बताय� था, वह उससे भी मिली थी� नंदिनी ने सुजाता को बताय� कि कैसे व्रती को उसके ही समूह के सदस्� और मित्� ने धोखा दिया� वह लक्ष्य भी नही� था लेकि� दूसरों को बचान� के चक्क� मे� उसकी जा� ले ली गयी�

सुजाता का विवा� दिव्यनाथ से हु� था और उनके चा� बच्च� थे� व्रती सभी बच्चों मे� सबसे छोटा था � व्यावहारिक रू� से, वह अपने जीवन मे� अपने परिवार मे�, पहले अपनी सा� द्वारा और बा� मे� वैचारि� रू� से अपनी अवज्ञाकारी बेटी 'तुली' द्वारा नियंत्रि� थी� वह हमेश� अपने सपनो� को जीने के बेहत� तरीके की तलाश मे� रहती है� अचान� एक दि� उन्हें सूचन� मिली कि उनका सबसे छोटा बेटा एक उग्रवादी मुठभेड� मे� मारा गय� है� जब वह अपने बेटे की पहचा� करने के लि� मुर्दाघर गई, उस� ला� नं 1084 की मा� के रू� मे� बुलाया गय� था (यही कारण है कि पुस्तक को इसका शीर्षक मिला)� इस जानकारी पर अपने पत� के उदासी� व्यवहा� से वह बहुत आह� हुई। व्रती के शव को खोजन� के लि� उसके सा� जाने के बजाय, वह उस खब� को छिपाने के लि� दौड़�, जिसमें अखबा� मे� उसके बेटे का ना� और उस� शव का पिता बताय� जा सकता था �
इस हत्य� के पीछे का कारण जानन� के लि� वह उस हत्याकां� से व्रती के करीबी सहयोगियो� के पा� जाने लगी, तब उस� पत� चल� कि उसके बेटे के जीवन के बारे मे� जानन� के लि� बहुत कु� बाकी है�
वह व्रती के दोस्� सामू के परिवार से मिलीं। सामू का परिवार गरीबी रेखा से नीचे था� उसकी मा� और बह� के पा� तन ढकने के लि�, पहनन� के लि�, अच्छ� कपड़� तक नही� थे� वहाँ उनसे मिलक� उसने महसू� किया कि वह व्रती के दूसर� जीवन से बहुत हद तक अनजा� थी कि वह अपने दोस्तो� के सा� भी रहता था� वह हर तथ्य से गहरा� से जुड़ गयी थी� यह जानक� कि उसकी एक वास्तविक प्रेमिका भी थी, कि उसने एक बा� उस� नंदिनी के बारे मे� बताय� था, वह उससे भी मिली थी� नंदिनी ने सुजाता को बताय� कि कैसे व्रती को उसके ही समूह के सदस्� और मित्� ने धोखा दिया� वह लक्ष्य भी नही� था लेकि� दूसरों को बचान� के चक्क� मे� उसकी जा� ले ली गयी�
उस दायर� मे�, उसने पाया कि एकमात्� व्यक्त� जो उस� सम� के सा� प्या� करता था, वह उसका पुत्� व्रती था� � तो उसका पत� और � ही उसके अन्य बच्च� या परिवार के सदस्य। उसने यह भी महसू� किया कि उनके अलाव� केवल हेमा ही वह व्यक्त� थी जो व्रती से प्या� करती थी� उसके लि� यह पच� पाना बहुत कठिन था कि उसका छोटा लड़क� जो छात्रवृत्त� प्राप्� कर चुका था और पढ़ा� मे� अच्छ� था, वह जीवन को बर्बाद करने वाली विचारधार� के रास्ते पर कैसे � गय�? दिव्यनाथ हमेश� उस� मर्दान� लड़की के रू� मे� ताना मारत� था� तुली अवज्ञाकारी थी, निपा स्वार्थी थी, ज्योति लापरवा� था और दिव्यनाथ चरित्रही� महिलावादी था� सुजाता का पूरा जीवन बस एक समायोज� था� इस बुरी वास्तविकता से बचना ही एक और सुंद� वास्तविकता थी, वह था उनका पुत्� व्रती और कु� हद तक बैंक मे� एक अधिकारी की नौकरी�

নাকশাল আন্দোলনে নিহত হবার পর ব্রতী� শে� পরিচয় হয� একটা নাম্বা�, লা� নং- ১০৮৪� ব্রতী� বাবা, ব্রতী� বোনেরা স্মার্� লোকজন। জগৎসংসার ব্রতীকে সেদিনই হাজা� চুরাশি নং পরিচয় দিয়� যত তাড়াতাড়ি সম্ভ� হা� ঝেড়� নেবা� সুযো� দিয়েছে। তারা সেটা লুফে নিয়েছেন যশ রক্ষার্থে। না� রক্ষার্থ� কতশত অনার কিলি� হচ্ছ�, যে মৃ�, তা� জন্য � আর বিশে� কি?

� প্রসঙ্গে বলতে গিয়� একটা কথ� মন� পড়ে- 'তব� মহাকাল ভোলে, জননী ভোলেনা'� ব্রতী� মৃত্যু� নিদারু� শোকে ক্ষতবিক্ষত হয়ে� সুজাতা কাওক� বলতে পারে� না কষ্টের কি অম্লস্বা� তিনি ভো� কর� চলেছেন এক� একা। কাওক� ছুঁত� দিতে পারে� না বুকে� মাঝে চাপা, অভিমানী সন্তানের অস্তিত্বের ছাইভষ্ম। কব� আবুল হাসা� সমাজের কাছে অসহায় হয়ে বলেছিলেন, 'আম� কা� কাছে যাবো? কোনদিক� যাবো?'

The Naxalbari movement erupted in 1967 West Bengal, led by farmersand students/youth against the landowners. The crackdown on it was horrifically violent.
Happening over a single day, in Mother of 1084 by Mahasweta Devi (translated by Samik Bandyopadhyay), Sujata recalls the same day two years back when she received the news that her youngest son, Brati, has been brutally killed along with his comrades during the police crackdown on the revolt. Her family's reaction to the death is a swift erasure of Brati's name so that their elite family name remains unmarred. In the present day, Sujata is yet to process her son's death or her family's lack of love and empathy in the name of respectability. It makes her ask who the monsters really are - Brati and his friends; or her educated, rich, upper caste family.
Like Sujata, this book made me think of what is defined as 'decency' by the middle class. Suffocating your daughters and sons with gender roles and mandatory heterosexuality from the moment they exist. Raising your sons to have uncontrolled access to women's bodies, raising them to be the epitome of violentmasculinity. Hiding child ab*se by the respected elders of the family. The sacred right to marital abuse. In the name of religiosity, celebrating the destruction of minority homes, churches,mosques; and the lynching of religious minorities and the 'lower' caste. Feminism for oneself and one's five friends, okay for other women to perish. Loving inter-religion and inter-caste marriages are a sin. All in the name of God. Billionaires are also God. A ten day circus of billionaire clowns for a wedding is okay even if itmisuses public infrastructure. God forbid though if a street in Delhi is blocked due to a protest. When it gets too real though, the middle class have their homes and cafes and workplaces and malls to retreat to.
It made me think of violence the upper caste consider acceptable and even godly so that they don't have to face the death of casteism, classism and religious discrimination. Sujata's conscience then is not just hers, it's also the readers'. I said this before - this book emotionally annihilatedme. The rage, despair and hopelessness that I often feel looking at national news every single day is the same I felt permeating through this story. Because the story of Mother of 1084 is not just about a mother's grief, it's also about the collective grief for a dead nation.

My first book by this important Bengali writer and social activist—it is the one I long wanted to read and probably an excellent place to start. Set in Calcutta in the late 1960s, it focuses on the impact of the murder of a young man during the early years of the Naxalite Uprising has on his mother. Devi's style is tight and pointed, pulling the social dynamics of the time into sharp focus. Very, very good.

Devi, said to be as much of an inspirational activist as a writer, did bring to the surface various social issues that we tend to ignore. The plot is interesting, and the characters, complex. Sujatha's discovery of herself as she relives her son's death is intense as it is relate-able. Though i felt the an iota of Sujatha's "awakening" in my self as i read the book, the author's condescension towards the reader was clear. As I result, though I understood Devi's characters and found them understandable, I disliked the idea of the author, and was irritated every time that snobbishness came through. Mahasweta Devi must have had disregard for all those who lacked the political and social fervor that she possesses-- this is clear in her potrayal of all those on the "outside". Brathi, Somu's mother, Nandini and Sujatha, are on the inside- they have experienced some sort of empathy for the cause. However, what Devi needs to realise is that not everyone can feel the same passion for the same cause as her. Thus, she has no right to judge her readers, and those around her. While i do believe in equality and justice, I do not think forcing ideas on others is correct. Mother of 1084 deals with the importance of awakening one's conscience, yet the intrusion of the author's condescending voice almost deters the reader.

This book clutches at your heart and does not leave until the very end. It opens your eyes to both the discrimination and complancency within the society (specifically, Calcutta, and perhaps urban Indian in general) and the mental state of a mother suffering her son's loss and coming to terms with these and other realities.
I don't normally cry while reading books or watching movies, but this book brought me very, very close to it.
