it was amazing

My first book by this important Bengali writer and social activist—it is the one I long wanted to read and probably an excellent place to start. Set in Calcutta in the late 1960s, it focuses on the impact of the murder of a young man during the early years of the Naxalite Uprising has on his mother. Devi's style is tight and pointed, pulling the social dynamics of the time into sharp focus. Very, very good.

Tonymess Interesting Joseph, I really struggled with this a few years ago so might have to give it another try, I thought the translation was clunky, or maybe it’s the original text as I don’t have a clue about Bengali.

Joseph Schreiber I had that experience with another of her books, but it may have been not the right time. She has had many translators, but in this case she actually began translating a good part of it and allowed the translator to do what he wanted with it—and he had access to her input. It is a very constrained kind of narrative that is not sentimental, sometimes harsh, sometimes backhanded and sarcastic, and one that makes the most of the encounters the main character has during this one day.
