His biting satire, comic realism, and descriptions of Russian provincials and petty bureaucrats influenced later Russian masters Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and especially Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Gogol wittily said many later Russian maxims.

This book is a classic example of the great gorge between the western and eastern mentality. Most people from western countries have read this book for the sole purpose of elevating themselves "culturally" because it's considered one among'st many of Russia's classic works. So, when I see a review stating that they don't get it, or, the characters are barbaric, anti-Semitic etc, I say "of course you don't get it, you've missed the point, you don't understand the context or historical significance. How could you?". The book was written for the Russian audience to stir a sense of brotherhood and romanticism due to the suffering of past generations. The characters portray antisemitism because this occurred hundreds of years before 'The Holocaust' and it wasn't politically incorrect to have such views back then. The human mind under those conditions didn't think about how the "enlightened" of the world would comment on his thought process. Did this book have any influence on the tragic events that would follow? I highly doubt it. Would a book be considered less sociably acceptable today if it contained a bunch of rednecks being racist to the African-american community in a historical setting? Xenophobia and racism exist to this very day let alone centuries ago.
Taras Bulba is a story of a people known for their warrior tradition and the injustices they thought had been done onto them. Anyone reading more into it than that was reading with walls already built in his or her mind. The very opposite of what "enlightened" readers should be doing.

Es tanta mi admiraci贸n por Nik贸lai G贸gol, que se me est谩n terminando los adjetivos calificativos. Padre de las letras rusas junto a Alexandr Pushkin supo colocar a Rusia en un lugar privilegiado dentro de las letras universales cuando nadie miraba hacia esas fr铆as tierras eslavas.
Si bien naci贸 y tuvo su comienzo literario en la 鈥減eque帽a Rusia鈥�, como se denominaba a Ucrania, fue en San Petersburgo donde afianz贸 su prestigio literario, en la segunda parte de su vida hasta su muerte.

Su gran ductilidad a la hora de escribir historias logr贸 que se instaurara la verdadera literatura moderna en Rusia y su modelo fue tomado por los grandes escritores que llegaron despu茅s como Fi贸dor Dostoievski (su famosa frase 鈥淭odos descendemos de 鈥楨l Capote鈥� de G贸gol鈥� es tan determinante como justa), Lev Tolst贸i, Iv谩n Turgu茅niev y Ant贸n Chejov, s贸lo por nombrar algunos.
Sus obras se sucedieron r谩pidamente y todas fueron exitosas y perennes, y siguen vigentes a煤n hoy y lo ser谩n por siempre, desde su obra cumbre, 鈥淎lmas muertas鈥� considerado 鈥淓l Quijote ruso鈥� pasando por el cuento pre-kafkiano 鈥淓l Capote鈥�, sus incursiones en el g茅nero de lo absurdo y la parodia como lo fueron sus cuentos "La nariz", "Diario de un loco" o "Por qu茅 se pelearon los dos Ivanes" y su obra de teatro "El inspector", pero tambi茅n supo escribir cuentos fant谩sticos como "Nochebuena" o con efectos de terror, cuyo ejemplo m谩s emblem谩ticos es el aterrorizante "Viy". Todo esto hizo que su imagen se inmortalizara tanto en Rusia como en el mundo y nos permiti贸 a煤n hoy seguir disfrutando de tantos relatos.
Pero dentro de la novela, tambi茅n escribi贸 esta historia tan fuerte que se llam贸 "Tar谩s Bulba". M谩s all谩 de que los especialistas no se definen si "Tar谩s Bulba" es una novela hist贸rica, una epopeya heroica o un poema 茅pico creo que es un conjunto de todo eso.
Es sorprendente como G贸gol, sin tener un conocimiento profundo de la coyuntura hist贸rica sino bas谩ndose en leyendas o canciones folkl贸ricas rusas pertrecha una historia tan atrapante como esta.
Por otro lado, cabe destacar que "Tar谩s Bulba" es un libro que posee altas dosis de violencia, crueldad y salvajismo y creo que estos son los tres elementos que prevalecen a lo largo de la narraci贸n, con la excepci贸n de la escapada de Andr铆, unos de sus hijos con una doncella t谩rtara.
Si bien es la segunda vez que leo el libro, sigo percibiendo que m谩s me ha llamado la atenci贸n es el alto nivel de violencia y cuando G贸gol narra los enfrentamientos entre Tar谩s y los distintos 补迟补尘谩苍, o l铆deres de los ej茅rcitos de cosacos, que a su vez se divid铆an, seg煤n la regi贸n en distintos 办耻谤颈茅苍 durante las distintas batallas contra las tropas de los polacos.
Ambas facciones se odian a muerte y esa misma muerte se la desean con un odio visceral que llevan a la pr谩ctica cuando se enfrentan. Un dato no menor para observar es que cuando G贸gol describe las batallas, me lleva a pensar que es imposible que, aunque en alg煤n pasaje nombra a Horacio, no haya le铆do "La Il铆ada" de Homero o "La Eneida de Virgilio, ya que las descripciones de c贸mo se suceden las luchas son muy similares, incluso cuando detalla los nombres de los distintos guerreros o cuando estos mueren.
Esa forma de definir la muerte del soldado cuando dice "y la severa alma del cosaco se elev贸 a las alturas" o "una vez muerto, su alma se desprendi贸 de su cuerpo" es una relaci贸n directa con las batallas del p茅lida Aquiles contra las huestes de H茅ctor.
G贸gol sabe como mostrarnos el modo de vida, los ideales y la bravura del pueblo cosaco a la perfecci贸n, tanto en Tar谩s como en sus valientes hijos Andr铆 como en Ostap, quienes tendr谩n un rol fundamental en la historia, especialmente "Andr铆".
La fe del cosaco es tal cual lo afirma el autor cuando dice que "es implacable y temible como una roca moldeada por la naturaleza en medio de un mar tormentoso y eternamente cambiante".
El cosaco es valeroso, genuino, fiel, nunca abandona a su camarada, no entiende de necedades ni necesita descanso, se entrega en cuerpo y alma a la batalla, dedica su vida defender sus convicciones y asegurar la paz para su tierra a partir del combate y la guerra.
Todo esto es detallado con aplomo por G贸gol. Ese duro cosaco viejo que es Tar谩s no cejar谩 hasta el final ni traicionar谩 a sus soldados ni a su amada patria y lo mismo sucede con sus camaradas, los atamanes.
M谩s all谩 de que en algunas partes se leen descripciones cargadas de misoginia y discriminaci贸n, especialmente con los jud铆os, caracterizados como una raza detestable e inmunda, o como en algunos pasajes cuando los cosacos hablan de las mujeres, los t谩rtaros y de sus odiados enemigos polacos, debe entenderse que estas apreciaciones eran comunes en esa 茅poca tan lejana y han quedado atr谩s.
"Tar谩s Bulba" es una novela con una acci贸n intensa, sin freno pero a la vez tan bien narrada (otro autor no podr铆a haberlo hecho mejor), con personajes emblem谩ticos, que resumen una 茅poca salvaje en la que los hombres disputaban sin tregua su honor en el campo de batalla y es muy adictiva. Capta con efectividad la esencia de esos valientes cosacos que alguna vez cabalgaron las estepas rusas y de esta manera Nik贸lai G贸gol nos propone una historia tan entretenida como brillante.
No es para menos, es una novela de Nik贸lai G贸gol.

Todo esto es detallado con aplomo por G贸gol. Ese duro cosaco viejo que es Tar谩s no cejar谩 hasta el final ni traicionar谩 a sus soldados ni a su amada patria y lo mismo sucede con sus camaradas, los atamanes.
M谩s all谩 de que en algunas partes se leen descripciones cargadas de misoginia y discriminaci贸n, especialmente con los jud铆os, caracterizados como una raza detestable e inmunda, o como en algunos pasajes cuando los cosacos hablan de las mujeres, los t谩rtaros y de sus odiados enemigos polacos, debe entenderse que estas apreciaciones eran comunes en esa 茅poca tan lejana y han quedado atr谩s.
"Tar谩s Bulba" es una novela con una acci贸n intensa, sin freno pero a la vez tan bien narrada (otro autor no podr铆a haberlo hecho mejor), con personajes emblem谩ticos, que resumen una 茅poca salvaje en la que los hombres disputaban sin tregua su honor en el campo de batalla y es muy adictiva. Capta con efectividad la esencia de esos valientes cosacos que alguna vez cabalgaron las estepas rusas y de esta manera Nik贸lai G贸gol nos propone una historia tan entretenida como brillante.
No es para menos, es una novela de Nik贸lai G贸gol.
Leyendo a genios como esto es imposible aburrirse.

I probably would have given it 4 stars instead of 3 if someone hadn't "accidentally" spoiled everything to me.
Okay so this book is an overflow of patriotism and I get it considering when it was written. So yeah it wasn't my cup of tea but it was by Gogol so I had to read it.
It was a tragic story and the contrast between the characters was so excellently put.. One son was sentimental and kind of romantic, unlike the other son. And Taras was the most patriotic character I have ever come across.
Overall, it didn't excite me as much as other works of Gogol I've read and that makes me want to read Dead Souls even more...

鈥淭he Wild Fields鈥� was their name, the broad plains that stretched beyond the turbulent waters of the Dneiper River, those Central Ukrainian steppes that the Zaporozhian Cossacks once called home. Now, however, if you go looking for those plains, you will find nothing but water, water trapped by the dams of the Kahkhova Reservoir.
But in the 17th century, 鈥淭he Wild Fields鈥� were flowing with Cosssacks, running as dangerous and free as the rapids of the Dneiper. Originally a people of the steppes, related to the Khazars, the Cossacks developed into a voluntary tribe鈥攁ccepting into their ranks runaway serfs, escaped criminals, war refugees, even a Tartar or two鈥攂ound together by a bellicose nature, steadfast loyalty, and a fierce pride in their status as warriors and in the truth of their Greek Orthodox faith. They battled against (and occasionally for) the Catholic kings of Poland, the tsars of Russia, and the khans of Crimea, showing themselves to be formidable enemies, dangerous allies.
The protagonist of Taras Bulba is one of these Zaporozhian Cossacks, and the novella tells the tale of a great campaign that the Cossacks once fought against the Poles. When Taras Bulba and his two young sons ride out to do battle, one son will become a hero and the other a traitor; how Taras Bulba faces the fates of his sons becomes central to this narrative of war.
When Gogol was in his twenties, he developed a passion for Ukrainian history, and hoped to earn a position teaching the subject at the University of Kiev. He was rejected for the position as unqualified (despite the support of his friend Pushkin) but the research he did to prepare himself for the post led to the writing of Taras Bulba (1835), Gogol longest effort up to that time. It is a work of unabashed romance, unapologetic nationalism, a celebration of the strengths both of Russia and the Ukraine.
Although Gogol is clearly influenced by the novels of Sir Walter Scott, he seemed to sense that his Cossacks, both in their savagery and generosity, were more primitive鈥攁nd more monumental鈥攖han the medieval knights and Highland chieftains that the Scotch novelist took for his subjects. So Gogol sought a more elemental literary model, and found it in the Iliad of Homer.
I鈥檒l end with with one epic digression, one battle encounter, and one epic simile. We begin with the digression, an anecdote of the early life of the Cossack Mosiy Schilo:
He was a muscular Cossack, who had often commanded at sea, and undergone many vicissitudes. The Turks had once seized him and his men at Trebizond, and borne them captives to the galleys, where they bound them hand and foot with iron chains, gave them no food for a week at a time, and made them drink sea-water. The poor prisoners endured and suffered all, but would not renounce their orthodox faith. Their hetman, Mosiy Schilo, could not bear it: he trampled the Holy Scriptures under foot, wound the vile turban about his sinful head, and became the favourite of a pasha, steward of a ship, and ruler over all the galley slaves. The poor slaves sorrowed greatly thereat, for they knew that if he had renounced his faith he would be a tyrant, and his hand would be the more heavy and severe upon them. So it turned out. Mosiy Schilo had them put in new chains, three to an oar. The cruel fetters cut to the very bone; and he beat them upon the back. But when the Turks, rejoicing at having obtained such a servant, began to carouse, and, forgetful of their law, got all drunk, he distributed all the sixty-four keys among the prisoners, in order that they might free themselves, fling their chains and manacles into the sea, and, seizing their swords, in turn kill the Turks. Then the Cossacks collected great booty, and returned with glory to their country; and the guitar-players celebrated Mosiy Schilo鈥檚 exploits for a long time.Here is a battle encounter containing an epic simile:

Greed led to no good: the head rolled off, and the body fell headless, sprinkling the earth with blood far and wide; whilst the Cossack soul ascended, indignant and surprised at having so soon quitted so stout a frame.
The cornet had not succeeded in seizing the hetman鈥檚 head by its scalp-lock, and fastening it to his saddle, before an avenger had arrived. As a hawk floating in the sky, sweeping in great circles with his mighty wings, suddenly remains poised in air, in one spot, and thence darts down like an arrow upon the shrieking quail, so Taras鈥檚 son Ostap darted suddenly upon the cornet and flung a rope about his neck with one cast. The cornet鈥檚 red face became a still deeper purple as the cruel noose compressed his throat, and he tried to use his pistol; but his convulsively quivering hand could not aim straight, and the bullet flew wild across the plain. Ostap immediately unfastened a silken cord which the cornet carried at his saddle bow to bind prisoners, and having with it bound him hand and foot, attached the cord to his saddle and dragged him across the field . . .

Gogol is primarily known as the father of Russian realism and for his grotesquely evocative descriptions, but 'Taras Bulba' represents a completely different mode for the author. Taking inspiration from the Greek epics and the nationalistic poems of French knights, Gogol creates his own story of national identity.
Though elements of realism and satire creep into the book, its tone is largely that of an action film: exciting, gritty, and passionate. Like almost any such national work, this fervor often overwhelms the story, romanticizing the Cossack life and ridiculing its enemies.
This one-sided hyperbole is most infamously represented by Gogol's Jews, who aren't painted in a particularly flattering light. The antisemitism isn't any worse than Shylock or The Jew of Malta, but Gogol's evocative characterization did inspire racist depictions by later authors; though anyone would seem like a schlub when compared to the epically handsome and strong-willed Cossacks.
Most of the work is simple and unadorned, sometimes to the point of repetition and inelegance. There are some stylized descriptions here and there, and these stand out as some of the most lovely and thoughtful passages. The philosophy tends to be as simple as the prose, though again, there are some subtler shades here and there.
The plot itself is straightforward, but not oversimplified. It resembles in many ways the stories of love, war, and honor that Shakespeare adapted for his plays.
As an adventurous romance, the story is amusing, fast-paced, and uncomplicated. There are promising hints of Gogol's strengths as a characterist and satirist, but the unsophisticated nationalism leaves much to be desired; even if such romantic sentiments never really die.
There are still those to whom warlike manliness and jingoistic pride in both country and faith are worthy ideals. Violent propaganda rarely goes out of style, and the manly warmongers still pull out Taras Bulba now and again as a reliably uncomplicated vision of righteous war.
But war and politics are the subjects of art, not its masters; simple patriotism cannot elevate this work to the level of Gogol's more thoughtful and layered works. Like 'The Song of Roland', such short-sighted epics may be of historical interest, but not social or literary interest.

Well? I am, or better said I was, distressed to find how far I, that is myself, had been led along the dusty, beaten track of this savage tale. Historically blended, though with not enough yoghurt, water and salt , I had felt constantly wanted to turn it aside, yet I hadn鈥檛 done it, instead I had plunged beneath the surface and, o lord, what had I discovered. Horrific events!
Taras Bulba, the chief male character and leading the narrative flow in all senses, seems to have been on the look out of those opportunities that we hear about and read about in exceptional novels and biographies! He is always on the watch to take advantage of any opening that may present itself 鈥� for experiences and sensations, in a word adventures 鈥� but only if it鈥檚 about war-related!
The story has reminded me of two wonderful works that I have greatly enjoyed, one is Hadji Murat by Leo Tolstoy, and the other is The Captain's Daughter: And A History of Pugachov by Alexander Pushkin. Of course, I am not interested in comparing, contrasting, seizing the strong points, the weak points, the point of view of each 馃槉 The value of each is undisputable on its own. Still, I haven鈥檛 enjoyed Gogol鈥檚 work as much as the other two 鈽� Just because of Taras Bulba! Awful character. The greatest apostle of war! Too free, too frank, too cruel! Everything is superficial to him except fighting in battles.

It is fascinating to observe the response of Western readers to Gogol's epic Taras Bulba. Therefore, I would like to emphasize the importance of cultural and historical perspectives when analyzing this particular work. First, if you want to see what Gogol's Cossacks really looked like (the Hollywood version is bs)

Being of both Russian and Ukrainian heritage, and having read the work in its original, I feel that some American readers wrongly dismiss it as an absurd, extremist tale about a bunch of barbarians. It is easy to imagine an American reader's shock due to the frequent anti-semitism and cold-blooded violence, but you have to keep in mind HISTORICAL CONTEXT and PERSPECTIVE.
Gogol by profession was a historian who was fascinated by his Ukrainian heritage. He had written Taras Bulba based on his historical studies. His work portrays the realities of life on the south Russian (Ukrainian) steppes and the intricate, antagonistic relationships between Cossacks, Tartars, Poles, and the Jews. The actions and behavior of the Cossacks are inherent to the harsh realities of that historical period. The Cossacks do not simply decide to ravage the Poles for fun (although that was part of it) - they retaliate to their transgression on their religion, their land, their way of life.
There is never any question of Cossack identity, and what they represent. At the beginning Gogol poetically describes the Cossacks as a unique manifestation of Russian nature and strength forged by the cruel,rugged conditions of the 16th century. Towards the end, Gogol through Taras speaks of the Russian brotherhood (russkoye tovarischestvo) that is unlike any other. Thus the work is also hugely relevant to contemporary times, when Ukraine has been separated from Russia and is being led toward the West. Essentially, this is one of the driving themes of Gogol's work; nationalism and loyalty to your native culture, way of life (Andriy).
This leads us to having to consider the perspective from which Gogol had written Taras Bulba. Obviously he wrote it from the Russian perspective for the Russian public, without the foresight that someday it would be read in the West. The issue of anti-Semitism in the story in 19th century Russia would be a nonissue, and indeed, would be judged as another historical occurrence. Gogol's Taras loathes the Jewish merchants for their scheming and cunning (traits the Cossacks are devoid of), through which they've indebted many a Cossack and their churches. These details are used by Gogol to contrast and emphasize the virtuousness of the Cossacks' bravado and honor, as well as to show the grievances they've had to suffer at the hands of foreigners.
The true value of Gogol's work is in his portrayal of the Cossacks nature and their lifestlye. The imagery of life on the beautiful expanse of the steppe is particularly memorable. It is true that the beauty of the language is lost in translation from Russian to English, for Gogol' characters (particularly Taras) speak in a powerful, old-fashioned manner that did much to characterize them.
In order to understand Taras Bulba while reading it you have to have some general understanding of what kind of people the Cossacks were and the land that they came from.

It is easy to imagine an American reader's shock due to the frequent anti-semitism and cold-blooded violence, but you have to keep in mind HISTORICAL CONTEXT and PERSPECTIVE.
Gogol by profession was a historian who was fascinated by his Ukrainian heritage. He had written Taras Bulba based on his historical studies. His work portrays the realities of life on the south Russian (Ukrainian) steppes and the intricate, antagonistic relationships between Cossacks, Tartars, Poles, and the Jews. The actions and behavior of the Cossacks are inherent to the harsh realities of that historical period. The Cossacks do not simply decide to ravage the Poles for fun (although that was part of it) - they retaliate to their transgression on their religion, their land, their way of life.
There is never any question of Cossack identity, and what they represent. At the beginning Gogol poetically describes the Cossacks as a unique manifestation of Russian nature and strength forged by the cruel,rugged conditions of the 16th century. Towards the end, Gogol through Taras speaks of the Russian brotherhood (russkoye tovarischestvo) that is unlike any other. Thus the work is also hugely relevant to contemporary times, when Ukraine has been separated from Russia and is being led toward the West. Essentially, this is one of the driving themes of Gogol's work; nationalism and loyalty to your native culture, way of life (Andriy).
This leads us to having to consider the perspective from which Gogol had written Taras Bulba. Obviously he wrote it from the Russian perspective for the Russian public, without the foresight that someday it would be read in the West. The issue of anti-Semitism in the story in 19th century Russia would be a nonissue, and indeed, would be judged as another historical occurrence. Gogol's Taras loathes the Jewish merchants for their scheming and cunning (traits the Cossacks are devoid of), through which they've indebted many a Cossack and their churches. These details are used by Gogol to contrast and emphasize the virtuousness of the Cossacks' bravado and honor, as well as to show the grievances they've had to suffer at the hands of foreigners.
The true value of Gogol's work is in his portrayal of the Cossacks nature and their lifestlye. The imagery of life on the beautiful expanse of the steppe is particularly memorable. It is true that the beauty of the language is lost in translation from Russian to English, for Gogol' characters (particularly Taras) speak in a powerful, old-fashioned manner that did much to characterize them.
In order to understand Taras Bulba while reading it you have to have some general understanding of what kind of people the Cossacks were and the land that they came from.

Una novela corta de Nicolai Gogol sobre los cosacos ucranianos en el siglo XVI.

Ambientada en el siglo XVI,听" Taras Bulba" es la epopeya, tan breve como bella, de los cosacos del Dni茅per y de la heroica lucha que durante varios siglos sostuvo el pueblo ucraniano para conservar su independencia nacional. Con un acento entre l铆rico y nost谩lgico, con una entonaci贸n 茅pica y vastas met谩foras que recuerdan a los poetas de la antig眉edad cl谩sica, G贸gol canta a la naturaleza poderosa y salvaje de aquellos hombres indomables. Un relato repleto de acci贸n, hero铆smo, traiciones y pasiones en las vastas llanuras de las estepas, cuyo protagonista es uno de esos personajes inolvidables en los que se mezclan mito e historia y que desde su publicaci贸n se convirti贸 en patrimonio inalienable de la literatura.
En esta ocasi贸n G贸gol nos ofrece su visi贸n del pueblo cosaco, un pueblo sin estado, como el kurdo, que vive repartido principalmente entre Ucrania y Rusia, y de forma minoritaria en Kazajist谩n. Es l贸gico que los cosacos fueran una fuente de inspiraci贸n para los escritores del romanticismo, ya que admiraban de este pueblo su amor a la libertad, su valent铆a y su fama como grandes combatientes.
Este magn铆fico relato comienza con los hijos de Taras Bulba, Ostap y Andr铆, regresando a su hogar tras terminar sus estudios en un seminario ortodoxo en Kiev. El anciano Taras decide llevarlos a el Sech, un campamento de cosacos zap贸rogos, para que se conviertan en aut茅nticos guerreros cosacos. Pero, una vez en el Sech, la abulia y la falta de acci贸n que se encuentran har谩n que Taras Bulba arengue a los cosacos del campamento para ir a luchar contra los polacos y defender la fe ortodoxa tras la llegada de unos viajeros que dan noticia de las vejaciones que viven los ortodoxos听por parte de jud铆os y cat贸licos en Ucrania, en los dominios del听hetman. Por este motivo, los zap贸rogos se deciden a realizar una incursi贸n para asediar el castillo de Dubno. Es entonces cuando Andr铆, a trav茅s de una mujer t谩rtara, entra en el castillo, a partir de aqu铆 el amor hacia una noble polaca, que es una de las sitiadas dentro del castillo, colmar谩 completamente su coraz贸n y su mente...(esta parte en cuesti贸n est谩 relatada con una pluma que muy pocos escritores tienen, que prosa po茅tica tan maravillosa la de G贸gol, creo que nunca me cansar茅 de leerlo y releerlo...)
Nikol谩i G贸gol realiza en听"Taras Bulba"听un descripci贸n rom谩ntica de los cosacos, pero tambi茅n resalta el realismo, costumbrismo naturalista y la 茅pica, mucha 茅pica. G贸gol nos sumerge de lleno en el intenso estilo de vida cosaco y realiza v铆vidas descripciones del car谩cter cosaco, de sus costumbres como, por ejemplo los bailes y las borracheras sin fin (eso s铆, mientras no est谩n luchando), el modo de elecci贸n y cese de los l铆deres cosacos, de los paisajes de Ucrania, las estepas y las batallas. Taras Bulba es descrito como un anciano sabio y lleno de vitalidad, aunque en ocasiones la pasi贸n nuble su juicio. Su hijo Ostap es un cosaco leal a su cultura y es capaz de realizar sacrificios por el bien de su pueblo, en este sentido es una prolongaci贸n (y digno heredero) de los valores y del car谩cter de su padre. Mientras que Andr铆 es todo lo contrario a su padre y a su hermano, de naturaleza enamoradiza no dudar谩 en dar la espalda a su familia y al resto de cosacos por amor; en Andr铆 se puede reconocer apenas sin esfuerzo al arquetipo del h茅roe rom谩ntico. Aunque G贸gol parece sentir m谩s simpat铆as por el viejo Taras y su fuerte car谩cter y determinaci贸n, que no flaquea ante la presencia femenina como s铆 hace su hijo Andr铆. Por otra parte las mujeres en听"Taras Bulba"听tienen un papel secundario y casi se limitan a ser descritas como bellas, sensuales, p谩lidas, delicadas y vunerables y no son m谩s que el reflejo de la sensibilidad e ideal rom谩nticos de Nikol谩i G贸gol: "atractiva y voluble; 茅sta era una belleza, una mujer en todo el apogeo de su hermosura".
Desde hace d茅cadas, y esto tengo que decirlo, se ha denunciado que听"Taras Bulba"听es una novela antisemita o anticat贸lica, pues los jud铆os est谩n estereotipados y llegan a ser maltratados muy cruelmente en la novela. Pero hay que tener en cuenta el contexto en que fue escrita (siglo XIX), en el contexto en el que se sit煤a la acci贸n (siglo XVI) y entender la estrecha relaci贸n de los cosacos con la Iglesia Ortodoxa, que era una parte integral de la vida, la cultura y la identidad cosacas. Tildar a Nikol谩i G贸gol o a听"Taras Bulba"听de antisemitas o anticat贸licos es, simple y llanamente, nadar en la superficie y no (querer) entender que lo que en esta novela se muestra es un retrato fiel de aquella sociedad donde no se condena ni se alaban estas conductas.
"Taras Bulba"听no es 煤nicamente un cl谩sico de la literatura universal, es un canto a la libertad y una declaraci贸n de amor que Nikol谩i G贸gol escribe a Ucrania. Pero tambi茅n es una obra cargada de simbolismo (c贸mo olvidar esa pipa, alegor铆a de la autoridad pero tambi茅n de la identidad y la cultura cosacas), dramatismo, acci贸n y pasi贸n. Y es que desde pr谩cticamente el principio de la obra la acci贸n no deja de ir en un constante听in crescendo听hasta que llegamos a un emocionante y cat谩rtico final en que el dramatismo alcanza su tr谩gico y fatalista cl铆max. Esta novela es una obra genuinamente rom谩ntica y todo lector que guste de una buena novela de aventuras decimon贸nica, de la novela hist贸rica etc, no tiene m谩s que abrir este librito, dejarse llevar de la mano por este gran escritor ucraniano en lengua rusa y disfrutar de las aventuras de este viejo cosaco. 隆Cabalguemos junto a Taras Bulba y el resto de cosacos zap贸rogos en una impetuosa incursi贸n o una apasionante aventura!.

Aunque G贸gol parece sentir m谩s simpat铆as por el viejo Taras y su fuerte car谩cter y determinaci贸n, que no flaquea ante la presencia femenina como s铆 hace su hijo Andr铆. Por otra parte las mujeres en听"Taras Bulba"听tienen un papel secundario y casi se limitan a ser descritas como bellas, sensuales, p谩lidas, delicadas y vunerables y no son m谩s que el reflejo de la sensibilidad e ideal rom谩nticos de Nikol谩i G贸gol: "atractiva y voluble; 茅sta era una belleza, una mujer en todo el apogeo de su hermosura".
Desde hace d茅cadas, y esto tengo que decirlo, se ha denunciado que听"Taras Bulba"听es una novela antisemita o anticat贸lica, pues los jud铆os est谩n estereotipados y llegan a ser maltratados muy cruelmente en la novela. Pero hay que tener en cuenta el contexto en que fue escrita (siglo XIX), en el contexto en el que se sit煤a la acci贸n (siglo XVI) y entender la estrecha relaci贸n de los cosacos con la Iglesia Ortodoxa, que era una parte integral de la vida, la cultura y la identidad cosacas. Tildar a Nikol谩i G贸gol o a听"Taras Bulba"听de antisemitas o anticat贸licos es, simple y llanamente, nadar en la superficie y no (querer) entender que lo que en esta novela se muestra es un retrato fiel de aquella sociedad donde no se condena ni se alaban estas conductas.
"Taras Bulba"听no es 煤nicamente un cl谩sico de la literatura universal, es un canto a la libertad y una declaraci贸n de amor que Nikol谩i G贸gol escribe a Ucrania. Pero tambi茅n es una obra cargada de simbolismo (c贸mo olvidar esa pipa, alegor铆a de la autoridad pero tambi茅n de la identidad y la cultura cosacas), dramatismo, acci贸n y pasi贸n. Y es que desde pr谩cticamente el principio de la obra la acci贸n no deja de ir en un constante听in crescendo听hasta que llegamos a un emocionante y cat谩rtico final en que el dramatismo alcanza su tr谩gico y fatalista cl铆max. Esta novela es una obra genuinamente rom谩ntica y todo lector que guste de una buena novela de aventuras decimon贸nica, de la novela hist贸rica etc, no tiene m谩s que abrir este librito, dejarse llevar de la mano por este gran escritor ucraniano en lengua rusa y disfrutar de las aventuras de este viejo cosaco. 隆Cabalguemos junto a Taras Bulba y el resto de cosacos zap贸rogos en una impetuosa incursi贸n o una apasionante aventura!.

Who would dare to give Gogol fewer than 5 stars? I can just imagine his cringe at a 3 or 4 star rating -- and of course you'd be risking his throwing the whole manuscript into the fire. I'm ashamed to say that after years of reading Slavic lit, this is the first time I've read TARAS. I didn't expect TB to be fun, like DEAD SOULS, and I knew it wouldn't be spooky like "Portrait" or even "Overcoat," but I was taken aback by how painful it was. I don't think I've ever had such mixed feelings about a protagonist. I was also surprised by the Christ-like imagery in the last couple of chapters. Brilliant. One more reason to love Gogol.
