Yukine learns more spells. Yato learns some spoilery stuff. We the readers learn who is behind the masks. But our heroine is stuck with boring old school life and awkward blind dates. Poor Ika!
After the last volume of Noragami, I couldn't decide whether I liked Yato or not. He went from one extreme to the next, from loud and obnoxious to quiet and vulnerable. Volume 8 goes a long way to explain this dichotomy of personality within Yato.
The volume opens with Yato seemingly under house arrest by a mysterious figure that Yato refers to as his father. This situation is not a new occurrence and Yato reflects on this cycle of where he is permitted freedom only to be reigned back in and controlled by his father. Yato, a god of calamity, finds himself assigned to the basest of assignments to fulfill, which he does as apparently he has no choice, but his eyes deaden with the work. He would rather be a god that brings joy to humans.
So, I finally feel like I have a grasp on Yato's character. His needy persona is only that - a mask - to hide from confronting the emotional abuse he's suffered (he is visibly shaken at his father's voice). In order to survive as a god, Yato must be remembered by humans, which explains why his tenuous link to Hiyori means so much to him and why he can be overbearing at times. He's in essence, pretty desperate.
A question comes to mind regarding who this father of Yato's is. Yato has mentioned a few times thus far that whatever a god does is right. If his father is also a god, does that mean that whatever he does to Yato - the abuse, the control - is right, too? I don't think so, so it makes me think that maybe gods are more fallible than Yato would want to think. Maybe this train of thought is what he has used to accept his situation.
I love a series that gets to me like Noragami has. Add gorgeous artwork and it's the whole package. Highly recommended.
The series took a turn towards the darker side in this volume. Yato's past is looming all over this one, with the sad notes by Hyori, who is starting to forget them.
Consider a world where the famous mascot of an international media and entertainment juggernaut known for movies, TV shows, & theme parks...was a capybara instead of a mouse. ... THE WORLD OF NORAGAMI IS VERY WEIRD INDEED!
But back to the ongoing story, our beloved hobo deity is now under the thumb of a mysterious father and forced to do this enigmatic, offscreen presence's bidding. Thankfully it's been assassinations of scumbags, but the way things can change in an instant, it might not all be for the greater good after all. And while the heavenly realms are all a-tizzy because of the specially cursed bad spirits roaming about, the high school girl who is our audience surrogate has a fun day at NOT!Disneyland and subsequently is on the verge of forgetting the god of vagabonds & all her adventures involving the supernatural. Ah shoot, are we going to have to constantly fight the Narnia/Neverland/Digimon syndrome of forgetting the magic of childhood here too?
Into the second season territory yato and Ebisu travel deep into Yomi. Hiyori almost forgets about Yato and Yukine, and there is fighting among the heavens. A great volume, i'm still behind by like 10 volumes but i'm slowly catching up

It's not quite the same with Yato separated from his friends. It's interesting to see what's going on with Hiyori though.
Edit: Still loving the thorough translation notes. I really appreciate the translators walking through their thought process, even if I don't always agree with some of them.
They keep mentioning the name of the god place, I wish that was mentioned in the translator notes (maybe it was mentioned before and I missed it?)
Buah como adoro este manga. Adoro muchísimo la relación entre Yato y Hiyori, y la verdad es que avanzado más el manga, no entiendo como decidieron edulcorar tanto el anime (porque se nota en varias escenas).
I am curious to see what will happen with “evil Yato” & the stray. I have so many questions! I was a sad when Hiyori almost forgot Yukine & Yato. The new guy/boyfriend is shady, I do not trust him !
There were some parts in this volume that I didn't see in its anime. We see Yatogami's dark side this time and find out who is crafter and what is his/her reasons to naming Ayakashies.
Another solid installment! I can see now where the end of the anime started cutting scenes out—it's great to be able to get the full picture. Even if some of the cut scenes are pretty darn depressing, they give me FEELS so I'm loving them.
So Yato has a father who seems a bit of a bastard haha. Yato disappeared with Nora fulfill a task. Apparently, Nora (Hiro) is loyal to Yato's dad.
The task was to save Ebisu from the underworld. Ebisu went to a quest to find this kotonoha which will be essential to become a mage.ma god who wants to be a mage is quite confusing for Yato but he decided to save him anyway.
Yato matures a bit in this volume. He said he wants to make people happy, especially Hiyori.
Yato is so vulnerable here and it made my heart ache. And that bastard of a guy stole Hiyori's first kiss! Ebisu is a very interesting character ( also handsome ). However the best part is where Kazumi teaches Yukine spells.
So Yato's trapped with his sister Nora & his father & they're making him do these awful jobs of killing people (who are bad to begin with, but still...) & he wants to go back home to Hiyori so she won't forget him & they say if he does one last job, he'll be free to go, so he agrees. But they're going into the Underworld for this 'job,' he & Nora. Meanwhile, Hiyori's busy with school & stuff & goes on a triple date with her friends to Capyperland - this place Yato loves & wants to see - & over there, she starts forgetting stuff & can't remember who Yato & Yukine are & OMG THE GUY SHE CAME WITH KISSES HER GROSS WHO THE FUCK HE THINK HE IS BITCH BACK OFF. And she remembers Yato when she runs into Yukine —who has been practicing his spell techniques with Kazuma & has gotten good at them - meanwhile, the Heavens called another meeting & got evidence that Ebisu is the sorcerer controlling the ayakashi & they go have his home searched & are killing his Shinki. AND WHO DOES YATO ENCOUNTER IN THE UNDERWORLD. EBISU. AND HE IS LOOKING FOR THE WORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD WITH WHICH HE WILL BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE AYAKASHI. And Yato & Nora's job is to save him. And the volume ends with them encountering Izanami :O

This was such a dark and heavy volume. I'm really interested in learning more about Yato's backstory but damn, I can tell it's gonna hurt. I'm curious to know more about his father too and their relationship. Seeing Yato be gone from Hiyori and Yukine was sad, especially when Hiyori slowly started to forget him. I'm scared to see what happens when he comes back.
Seeing the council again was fascinating. I wasn't expecting to see all of the 7 gods of fortunes. It was upsetting to see how Ebisu's shinki were treated just because the majority of them were strays. I'm not sure how I feel about Ebisu as a whole, but seeing his shinki be attacked and killed was just wrong. (I really liked Ebisu and Yato's interactions! They were really funny together). I wasn't expecting that Yato's dad wanted Yato to save Ebisu. I wonder what he is playing at and what the long game for him is. I wonder if Hiyori will be able to find Yato and if she will end up encountering his father. I also want to know more about the stray's motives but I feel like there are moments where it seems like she cares about Yato.
