Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also spelt Saratchandra) (Bengali: 唳多Π唰庎唳ㄠ唳︵唳� 唳氞唰嵿唰嬥Κ唳距Η唰嵿Ο唳距Ο唳�) was a legendary Bengali novelist from India. He was one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the early 20th century.
His childhood and youth were spent in dire poverty as his father, Motilal Chattopadhyay, was an idler and dreamer and gave little security to his five children. Saratchandra received very little formal education but inherited something valuable from his father鈥攈is imagination and love of literature.
He started writing in his early teens and two stories written then have survived鈥斺€楰orel鈥� and 鈥楰ashinath鈥�. Saratchandra came to maturity at a time when the national movement was gaining momentum together with an awakening of social consciousness.
Much of his writing bears the mark of the resultant turbulence of society. A prolific writer, he found the novel an apt medium for depicting this and, in his hands, it became a powerful weapon of social and political reform.
Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of thousands of readers not only in Bengal but all over India.
Some of his best known novels are Palli Samaj (1916), Charitraheen (1917), Devdas (1917), Nishkriti (1917), Srikanta in four parts (1917, 1918, 1927 and 1933), Griha Daha (1920), Sesh Prasna (1929) and Sesher Parichay published posthumously (1939).

I'm forever indebted to the deprived, ordinary people who give this world everything they have and yet receive nothing in return, to the weak and oppressed people whose tears nobody bothers to notice and to the endlessly hassled, distressed (weighed down by life) and helpless people who don't even have a moment to think that: despite having everything, they have right to nothing. They made me start to speak. They inspired me to take up their case and plead for them. I have witnessed endless injustice to these people, unfair intolerable indiscriminate justice. It's true that springs do come to this world for some - full of beauty and wealth - with its sweet smelling breeze perfumed with newly bloomed flowers and spiced with cuckoo's song, but such good things remained well outside the sphere where my sight remained imprisoned. This poverty abounds in my writings."

I have always heard Sarat Chandra's name spoken with a certain reverence, but, as with most Bengali authors, only his adapted-to-screen works are the most talked about. Besides, this one has a lot of ambivalent takes, which is a first for me.
I don't understand what the fuss is about. First, this is a very well-written socio-political drama about caste discrimination, greed, envy and similar other 'virtues' of the then village society. It is raw and rugged, as ought to be, and does a lot of things but never sugarcoats the words that come out of the characters' mouths. At the same time, it meanders and never quite progresses: not in a cyclical way, but rather, like it oscillates between two fixed points set too close to perceive. It can be described most aptly as a string of events, each about our protagonist simultaneously trying to do good to the village and overcome the obstacles placed in front of him by his opposition.
Also, I never trust a character without a dark side. And the story is in too much black and white. But still, quite a worthy read; one might find structural similarities with but that's irrelevant.

A good book will keep you thinking even after you have finished reading it. I think that is why a lot of good authors do not have a definite ending or conclusion in their book and leave it up to the imagination of its readers. Such is the book 'Palli Samaj' written by Late Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, an author who received equal criticism and praises for his work throughout.
This may be a biased review because this is the first Bengali classic that I have picked up and this book has left me mesmerized and emotional. Such beautiful depiction of characters and their personalities were sketched so beautifully - Raw, grey, real, and imperfect.
My grandma always wanted me to learn how to read Bangla so that I could get my hands on a few life-changing classics. That couldn't happen, but thanks to the good translated versions by Prasanjit Mukherjee- the purpose is solved.
About the Author:
Late Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, known for his heart-touching work like Devdas, Srikanto, Choritrohin, etc has never failed to throw light on the practices and beliefs of Rural Bengal and addresses serious issues prevailing in the society.
He had faced a lot of bitter and hostile criticism from many pockets of the society for outlining the realities that hid behind the blanket of casteism, rituals, and blind worship.
About the novel:
The book covers the darker areas of contemporary rural Bengal and how everyone is chained to a mediocre, rather low level, caste-based thinking. This book received a lot of criticism initially because the society back then was not ready to see the reality and the 'bolder' version of the society and labeled it immoral and destructive. A lot of issues addressed in this book may not be relevant today, but I think grey areas still prevail in the so-called modern societies today.
The book lifts the layer of perception that an outsider creates about a rural life and boldly shows the realities prevailing in a rural society. Ramesh, a young Roorke trained engineer tries to change the mindset of the villagers and give them a better approach towards life and living. His journey to make the rural pocket a better place to live is poisoned with casteism and corruption. Winning comes with a cost, and Ramesh had to pay a heavy price throughout the journey to his victory.
My review -
What I loved the most about this book is it's an unfiltered, raw, bold, and real version of our society, whether urban or rural. The shades of grey in every character, including the protogonist, will help you develop a close relationship with them keeping you engaged throughout. Even if you take breaks while reading, you will not lose the link - that is the impact of the story and characters from the book. When the whole village sins, everyone drowns together, and when the whole village finally sees light, it rises together. Sarat Chandra has captured every dirt, filth, politics, poisonous mindsets, narrow mentality, goodness, love, affection, enmity, etc and depicted it beautifully through his work, cover to cover. I do not think it is limited only till rural India but is widespread even to the society where we live in today.
A must-read for all those who are looking forward to getting indulged in reading cult classics of Bengal.

What I loved the most about this book is it's an unfiltered, raw, bold, and real version of our society, whether urban or rural. The shades of grey in every character, including the protogonist, will help you develop a close relationship with them keeping you engaged throughout. Even if you take breaks while reading, you will not lose the link - that is the impact of the story and characters from the book. When the whole village sins, everyone drowns together, and when the whole village finally sees light, it rises together. Sarat Chandra has captured every dirt, filth, politics, poisonous mindsets, narrow mentality, goodness, love, affection, enmity, etc and depicted it beautifully through his work, cover to cover. I do not think it is limited only till rural India but is widespread even to the society where we live in today.
A must-read for all those who are looking forward to getting indulged in reading cult classics of Bengal.

It is a story based in 19th century Bengal, the society was ridden by caste system back then, it was thriving like a poison ivy, covering, choking the entire society. The expertise with which Sharatchandra has captured this poisonous mindset in this novel is powerful, very powerful! It is not for children, teenagers, the young people may fail to grasp its depth, how these customs rot and ruin the society by the poison that rot creates is very directly shared in this story.

My second sarat chandra, as amazing as the first one 'the final question'. The social issues of pre independence era india taken up and addressed through a simple plot cannot lose relevance even today. His works can be used as handbooks on how stigmas and several practices should have been/ should be tackled by the educated. Palli samaj is the story of a wealthy lower cast man who returns to his village after his father's death and sets out to reform the place. His eventual successes at the cost of relationships lost makes this a must read for anyone interested in Indian literature.

Life of a village.. there are times when you get tired of fast & self centered city life and you feel like running away and settling in a small village with simple people and simple lives. But this novel is an eye opener that no matter where you run situation is just the same only the the faces are different, the issues, psychology, problems, evils are just the same. tHe same story applies to our corporate world. No matter where you go the same politics, people & survival of the fittest.
So what is the solution.. the solution is to stay & fight back. May be even the people you love go against you, cheat you, harm you.. but eventually if you are right noone can stop you. Sooner or later the wrong looses and the right wins... Whatever one does s/he has to bear in this life. There is no rebirth or heaven or hell. Everything is here & now.

The novel is a very true pen picture of society. Though Sarat chose to call it Polli Shomaj, I think it holds true for every society, be it in a hip city or a satellite town. People are essentially self centered and opportunists and often altruism is looked down upon as a waste of one鈥檚 time and effort. The kind man becomes the butt of cruel jokes and an out-caste, till he is able to prove his prowess, by constant sacrifice. But, can human race really survive without such saintly creatures, is a question that requires much pondering.
