Darkest Powers #2

The Awakening

Rate this book
If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl - someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I’m as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment - not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters. I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

Now I’m running for my life with three of my supernatural friends - a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch - and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

The Awakening is a somewhat traditional second book in a trilogy in that some of it seems to be filler while we wait to find out what happens in the climax.
It's good filler, though.
The idea that there are secret supernatural groups out there is very cool, but then add in the genetic experimentation on their own kind gone wrong, and it goes up to a whole new level.

description

The book opens with Chloe in some sort of a hospital that is obviously someplace you don't want to be unless your idea of a good time is to be experimented on and then murdered.
And she knows this because ghosts like to chat her up.

description

This is directly where the last book left off, so you don't have any time gaps to contend with, which is pretty great since I'm reading them back to back this time around.
I also like that Chole isn't an idiot who has to be convinced something is desperately wrong. The whole thing stinks like a cheese fart, so she's actively looking for a way out the entire time she's there. The plan is to reunite with Simon & Derek, who managed to escape capture, so they can resume trying to get the hell away from the Edison Group. Eventually, she does get out - with the reluctant help of her old nemesis, Tori.
Then the four of them hit the open road.

description

The vast majority of this book focuses on these kids trying to stay under the radar and get to somewhere safe.
I really liked how there was no romantic-y garbage going on here. Chole and Derek get to know each other because they have to in order to survive. And even though Simon is the typical hot artistic boy, and Chloe is the typical cute but doesn't know it girl, they aren't making mush eyes at each other instead of being worried about getting killed by mad scientists.

description

I remembered liking this series so much when I first read it, but I'm surprised at how well it has held up over the past 11 years.
Unbelievably, this is still one of my favorite Young Adult stories.

The second book in the Darkest Powers series is just as engaging as the first, more creepy action and a more Derek. I am in love with this boy, I wanna go in the book and drop kick Chloe, so she can see what she is missing. I will say they have a lot of scenes alone together and they make me very happy.

For all y’all who don’t know Chloe is a new discovered necromancer ( able to awaken the dead), first she thought she was schizo but it was discovered that the home she was sent to after experiencing seeing a ghost, were finding ways to harvest her powers. Well after breaking loose, Chloe and her entourage are now on the run. We have Tori the sarcastic rich girl, Simon the ever so sweet gentleman, Derek the leader and authority figure of the group, and of course sweet and naïve Chloe.

Its interesting to see these very young people go out and fend for themselves. They no longer can call parents for help because they might be placed in danger, some are the bad guys and others have already gone missing. Everyday is a journey of survival and new realities. Plus this foursome bring the laughs and good times.

Kelley Armstrong is able to grab the reader and never let go, the relationships are real and very sweet. I am blown away by how a guy described as being ugly, can come off as the sexiest being. What this book lacks is romance but it is there if you manage to read between the lines. Overall an action packed book, with creepy dead things and just a pure thrilling ride.

Peeved- They talk about a necklace and I have yet to see the significance, all I know is the color has changed.

The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2), Kelley Armstrong

The Darkest Powers is a series of paranormal novels by Kelley Armstrong. The series revolves around The Edison Group, a team of supernatural scientists, and the subjects they have experimented on.

The Awakening takes place directly after the events in The Summoning. Chloe has been recaptured by The Edison Group, a team of supernatural scientists responsible for manipulating her DNA, therefore enhancing her necromantic abilities. While there, she discovers that she, and other supernaturals are experimental subjects who were genetically modified at birth.

Chloe and Victoria Enright (Tori, a witch) lead the Edison Group to a factory where they were supposed to meet Derek and Simon.

Chloe and Tori escape with help from Liz after struggling with Tori's mother, Diane (also a witch), but not before Diane hits Chloe's aunt Lauren with a seemingly fatal spell. The two girls run and hide.

Chloe reads a letter her Aunt Lauren gave her which explains that she only ever wanted to help young supernaturals but it wasn't until her own niece was in danger that she realized how dangerous the Edison Group was. The letter also reveals that Chloes mom had a brother, who died (possibly through suicide) due to a mishap with his powers.

The next day, they meet up with Derek and Simon at the factory. The four of them decide to find Simon and Derek's father (Kit Bae) friend Andrew Carson, who will surely be able to give them a place to stay. He lives in New York, so they decide to take a bus and work from there.

On the bus to New York City, Chloe is woken by Derek who tells her that he feels another change coming on. She offers to go with him and asks Tori to tell Simon that if they don't make it back to the bus, they will meet up in New York City.

They get off the bus and find some woods near a service station, where Derek prepares for his change. Just like before, it doesn't work.

He is exhausted afterwards, so Chloe tells him to get some sleep and they will get on another bus in the morning.

After he falls asleep Chloe witnesses the murder of a young girl in the same patch of woods.

After realizing she cannot interact with it, and that it repeats over and over, she realizes that it is a memory from the real murder than occurred there before. She does not sleep that night, for fear of the girl's body still being there in the woods.

I don't know how I feel about this one. I mean the kids are out there trying to get way from the evil people that are trying to hurt them. And we find out some reasons as to why they are the kind of supernaturals that they are but I was just sort of meh.

I will say that I loved to get more time with Chloe and Derek. I really love Derek's character! And we learn more about the families of the kids. There is also more action with the supernatural abilities of some of the adults and kids but I still couldn't get into it all the way.

Sometimes I wonder if it's the mood I'm in or if I really did just like the book and not love it to death. One will never know unless of course you read it again.

Chloe, Rae and Tori are in cells at The Edison Group after they tried to escape with Derek and Simon in the first book. A bunch of stuff happens and Tori and Chloe get away and meet up with the boys. Then more stuff happens and it's a little cray. I also really love the ghost, Liz, in the book too. I hope we get to find out something good for her in the next book.

I did enjoy the book, I'm just mad that I didn't love it to death, but we can love them all that way right?

As seen on

The second book in "Darkest Powers" trilogy starts where the first one left off - Chloe is at the research institute and contemplating escape. What follows is pretty much Chloe's and her friends' journey to get to the person who might be able to help them find Derek's and Simon's father (which is I suppose is what this trilogy is about, but I am not sure at this point).

The first book in the trilogy was undoubtedly drawn out and artificially extended, but this second book sure beats that. While "The Summoning" had at least some semblance of a story (specifically, the discovery of the true nature of Lyle House), "The Awakening" is truly 400 pages of filler. Almost nothing is added to the main story arc - only 3 pages describing the purpose of the experiments on supernaturals and the idea that Derek's and Simon's father can be found with the help of his friend - Andrew. The rest of the book is pretty much limited to: hiding in various warehouses (150 pages), hiding in an abandoned house (50 pages), riding a bus to Andrew's house (150 pages), and finally meeting Andrew (10 pages). "The Awakening" truly has no climax of any sort. It reads as a boring series of events that serve no purpose but to develop the characters, which is fine, when not used so shamelessly to fill pages and pages at the expense of the real plot. There are some nice Derek/Chloe moments, and only these moments save the book from being a complete waste of time.

If I had hopes that the trilogy would pick up after a rather slow first book, I don't have them any more. The second book proved to be as boring of a read as the first one, and even worse. This is a pity, because Armstrong knows how to write an engaging and tightly plotted book. This Darkest Powers "trilogy" however is a shameless attempt to extend 250 pages of story into 3 books 400 pages each.

I am not sure if I will ever get back to this series. I expect I will not be able to remember much about it even a month later.

Still loving my decision to reread this series. Yes, it's a little juvenile in it's scope but it holds such nostalgia value to me that I can't help but still love it.

As far as middle books go, this one is solid. The stakes get higher and more background is revealed about our main characters and even the Edison Group itself. And of course there's no solid ending, just more mystery that ensures you will read the final book.

I really feel like the characters are finally coming into their own as well. They are learning to trust themselves and each other, but stay wary of outsiders. I liked reading about them discovering more about their powers. Tori was always the shock here. While you still don't like her, you understand her more and why she is the way that she is. I ultimately believe that she wants friends and she wants to be liked, but doesn't know how to go about making that happen. She just keeps putting up shields and pushing people away. But with a mother like hers, can you blame her?

But it's mostly our main three who run this show: Chloe, Derek and Simon. I love their relationship with each other but you just know problems are about to come because brothers can't like the same girl and it end happy.

And now on to book 3!

BEWARE FOR SPOILERS FOR THE SERIES! This whole review can - probably - contain spoilers for the entire series. This review is mostly for me to remember the details.

Re-read: 04.05.2018 . I decided to continue with the re-read with this series. I'm not overly fond with it, never have been, but the story (plot) has some real potential. I just wished the characters where older. 15 and 16 is so young, and blushing because someone holds your hand..... it's too immature for my taste. This book should've been a NA. I'm just saying. Overall, it's better than the first book, that's for sure. Something happened all the time and at least Derek's treatment was better in this one. Derek is, without doubt, my favorite character in this series, and I don't like my favorite character being treated wrong. Good thing Chloe was getting better with treating my boy better. She don't deserve him. She's so blind.
Tori waited until he was gone, then shuddered. “Okay, Derek always weirded me out, but that wolf man stuff is seriously creepy. Suits him, I suppose. A creepy power for a creepy guy.
“I thought he looked better.
She stared at me.
“What? He does. Probably because he’s starting his wolf changes and he’s not stressed out about being in Lyle House. That must help.
“You know what would really help? Shampoo. Deodorant—
I raised my hand to cut her off. “He smelled fine, so don’t start that. I’m sure he’s wearing deodorant and—for once—it’s working. As for showers, they’re a little hard to come by on the street, and we won’t look much better soon.
“Do you think he doesn’t know what you’re saying? News flash—he’s not stupid.
Derek was all too aware of the impression he made. At Lyle House, he’d showered twice a day, and it still hadn’t fixed the puberty smackdown.

The characters:

“You didn't answer my question. Are you all right?
“I didn't do anything
“Yeah. You did. He looked at me. “You did a lot.

The Awakening is even more enticing and action packed than its prequel. While the setting shifts, it is no less menacing as Chloe and the gang face a grim and tretcherous life on the streets. Tension is heightened by the added appeal of a perfectly sinister and powerful enemy and the suspense of unknown supernatural powers. Armstrong's teen characters are smart and resourceful, and each obstacle thrown their way requires them to use every bit of caution, wits, and intelligence they possess. Armstrong focuses a little more on the technical aspects of the teens' powers and abilities, especially as Derek and Chloe explore their capabilities and restraints. Their difficulties and the tension that they face help them grow as characters and make them more appealing. My crush on Derek has increased ten fold. The Awakening is a dark, gripping, and highly suspenseful read will have readers staying up to all hours of the night and leave them desperate for the next installment!

Alas, this is where Chloe Saunders and I must part ways. As with the first book, I just couldn't stop myself from wanting to call it quits after about half of the book. There's just something about the storyline and this little necromancer that doesn't seem to captivate me despite how much I love a great paranorm.

Now, I'm actually apologizing upfront for my rant that is about to unfold, but it's only because my fellow group of trusted readers loved this book and I couldn't I just couldn't I tried but it didn't happen. *whimpers is shame*

There's quite a bit that fuels my annoyance with The Awakening and let me just start with demi-demons??? Reeeaaalllllyyyy??? Okay, so I understand the whole concept of a demi-gods - when a god procreates with a human and vio-la! You get a demi-god. Okay, that I can handle and actually it's rather fascinating and worthy of my time and attention. But get this, according to Armstrong, you get a demi-demon by mutating the genetic make-up of a demon and as a result you get a human with less subtle demon powers and the added benefit of an attitude problem and anger management issues. Wait! I guess there is no benefit. Either way it's laughable at best.

Okay so these mutations are conducted by The Edison Company. Where do they get the name you ask? Again get this this group of twisted scientists are named after Thomas Edison who not only invented some sound devices such as the phonograph, motion picture camera and the crafty little light bulb, but what I bet you didn't know is that he attempted to invent a device intended to contact the dead. Okay, I ask did I read that right?^^ I'm sure I did, but just humor me for a bit. I think our history books are in need of a revision. So, this worthy set of scientists run their experiments and when the study goes array, they dispose of the subjects. Not so much of a problem if they were lab rats or guinea pigs (Well for animal humane societies, it might be an issue and nothing against rats or guineas) but unfortunately their subjects are TEENAGERS! So yes, they dispose of teenagers when their experiments fail. That's eff'ed up to say the least.

Now on to the characters. There is not a one that I liked. Well maybe the ghost Liz was cool, but all the other characters were worthy of a head shake IMHO. Chloe is not a very bright girl and many of her attempts to either escape, manipulate/lie to the adults, fight off batty ghouls, dead people or wolves are just simply too drawn out or end up in failure. And she really needs to learn how to hold onto a knife! It's actually rather irritating. A smarter maybe more conniving Chloe would have been fun to read about. Rae?? Ugh! Tory?? Double up Ugh.Ugh. (Yes, I still have that song in my head.) Simon and Derek ohhhh Simon and Derek. What's to like about these two characters? One suffers from a puberty smack down and a bad case of body odor. Now, I understand Derek can't help his acne and BO, but if Armstrong was going to emphasize his insignificant flaws (notice my emphasis on insignificant), give him some character elements worthy of applause. But no, you have Simon that is simply his brother's shadow and Derek who's either brooding all the time or losing his temper. Oh that's right, his genetic makeup was altered so he can't help being in a constant state of anger.

For most of the book, they spend hiding out in warehouses, catching buses, eating junk food and fighting off bats, ghouls, and wolves. Sounds like a fun adventure, right? But nope, I lost interest early on and never really found myself drawn back into the story. I guess this is just the rare occasion where the paranorm element wasn't enough to take me on a fictional adventure. Sorry, but that's just where it stood. :(

Review Edit: I cleared Simon up of his acne that never existed. :)

Chloe Saunders is back in the second book of the Darkest Powers series. If you haven't read The Summoning yet read it before reading this review. SPOILERS.

At the end of the first book Chloe and Rae go to Chloe's Aunt Lauren for help, not knowing that she is working for the very group that they are trying to escape from. As a result, Chloe and Rae end up locked in a high security warehouse that houses the Edison Groups many experiments. Luckily, Derek and Simon are still on the run and on the lookout for Chloe and Rae.

After encountering ghosts of some of the former Lyle House occupants Chloe decides to take matters into her own hands and figure out a way to escape, this time for good. With the help of Liz's ghost and a trapped demi-demon Chloe manages to find more information about the Edison group and how she can possibly escape from them.

Once away from the Edison group Chloe is forced to face the reality of living on the run with nowhere and nobody to turn to other than Tori, Derek, and Simon. Her father has posted a $500,000 reward for her safe return and the Edison group is no longer worried about keeping any of them alive.

Will Chloe and the others be able to outrun the Edison group or will their luck finally run out? Will Chloe ever figure out what her true feelings are for Derek and Simon?

The Darkest Powers series is full of paranormal happenings, betrayal, and budding romance. I highly recommend this series for any fans of the Twilight series. Definitely not the same story line but just as good.

I remember finishing the The Summoning, the prequel to The Awakening, last summer and thinking, " I doubt Kelley will be able to top this." Though, apparently she can, as she has proven it with The Awakening.

In The Awakening more action and intense drama occurs. As well as major character development. Since, Tori, Chloe, Derek, and Simon's powers began to involve steadily in the book. Also, there was more information told and found out about the Edison Group and werewolves which was fascinating in any case.

Derek and Chloe? Yep, their relationship defiantly grew throughout The Awakening and made it one of my favorite parts. I swear I will scream if they don't get together by the end of this series. Since, they are so cute with their bickering and how they always protect each other.

Overall, The Awakening will have any fan of the Darkest Powers Trilogy begging for a sequel by the end. I look forward to reading the next book, tremendously. I wish Spring 2010 would come faster.

Probably not quite 4 stars but ...this is just one of those series where I want to read all three novels before I really give a solid opinion, but so far I like where it seems to be headed. The pacing could be better (meaning I wouldn't complain if things moved along somewhat) and the relationships could be clearer but overall it's a pleasant experience and I'm eager to read the final book.

Book 1 focused more on world-building while as this one was all about the action; the kids are still on the run from the Edison Group, Souza had his first encounter with werewolves and it did NOT go well, and living on the streets comes with its own set of challenges as well. I’ve enjoyed watching Chloe and Derek’s relationship progress throughout this trilogy, they get lots of alone time in this installment, and their dialogue is definitely one of the highlights of this story. Unfortunately this novel was somewhat bogged down by Tori’s annoying POV, and the characters run-in with the wolves gave me some pause because it took place near Syracuse, NY which is close to the North American Pack’s home base, and none of the WOTO weres would have dealt with a youngin the way Derek was treated in THE AWAKENING. Mutts? Anyway, another quick and satisfying listen from Armstrong.

Cassandra Morris narration was appropriate for these audiobooks, her voice fit that of the fifteen year old MC’s, and she incorporated Chloe’s speech impediment into the dialogue admirably. However, as the story progressed and the heroine evolved, the child-like tone would have benefited from a slight adjustment. I had zero issues with listening to these installments one after the other because the performance was homogeneous, and the character voices didn’t deviate. The pacing did Armstrong’s writing style proud, and the built-in creep factor that comes with seeing ghosts was always present. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another Young Adult title that featured Morris as the narrator.

I'm just confused as to why these books are so long! If I thought this would be an improvement on the first, it's not. This time there's no plot or climax whatsoever. It's about four supernatural teenagers on the run from an experimental group that was holding them hostage in the first book. Most of the second book is filler - the kids bickering, traveling to the next city by bus, losing each other and finding each other again, and subtle flirtation between Chloe (the most boring person that ever had the ability to raise the dead) and her two male comrades. The only part that adds to the storyline is when Chloe finds out that she and the other kids are part of a big supernatural experiment that could end fatally for them.

Chloe spends the whole book making silly decisions based on what she thinks the others want from her. She's a serious Mary-Sue, damsel in distress type. She's not actually unlikeable because she's so nice, but she's totally useless and dull, and the boys spend the whole book falling all over themselves to try and protect her from all her stupid actions. Derek at least gets angry with her while Simon just defends everything she does and is constantly squeezing her hand and giving her reassuring looks which she desperately needs. The only person who makes any sense is Tori. She's super high maintenance and funny because she's always pointing how stupid everyone is being.

Somehow I still feel that I will end up reading the last book. Despite their length, these books are still really easy to read and engaging enough to get through quickly. I mainly just want to see where they end up and who makes out with who. However, Armstrong really would have just been better off writing one decent book instead of breaking it up into three really sub par parts.

This is so good ... and now I am waiting again!

The second part in the "Darkest Powers Trilogy" is basically a road movie. A diverse bunch of naturally supernatural - and genetically altered - kids are running for their lives, because the adults whose guinea-pigs they are, decided to end the experiment and terminate the subjects.

The book starts in the middle of the attempted flight and ends with the - temporary - end of it. But, wow what a roller coaster! Although there is danger after danger, ghost after zombie after spell duel, the story remains believable and the characters real: Bickering, bratty witch Tori, puberty-hit werewolf Derek (with acne, anger-issues, wolfish stink, excruciatingly painful and puke-enhanced half-transformations), brave, unsure and compassionate necromancer Chloe and Simon, a diabetic womanizing sorcerer.

I especially like the non-perfectness of everybody. For example, although the kids decide to call a truce and stop bitching against each other, Tori fails to keep her tongue in check. Although Chloe starts to like Derek more and more for himself as the story progresses and to appreciate her ability to talk freely of her anxieties to him, she still notices his flaws in appearance and is flattered by beautiful Simon's attentive flirtation.

Kelley Armstrong really did a wonderful thing, when she decided to go for young adult fiction. I can't wait to read "The Reckoning" next year.

Trigger warning: kidnapping and murder (Chloe sees a death echo of a teenage girl)

Is this trilogy now slightly dated as far as YA is concerned? Yes. Does this book end on a monumentally annoying cliffhanger? Yuh huh. Do I still really enjoy the characters and the world and getting to see Chloe struggle through using her powers? Definitely.

I like the changing dynamic between Chloe and Derek (although I do wish he'd stop grabbing her arm EVERY SECOND DAMN PAGE), I like how they help each other through the troublesome part of their powers. The story is pretty fast paced, and the addition of the mutts definitely adds something for readers of the Women of the Otherworld series.

As I said in my review of The Summoning, I've read this series about half a dozen times now. I read this in about three hours this afternoon. While I find it slightly hard to believe that Chloe would be able to deal with running away as well as she does, it's kind of exciting to discover the extent of her powers.

That was kind of underwhelming..

The Awakening definitely left me wanting more. I just feel like it was missing so much which is a shock to me because these book are huge.

Chloe was so annoying in this book. I wanted to stab my eyes so I didn't have to see her trying to flirt with everyone and anyone that walked. I honestly gave zero fucks about her until she found out she was apart of a experimental group thing. Honestly, I only cared a little bit - I mostly just wanted the book to be over.. or something to happen that would grab my attention.

Back to Chloe. She constantly made terrible, silly, and super stupid decision throughout the whole book. My eyes hurt from all the rolling I've done today. Derek was interesting because he called her out on her shit.. but then Simon was an annoying twat defending the ground she walked on. UGH!

Overall, I wanted this book to end. I wanted it to be either shorter and suck.. or longer and way more exiting! I got neither. I'm just disappointed in this book and I pray that the next one is a lot better.

Delivered in her trademark style, Kelley creates a world within our own where supernatural teens are nothing but science projects to be shown and used then tossed away--sometimes even killed.

Chloe's character becomes even clearer in this novel then the one preceding it, and boy is being in her head interesting. She is struggling to understand how strong she is, and is no where near the point where she can control her powers. Despite her interest in her powers, Chloe would much rather be normal again--what ever that means, as she no longer knows herself.

Although with too little romance for my taste, The Awakening is an even better read than The Summoning. There is never a slow moment in their journey or a false line in Kelley's writing. The Awakening is a perfect edge-of-your seat read with plenty of surprises. Not only is this a great YA read, but it also is fitting for adults as well.

Kelley has created a gritty, realistic world, one that Horror, Sci-fi, and Paranormal readers will love. Book II in the Darkest Powers trilogy takes us even farther into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the everyday life with riveting effect, and has a clear DO NOT ENTER sign that you will try to ignore. An amazing novel! I want the next installment now!

Again, an okay read, and I certainly sped through the pages, but I wanted so much more from these characters - they lacked complexity. It all seems a little too nice and easy, considering the life and death consequences. A bit more Nurse Ratched-like behaviour from the staff holding them captive would have improved this enormously.

I didn’t enjoy the similarities to the first book in terms of the plot. I felt like there were key plot elements being recycled.

[1.5/5 stars] I sang some praises for the first book in this series, but unfortunately this one suffered from middle book syndrome to the max. They were pretty much just running around the entire book and the main character made some really stupid decisions. I ended up finishing out the series because the first one was so good but can't say it was worth it based on what I'm wanting from books these days.

Another lovely read from Kelley Armstrong... the 2nd book continues the 'adventure' of the young people with super natural powers... The characters are lovely and I am liking Derek more and more... so far there are not many answers but hopefully this will change in the final book.

Better, even, than the Summoning. Kelley Armstrong has successfully escaped the curse of the sequel. Characters, powers, relationships all deepened. I can't wait for the story to go on...!

THERE IS NOTHING I WANT TO CHANGE ABOUT..
Derek and Chloe’s relationship...

I found many kinds of romance in books, but the one kind of romance which I really like and want to often find in books is believable romance

Romance which I can touch and feel that it is real.

I need you. I didn’t say that, of course. How could I, without it sounding weird? But I felt it, heart hammering against my ribs, and it wasn’t some romantic I can’t bear to be without you nonsense. It was something deeper, more desperate.

Chloe page. 194

Derek and Chloe’s relationship starts with love/HATE relationship. The hatred without romance involves which I truly enjoy. I love every time they fight. I enjoy their arguing so much. Their bickering in the first book is about hatred and misunderstanding, but not in the last two books They fight each other because they are worried toward each other. They both are so stubborn. It’s so, so cute.

Their relationship develops slowly throughout the series, it grows overtime just like their feelings for each other.

Chloe is there for him when he comes through his first Change. He is scared. Chloe comforts him, rubbing his shoulder, telling him it’s gonna be alright. Finally, he can survive after his first Change with having Chloe there by his side.

There is *special bond* happens between them at that time, especially for Derek who is the werewolf.

“When Liam stepped forward again, Derek's arm shot around me , a growl vibrating up from his stomach.

"Check this out," Liam said. "I think the pup's got himself a mate. Isn't that the cutest thing?
…ĦĦĦĦĦĦĦĦĦ

“Being half wolf doesn’t just make Derek a little different. Half of him is an animal ruled by instinct. There are some instincts… He cleared his throat. Derek seems very attached to you, Chloe.

I think Derek acts such a dick to everybody that because he doesn’t want to make friend with anyone. His supernatural is dangerous. He is the wolf who stays away from Pack. There is no one guide him. He is hard to control his moody emotion so that he keeps distance from the others. He acts like a jerk; it makes him seem like a bully to everyone’s eyes, even Chloe’s.

From enemies to friends, from friends to lovers. Their relationship develops slowly from friendship. Chloe are always there for Derek every time he comes though his Change, she is there to console him. Derek is also there for her whenever she needs him. He protects her from dangers. They are always there and protect each other. They help, even challenge together. They are worried towards each other. Their connection is so strong.

The thing that I can touch is Chloe’s feeling for Derek.
To Chloe, getting a boyfriend is not on the top of her priority list. Her love for Derek comes from within because it’s not about his look.

This what I wanted. This guy. This life. This me. I was never getting my old life back, and I didn’t care. I was happy. I was safe. I was right where I wanted to be.

Fast-paced and quite entertaining sequel to The Darkest Powers trilogy about Chloe and her friends - Derek, Simon and Tori on the run from the Edison Group.
The beginning was little bit slow, but then it kicked off and started to be even more enjoyable than the first book. It was also interesting to watch the friendship development between Chloe and Derek.
I'm glad that I have the last book already purchased, because I can't wait to know how it all ends.

First half of the book I wanted to kill Derek. Luckily, he literally Changed and realized his mistakes.
