الجاهلون بالتاريخ محكوم عليهم بتكراره*
و*كلما طال الليل خفنا النور و ألفنا الظلال
وحاربنا الشمس
وبأمريكا اللاتينية و بلادنا الشرق الاوسطية ستجد التاريخ يعيد نفسه بسماجة بالغة لعقود متتالية
وسؤال إجباري يقفز عندما تكتشف دوما انه يستحيل على البشر التعلم من التاريخ
هل التمرد هو فضيلة الأنسان الحقيقية؟*
تؤكد لنا الليندي بذكاء عذب من خلال أسرة رانكيلو
الريفية و أسرة"لِيال"المثقفة و أسرة" برتران" الارستقراطية :ان الحب على اختلاف أساليبه مهما كان قويا لن يكفي و ستحاصره الظلال؛و التي تهزمها شمس التكاتف

لكني احسست ان ايزابيل لم تحبه بالقدر الكافي

هي فعلا الفتاة "الحلم" التي تعتبر خسارة ان يستحوذ عليها احد.. حولتها اسرتها المتحللة التعيسة لنبع حنان مذهل يظلل على كل من يسعده الحظ بلقياها

"هذه قصّة رجل وامرأة، أحبّ كلاهما الآخر بكل جوارحه، لينجوَا بذلك من حياةٍ مبتذلة. وقد حملتُ القصة في ذاكرتي بحرصٍ كي لا يُبليها الزمن. والآن، في ليالي هذا المكان الصامتة، استطعتُ روايتها أخيرًا. لقد فعلتُ هذا من أجلهما، ومن أجل آخرين أودعوني حيواتهم قائلين: خُذي، اكتبي كي لا تمحوه الريح."
أكاد أجزم أن هذه المقدمة البسيطة التي خطّتها إيزابيل الليندي في مقدمة الرواية، هي من أعذب ما قرأت من مقدمات وإهداءات، ابتسمتُ فور قراءتها، فهي مقدمة بها من الجمال ما يجعلك تحب الكاتبة حتى وإن لم تكن قد قرأت لها مسبقًا، واعلم أنك إن وقعتَ في حب الكاتب، فستقرأ ما كتبه بدافعٍ من هذا الحب، فلا ترى من الكلمات سوى جميلها، ولا تلتفت لأيٍّ من الشوائب التي يُحتمل أن تتواجد بين السطور، ستجد نفسك تبحث فقط عن المتعة الخالصة، وتتمنى أن تبدأ الرحلة وتنهيها وأنت على نفس الحال من الحب تجاه الكاتب وما يكتبه، أو وقد ازداد حبك اكثر وأكثر . ربما يرى بعضكم في هذه الكلمات بعض المبالغة، وربما يرى البعض أن مقدمة الرواية في حد ذاتها عادية ولا تستدعي كل هذا المدح، فإن رأى بعضكم أنها هكذا، فلتعلموا أني مُحب لقلم إيزابيل الليندي، ولا تلوموا المُحب حين يكتب عن شخصٍ يحبه بشيءٍ من المبالغة.
لماذا يرتبط اسم إيزابيل الليندي دائمًا بالحب؟، وهل هذه حقيقة مشهورة عنها ومُتفق عليها أم أنني وحدي من يشعر بذلك؟. منذ اليوم الأول الذي قرأت فيه عنها وأنا لديّ انطباع أنها تكتب بُحب، ومن حديث الأصدقاء عنها في مراجعاتهم عن رواياتها المختلفة، وجدتهم يذكرون الحب كثيرًا في حديثهم، حُبٌ لا يقتصر فقط على العلاقة العاطفية بين ذكرٍ وأنثى عاشقين لبعضهما البعض، بل وحُبّ الابن لوالديه، وحب الإنسان للطبيعة وللحياة، وحب الوطن وحب الحرية، حب التجربة وحب الانطلاق، يمكنك أن تضع أي كلمة جميلة بعد كلمة حب وستجدها مذكورة بشكلٍ أو بآخر في كتابات إيزابيل الليندي، وبعيدًا عن القصة نفسها، السرد نفسه من فرط عذوبته وسلاسته يجعلك ترغب في الحبّ!، تحب ماذا؟، لا يهم والله، المهم الشعور ذاته الذي يسيطر عليك، وبعد ذلك يا سيدي حِبّ ما شئت ولو حتى مروحة السقف في غرفتك!.
قصة حب تنشأ بين اثنين التقيا صدفةً في مكانٍ معلوم، القدر اختارهم لتشتعل بينهم شرارة الحب الخالدة، كي تتأجج بداخلهم نيران العشق التي ستدفعهم مع مرور الأيام لإشعال نيران الثورة على النظام الفاسد الديكتاتوري الحاكم للبلاد. كيف ومتي سيحدث ذلك؟، هذا ما تخفيه عنّا إيزابيل من البداية سعيًا وراء النهاية، وفي المنتصف تخرج عن السياق الأساسي مرارًا وتكرارًا متيحةً لنا الفرصة لنعيش مع شخصيات الرواية كلها بلا استثناء، نتعمق في حياتهم ونسافر عبر ماضيهم لنعرفهم، وبين الماضي والحاضر تدور حكايات وحكايات، وتتوالي الصفحات وصولًا لنقطة التحول ومركز الحبكة، متمثلة في جريمة شنيعة ارتكبها النظام تجاه شعبه وتستّر عليها بطريقة لا تقل شناعة عن الجريمة ذاتها، يحدث كل ما سبق خلال جزءين من أصل ثلاثة أجزاء يشكلون الرواية، وحين نصل للجزء الثالث من الحكاية، تكون ذروة الأحداث وقمة الترقب لما هو قادم، وتتوالى الصدمات والمفاجآت عليك لتزيدك دهشة، وبدون أن تشعر تقودك إيزابيل نحو نهايةٍ محتومةٍ لا ترغب في الوصول إليها، لُتفاجأ فور وصولك لها بحزنٍ يسيطر عليك، كالعادة.
تفكر بعد النهاية في مغزى عنوان الرواية، وتدرك الذكاء الكامن في تسميتها بالحب والظلال، أما عن الحب فقد تفرّد بذاته وانفرد لنفسه بمساحته الخاصة، وأما عن الظلال فترمز للجمال الخفي الشامل للمواضيع الفرعية التي تناولتها الحكاية، ظلال الشيخوخة، ظلال السجن والاعتقال، ظلال اليأس والانتحار، ظلال الحزن، ظلال الغربة عن الوطن، وحتى الحب نفسه كان له نصيب من الظلال تعيش شخصيات الرواية كلها تحت كنفها، فتندهش من هذا المزيج العجيب الذي صاغته إيزابيل الليندي في هذا القالب الروائي، مربكةً إياك لساعاتٍ طوال بعد انتهاءك من الرحلة بينما تحاول جاهدًا أن تكتب بعض الكلمات عنها وعمًا فعلته بك، فتكتب كما كتبت، خاتمًا كلماتك باعترافك بحب عوالم إيزابيل الليندي الروائية، وحب إيزابيل شخصيًا حبًا جمّا، متمنيًا أن يطيل الله في عمرها كي تمتعنا بأكبر قدر ممكن من حكاياتها، تلك الحكايات التي لم ولن تمحوها الريح.

What to say about this. I began it yesterday evening, I finished it this afternoon. It is wonderful. Some beautuful descriptive phrases, tiny images which capture something powerful. Gatherings of water in cobbles being likened to shards of glass, the mouth of a cave in which lie horrors as of yet undiscovered likened to a groaning mouth. Simple, obvious phrases but all the more powerful for that. Everytime I read a translated novel, and sadly owing to my 'non-ployglotness' this is inevitable, i am struck by the huge talent not just of the original writer but the ability of the translator.
This novel is of oppression and fear and cruelty and love, of rejection and loyalty and deep tragedy and the amazing thing is you are swept along by the force of the narrative not by purple prose or long speeches or histrionic decalarations but by the warmth and courage and goodness of the characters.
Having said that some of the ' goodies ' are quite annoying, and the love between the hero and heroine made me feel uncomfortable. I tried to work out why; i think it is because of the rejected lover; the one cast off. He is a good and noble man who seems swept out of the story without a second thought and his sacrifice unmourned. This struck me as unworthy of two supposedly high minded 'freedom-fighters'. That, of course, probably says a lot more about me thna it does of the two lovers.
There is another gripe I would air though. It is that the villains of the piece, the oppressors and tyrants, those on the side of the devils seem drawn heavily, childishly, as if in crayon whereas the main protagonists on the angels' side are drawn carefully and fully with light and shade. Perhaps this was intentional but i do wonder whether this results in a story which fails to address issues. The story becomes very much an us and them where no real attempt is made to see any other point of view because it is presented that if you are not a fighter, slaving for the poor and the oppressed you are either senile, as the old folk in the nursing home run by Irene's mother, a blind egoist like the aforementioned mother or evil rapacious murderers like the rotten military.
This simplistic division surely does not address the struggles many would encounter in such horrendous circumstances. I realize Allende knows everything about such things and I know nothing but surely those who keep their heads down, their ' noses clean', they may not be able to be declared courageous or noble or heroic but i feel it is an injustice unworthy of a story of oppresson and discrimination to automatically dismiss them as therefore on the side of the oppressors. Fear and cruelty spur some on to betrayal and cowardce, some to nobilty and sacrfice but most presumably to paralysis and terror.
We encountered only heroes/heroines or bastards and these latter were painted in nothing but blood. I wonder if the story might have benefited from a touch of the normal; men and women who walk not on the high mountains of daring deeds and not in the subterranean passages of torture and murder but those who spend their lives dodging bullets not as they move from brave acts of sabotage to even braver acts of opposition but just those who have to dodge to move from workplace to home so as to provide for those they love in the best way they can.

my most favourite isabel allende novel; i would learn another language just for the pleasure of reading her in her native tongue. if the translation is so beautiful i can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be in spanish.
i have to explain that i review the books i have read not on their objective merit but on the ways in which they speak to me. of love and shadows weaves a love story into the middle of a frightening political situation that is disturbingly real precisely because it has been and still is a reality for nations all over the globe and most notoriously in latin america. yes, the love irene and francisco have for each other is incredible, but the intense beauty of the novel shines through in so many of the characters, differing in their motives perhaps but so real in their intricacies. allende's gift is capturing the complexity of such political and social situations without reducing them to simple dichotomies of good vs. evil. her writing is intensely beautiful and poetic, stirring the imagination as her plot lines move the soul.

Earlier this year I rediscovered the magic of Isabel Allende when I savored every page of her new book Long Petal of the Sea. A return to her roots, the book with the sparkling blue cover paid homage to her homeland, an element that had been missing from most of her recent books, that she has written while living in California. Currently, one of my book clubs is reading this new opus, and I am participating in the discussion, more as an Allende “expert� than a current reader, filling the other readers in with the gaps they may have missed by not reading her other masterful works. A spark lit in me to read more about the story that is 20th century Chile. If Long Petal of the Sea glorifies the land that Spanish refugees must have felt after arriving after the Civil War, then Of Love and Shadows uncovers the corruption and brutality of the military regime that overtook the nation three decades later. Of Love and Shadows is a classic Allende story, the tale of the Chilean citizens of all walks of life brave enough to speak up against Pinochet’s dictatorship.
Irene Beltran had no reason to denounce the current government. She grew up the only child of upper class citizens Eusebio Beltran and Beatriz Alcántara and was promised to be married to her cousin army captain Gustavo Morante from the time that they were kids. The Beltran-Alcántara home was not as blissful as an upper class existence could be, the parents always fighting and detesting each other’s presence, Beatriz living in her own reality, and the housekeeper, the indefatigable Rosa running the home. Irene grew up doted on by her father, loved and cherished by Rosa, and was a mere presence in the life of her mother. Beatriz Alcántara cheered the military regime from day one, believing that the order of the institution would put down the insurrections foisted upon Chile by the previous communist run government. Living in a mansion, Beatriz was in her own bubble, oblivious to the long lines to buy basic staples and the desaparecidos who the military had no knowledge of where they went. As long as she had her wealth and luxurious lifestyle, Beatriz would support the dictatorship. Irene had other ideas; she decided to become a journalist, opening her eyes to the atrocities going on in both Santiago and country. Beatriz, ensconced in her mansion, had no idea the depths and breaths of her daughter’s profession. She believed that her daughter was of good stock and that she would marry Gustavo Morante, furthering the family’s good name.
In her heart of hearts, Beatriz Alcántara did love her daughter to desire that she bettered herself in life, which is why she looked down upon the profession of journalism as middle class. All parents want the best for their children, especially the Leal family, who had escaped Spain in the throes of war and made a new home for themselves in Chile, which connects Of Love and Shadows to Long Petal of the Sea through a web of motifs that crop up throughout Allende’s writing. Professor Leal found a job teaching at the university, and his wife Hilda ran an impeccable home, loving her three sons from the bottom of her heart. While she had much pride in her older sons Javier and Jose, the biggest place in her heart was for her son Francisco. The two enjoyed the opposite relationship of that of Beatriz and Irene, and, while the Leal home was not opulent, it permeated with love. It was Hilda who encouraged Francisco to try his hand at photography when his psychology clinic faltered, as though she could tell in the stars what the future held for her beloved son. It is strong peripheral female characters like Hilda and Rosa who permeate Allende’s writing and set the wheels in motion for an epic story.
As fate would have it, Francisco Leal went to work at the magazine where Irene Beltran was a prominent journalist. He grew smitten with her from day one, another element to the best of Allende’s stories: forbidden romance. Irene, initially holding her emotions close to the best, requests that Francisco photograph all of her stories. After covering the story of Evangelina Ranquileo, a fifteen year old country girl who is known to have healing powers, the new couple witnesses atrocities perpetuated by the military and are determined to bring the years of terror brought on by the dictatorship to light. The fate of Ranquileo and all those associated with her as well as countless other desaparecidos, cement the relationship of Francisco and Irene. Hilda and Rosa knew it was fate from day one, and only Beatriz remained oblivious to her daughter’s true station in life. To Beatriz Alcántara, her daughter was an upper class young woman betrothed to a military officer, not a magazine reporter who, along with her true love, was determined to take down a corrupt regime.
Of Love and Shadows is not for the faint of heart. Allende, the niece of deposed Chilean President Salvador Allende, wrote this book while in exile in Caracas, Venezuela. By that point, some of the brutality and atrocities brought on the people of Chile by the Pinochet regime had been exposed by brave journalists much like Irene Beltran. Allende herself, although she had already published House of the Spirits, had worked as a journalist and did not think of herself as an established author. Much of Irene Beltran’s story is her own, even some of the romantic elements. The peripheral characters who crop up, Allende knew people like all of them. The priests, lead by Francisco’s brother Jose, who ran a network to help political dissidents to escape; the hairdresser Mario, who has a colorful personality and is Irene’s biggest ally; the retired actress Josephine Bianchi, who treated Irene like her own daughter. These characters make up the backbone of this book, although none is as brave as Irene, making me appreciate Allende as a person before she became an established writer in an even greater light. With her family pedigree and chosen profession, it is a miracle that she survived in Pinochet’s Chile until the family went into exile, thankfully so that she could write the stories of her homeland.
Of Love and Shadows is another of Allende’s books that is her bread and butter, paying homage to the people and landscape that comprise the nation of Chile. Many of the exiles who denounced the military returned to Spain, some to the United States. The Allende family first moved to Venezuela, and then to California. While Isabel became well known as a writer after living in California for many years, her gold standard stories as the ones she wrote while she still considered Chile to be her permanent home. The same themes and motifs connect the stories that tell the tale of 20th century Chile, the consequences for those who immigrated, emigrated, remained, and left. While darker than Long Petal of the Sea, Of Love and Shadows is a brave story that had to be told. It is among one of Allende’s best that she wrote while exiled with one foot still in the nation that is the long petal of the sea at the end of the world.

This is Isabel Allende's second novel. Her first, The House of Spirits, is deeply immerse in the Magic Realism style of the masters of the genre. This one, also Magic Realism, has a more urban tone, setting a style that would become prevalent later, when English-speaking writers took over the genre.
The book at its core is a love story, one plagued by shadows. The shadows of the totalitarian military regimen imposed in Chile by Augusto Pinochet.
Many fans of Allende's first book, find this one lacking in magic. I don't agree with them. It's simply a different kind of magic. The magic in this book is of a more modern type, without so much lace and horses, but with a lot of motorcycles and journalists.
There's a heavy political tint in this book, an unfiltered view of what Chile was during the Dictadura, with clean, fenced rich neighborhoods, surrounded by misery, and nothing in between. As readers we travel from one of those fancy houses to a small shack in the country where a family's younger daughter has been kidnapped, raped and buried by soldiers. Everyone knows what happened, but no one will do anything, except for Irene Beltran and Francisco Leal, a young journalist daughter of a Chilean Socialite and a young, idealist photographer son of Spanish immigrants.
They will discover a mass clandestine grave, and expose Pinochet to the world (as if the world was not just pretending not to see). In the process they will fall in love and become exiles, escaping in the shadows, trying to reach the safety of a neutral country, one that would not simply return them to the hands of the Chilean military.
In my opinion this book is as much of a master piece as The House of Spirits, but it's also much harder to read for the violence it contains, while not explicit, it's just too real. I love Allende's styles full of regionalisms and landscape, full of hope, despite the fact that as the niece of Salvador Allende, the president assassinated by Pinochet, she has lived her life in Exile, just as Irene and Francisco.

I have been reading lists that rate Ms Allende's novels & I think all of them had her debut novel as her best work & most of them had this one as number 2. I can certainly see why - as this one is also a true masterpiece, that just becomes more compelling the further you read.
Set in Chile & partly based on a true story, the magical Evangelina lives in poverty. Irene is the privileged child child of an unhappy marriage, with a brave and questing spirit. When Evangelina disappears, Irene & her admirer Francisco go on a mission to find her.
The prose is of such lyrical beauty. Even quite minor matters are described so delicately;
This makes the inevitable brutality all the more shocking. I wish I had noted down the exact quote where it says the fear of socialism lead the common people to support a dictatorship.
I have a pile of about six unread Allende's & I am now eager to get to all of them!

This was an occasion that called for the small porcelain cups from the collection in the cupboard, all different and each as delicate as a sigh.
This makes the inevitable brutality all the more shocking. I wish I had noted down the exact quote where it says the fear of socialism lead the common people to support a dictatorship.

السيدة إيزابيل تغزل ولا تكتب، منمنمات تربطها ببعضها حتى تظهر لنا الحكاية في ثوبها المتألق، لها طريقة فريدة في رسم الشخصيات وربط الأحداث.
تكتب إيزابيل عن مصائب وفواجع ولكن الأمل موجود دائما بقوة أيضا.
النساء في رواياتها قوية، شجاعة، غير مهمشة مهما كان وضعها الحقيقي.
اما هذه الرواية فهي مكثفة، متلاحقة الأحداث، زاخرة بالشخصيات المرسومة بعناية فائقة، لا يتسرب إليك الملل ولا تقفز عينك على السطور. وهي مع ذلك كله مؤلمة ألما جميلا، ولا ادري كيف يكون الألم جميلا!!!!.

Υπέροχο. Το βιβλίο "Του έρωτα και της σκιάς" είναι πραγματικά υπέροχο.
Η ατμόσφαιρα μαγική. Η Αλιέντε έχει στήσει ένα όμορφο και ρομαντικό περιβάλλον σε ένα κόσμο, ο οποίος είναι σκληρός και αποτρόπαιος, αλλά τόσο όμορφος και γεμάτος αισθήσεις που αξίζει να τον ζεις.
Η αφήγηση υπέροχη. Περιγραφές, πρωτότυπες, χωρίς τυποποιημένα και συνηθισμένα επίθετα, περιγραφές γεμάτες έμπνευση, που ζωντανεύουν τον κόσμο που έχει δημιουργήσει η Αλιέντε θεατρικά μπροστά στα μάτια του αναγνώστη.
Η πλοκή κυλάει νεράκι. Έρωτας και μυστήριο αναμιγνύονται με τις προσωπικές ιστορίες και το παρελθόν όλων των ηρώων σχεδόν, που εμφανίζονται στο βιβλίο. Όλες οι ιστορίες των ανθρώπων που γνώρισα στο βιβλίο είναι εξαιρετικές, η οικογένεια Λεάλ όμως θα μου μείνει αξέχαστη. Υπέροχο βιβλίο, πολύ πάνω από τις προσδοκίες μου!

تعبر إيزابيل الليندي عن كتاباتها قائلة: "أكتب لأتداوى"...وأنا أسير خلف كتاباتها من منطلق: "أقرأ لأتداوى"
فهي الوحيدة القادرة في كل قراءة لها على أن تخرجني من عالمي إلى عالمها، بل عوالمها التي تنسجها ببراعة فائقة تسطر فيها لحكايات تلقي عليها ظلالا من الواقعية السحرية مغلفة بالحب، وإن كانت تنسجها في جوّ بالغ القسوة
أهيئ نفسي قبل القراءة لإيزابيل لاستيعاب ذلك الكم الهائل من التفاصيل والأسماء المتشابكة فيما بينهما بخطوط متقاطعة ومتوازية...وأكتب مخططا للأسماء التي مرت بي خلال القراءة...فهكذا سأكون بكامل وعيي لاستيعاب من غاب من شخوصها عن الأحداث ليعود ثانية...والتي تمنح إيزابيل بعضها استراحة المحارب قبل أن تعود للواجهة ثانية وبقوة
وظلال إيزابيل هذه المرة...تدور أحداثها في دولة من دول أمريكا اللاتينية، وتبنيها على واقعة حقيقية حصلت في بلدة لونكين، على بعد 60 كيلو متر من العاصمة التشيلية سنتياغو، حيث تم اكتشاف مدفن سري في منجم مهجور، أخفى فيه رجال الدرك جثث خمسة عشر فلاحا من أهالي المنطقة.
تنسج إيزابيل قصة حب خلف تلك الظلال القاتمة، لتمدنا بالأمل، وتؤكد على المشاعر الإنسانية الراقية التي لا يزلزلها ظلم، ولا تمحو وجودها تعقيدات الواقع
فلا تنسى إيزابيل وهي تتحدث عن الحرية والعدالة، أن تذكرنا بإنسانيتنا، وما جبلنا عليه من خير وحب مقابل الشر الذي قد يصل ببعض البشر إلى التفوق على الشيطان بنفسه
الحكاية الرئيسة في الرواية تدور حول الصحفية أيرين التي تعمل في مجلة نسائية، وتلتقي بفرانثيسكو الطبيب النفسي الذي ترك مجال تخصصه بحثا عن مصدر دخل أوفر، أيرين وفرانثيسكو يعملان ��عا في عدة تحقيقات صحفية، ليجدا نفسيهما في مواجهة قصة غريبة لفتاة لها قدرات سحريّة، ويتورطان في البحث عنها بعدما فقد أثرها بعد اعتقالها للتحقيق معها في مركز للشرطة...ليكشفا عن الكثير من الفساد العسكري من خلال تلك الحادثة

وكما قلت سابقا في أغلب مراجعاتي لروايات إيزابيل...أنها تحب المرأة القوية الباحثة عن مكان لها ودور في المجتمع، وكأنها تبعث فيها شيئا من شخصيتها، وتظهر في كل رواية وشخصية جزءا من حقيقتها...على الرغم من تنوع شخصياتها النسائية في كل رواية من رواياتها
هي قصة من الممكن أن تحدث في أي مكان من العالم، ولا نستثني منها عالمنا العربي، الذي يغص بمثل تلك الحكايات...والتي رغم ألمها تمدنا بالحياة
تقول إيزابيل:
“ل� أعتقد أننا نحيا على ظهر هذا الكوكب لكي نكون سعداء. إن المرء لا يتعلم شيئا وهو سعيد. الألم وحده يمدنا بالوجود الحقيقي، الذي يساعدنا على النمو وتفهم الأشخاص وكيف تجري الأمور في هذا العالم. لو كان المرء سعيدا طيلة حياته فلن يعيش سوى في عالم واحد ولن يحقق أي تقدم."
رواية مؤثرة مليئة بالأحداث والتشويق، تكاد تقترب في بعض أجزائها من الروايات البوليسية...مغلفة بالكثير من الألم والظلم والقسوة والديكتاتورية، وكذلك بالحب والبحث عن الحريّة...والترجمة للرائع المبدع صالح علماني الغني عن التعريف
ذهبت نجمة للغموض الذي اكتنف بعض الأحداث مثل حياة فرانثيسكو السريّة والتي لم يظهر الجانب الواضح منها إلا في نهاية الرواية، وللنهايات المفتوحة لبعض الحكايات في الرواية...وكانت ستختفي نجمة لعدم توافق أفكاري مع أفكارها، ولكنني توقفت في اللحظات الأخيرة، فلن أحاكم أفكارها التي نبعت من أيدولوجية مختلفة، وأنا أعيها تماما.

This was soo bad! A couple of times I thought, why is this written in this way and what does it add to the story, it was gross and handeld sensitive topics with not enough care, like incest, rape, ...

Sufro porque no puedo leer lo que quiero. Sufro porque me da culpa leer por placer. Este libro me lo prestó la vecina, pensando que yo tendría "tiempo". No lo tuve. Pero lo busqué, me lo leí, y lo terminé.
Felizmente no es nada de lo que pensé que sería. Con una narración que al principio me pareció enredada, y una historia que me dio la sensación de que iba más atrás que para adelante, creo que lo entendí.
Hace una reconstrucción completa de cada personaje que aparece en esta historia. No se deja nada afuera. Luego del problema de Evangelina es cuando la historia coge un poco de acción y se siente que avanza.
Es interesante cómo intercala las voces de cada personaje, presente y ausente, los recuerdos y los deseos, para entramar ese contexto que duele, que sulfura odio y que parece matar el amor.
Irene me costó entenderla. Se nos aparece muy de pronto, con una ingenuidad que roza la estupidez, una inocencia que no parece creíble en contexto, pero que en el momento que su cabeza hace clic cambia completamente.
Hay personas detestables y personajes entrañables. Penas y alegrías.
Lamento mucho la suerte de Gustavo (prometido de Irene). No parece mala persona y su único error fue dar por sentado su relación. Me dio mucha pena.
En fin, es recomendable, si se tiene paciencia, ningún apuro y un poco de curiosidad. No sabía que tenía película. Debo verla algún día.

October 18, 2023Allende’s second novel after The House of the Spirits centers around a journalist, Irene, and photographer, Francisco, who uncover a mass grave of los desaparecidos (the disappeared) in an abandoned mine in an unnamed Latin American country. But it is much more than just this story, there are the richly characterized stories of the people who are part of this story. I’ve never read anything so richly described that had me reading more. I was brought in to the story and felt I knew the inner workings of all the characters. This novel is also a mystery of who would believe the story of these los desaparecidos and how the truth would come out in such a totalitarian regime. Our heroes face numerous challenges and close calls, and the reader hopes all will be well in the end. Suspenseful with captivating characters, I highly recommend this read.--Sara H.

Hace unos meses, cuando leí este libro, me encontré con algunas frases que, de cierta manera, me recordaron a la situación que se vive en Venezuela, así que aquí van:
El Cabo tenía razón y con el transcurso de los días y las semanas les sería mucho más fácil matar por la patria que morir por ella.
Justicia era solo un término olvidado del lenguaje que ya casi no se empleaba, porque tenía visos subversivos, como la palabra libertad.
Esos crímenes no podían quedar impunes, porque entonces la sociedad se iba al diablo y no tendría sentido haber tomado las armas para derrocar al gobierno anterior acusándolo de ilegalidad, si ellos mismos ejercían el poder fuera de toda ley y moral.
Había perdido sus ilusiones, convencido de que la dictadura no era una etapa provisoria del desarrollo, sino la etapa final en el camino de la injusticia.

Nothing I wasn't expecting.
I must confess, though, it annoyed me the similarity to The House of Spirits. Isabel Allende's style is predictible, she tries to 'hook' you, to pull you in the story. I don't know about others, but she just couldn't do it with me. :) I was permanently noticing her style, habit of describing everything to the little detail [annoying and useless, if you ask me], reducing to characters to one, two presentations that say no-thing!-it just puts them in category-bleah!; then, she lets them grow, and they grow teribly in this one:D. Of course the main characters are good-looking, hot and have that attractive South-American beauty; of course they are interested in politics and fight for freedom and democracy with the cost of their lives. rrrright. I think Allende has 'a thing' for politics in the country-again, the name isn't mentioned-better this way..
Oh, and the action is so fast, things happen, minor habits are all described, usual 'picture in picture' techinque. blahblah, that pisses me off.
I don't think I want to read anything else written by her.

I have to admit I occasionally tend to judge book by it's cover. Not in metaphorical sense, although I been guilty of that as well, so I been avoid Isabel Allende books because cover looks the same like cheap love novels and it doesn't help that here they have the same publisher so mentally I put them in the same basket and never gave them much though. Until I got 3 of them as a gift from my sister who has been reliable source for recommendations so I gave Of love and shadow a chance and I had to admit I was completely wrong.
This is a story about living under a dictatorship, harsh economic conditions, censorship and yes about love too. It's one of the themes but not just love romantic love but love for family and friends too.

هذه الرواية هي أشبه بتذكرة عودة الى تشيلي بينوشيه حيث تنقل لنا ايزابيل الليندي قصة ثلاث عائلات هي آل ليال ,آل رانكليو و آل بلتران , تنتمي كل منها الى طبقة اجتماعية مختلفة ويتقاطع مصيرها بتقاطع مصير أبنائها ابان فترة الحكم العسكري...
ولأن الحكم بالحديد والنار عادة ما يلقي بظله على كل تفاصيل الحياة نجد الظلال تغلب على معظم الأحداث , لولا شيء من النور الذي يتسرب الى الواقع من خلال المشاعر الانسانية السامية كالحب مثلا...
و أمام الزوابع التي تعصف بالمجتمع التشيلي حيث الفقر ,الاختفاء القسري و التصفية الجسدية, نجد رابطا غريبا ينشأ بين أيرين بلتران الصحفية في احدى المجلات النسائية وأرستقراطية المنشأ و فرانشيسكو ليال (ابن عائلة اسبانية هربت من دكتاتور آخر هو فرانكو) الذي عمل كطبيب نفسي قبل أن يجبر على الاعتماد على هواية التصويرالفوتوغرافي لكسب العيش, فيصبح بذلك رفيقا لأيرين بعد حصوله على وظيفة في المجلة نفسها. تتطور بعد ذلك الأحداث و تتشابك الخيوط ليسوقهما القدر الى بلدة لونكين حيث الواقعة الحقيقية ل"اكتشاف" في أحد المناجم المهجورة ...حدث سيكون بمثابة نقطة اللاعودة في حياة كليهما.
و اذا ما أضفنا بياتريس ,أم أيرين المهووسة بجمالها و الحريصة على ان تظهر دائما بمظهر نموذج لسيدات الطبقة الراقية حتى و ان اضطرها ذلك الى استغلال من هم في أرذل العمر ,نجد انفسنا أمام ثلاث أمثلة من المواطنين : أولئك الذين يعلمون ما يجري سواء اختاروا المواجهة كفرانشيسكو الذي كان يساعد المعدمين في الأحياء الفقيرة من خلال الاستشارات النفسية و الملاحقين على الهرب خارج البلاد, أو الذين آثروا السلامة كبعض الشخصيات الأخرى
أولئك الذين يجهلون حقيقة ما يجري مثل ايرين التي كانت تعيش "محمية بجهل ملائكي". و طبعا أولئك الذين يصرون على النكران و يرون في السلطة الخير المطلق مثل بياتريس...
لن أتطرق كثيرا للأحداث و لكنني سأتوقف عند نقاط ثلاث

لم تستطع حملة العداء ، ولا زَجْ الرهبان والراهبات فى المعتقلات ، ولاتحذيرات روما ، أنْ تحرفه عن أهدافه ، فقد ألقى زعيم الكنيسة على كاهله مسئولية الدفاع عن ضحايا النظام الجديد ، واضعًا مؤسسته المهيبة فى خدمة المُطاردين ، فإذا ما اشتدّتْ المخاطر، غيّر من استراتيجيته ، مستندًا إلى ألفىْ سنة من الدهاء ومن معرفة السلطة. وبهذا كان يحول دون مواجهة مفتوحة بين ممثلى يسوع وممثلى الجنرال . ولكنه لم ينحرف ولو قليلا عن مهمته فى رعاية الأرامل والأيتام

انهم يتهمون هذا الملازم المسكين بالقتل يا روسا,لا احد يفكر في انه ساعدنا على التخلص من الشيوعية

جميلة هي إيزابيل الليندي، وجميل هو كل ما تكتبه. تأسرني رواياتها وتأخذني إلى عالم النساء القويات المناضلات في وجه التسلط الذكوري أيّاً كان شكله.
في هذه الحكاية، كانت بطلتنا إيرين بيلتران الصحفية الشابة وصديقها فرانسيثكو ليال، اللذين يحاولان كشف لغز مقبرة جماعية، حيث قامت قوات الدرك بقتل الناس وإخفائهم في إحدى المناجم، كل ذلك خلال فترة الحكم العسكري في تشيلي.

السرد هنا سلس جدًا والشخصيات مبنية بدقة عالية جدًا ❤️
وكعادة الست إيزابيل فهى تأخذ مادة روايتها من أحداث حقيقة من تاريخ تشيلي، وهذه الرواية مبنية على حادثة وقعت في عام 1979 في بلدة لونكين، على بعد 60 كيلومترًا من العاصمة التشيلية سنتياغو، تم اكتشاف مدفن سري في منجم مهجور، أخفى فيه رجال الشرطة جثث خمسة عشر فلاحًا من أهالي المنطقة. وقد اكتشف ذلك شاب وفتاة، ووقعوا في حب بعضهم البعض، وهذا الحدث سيغير حياتهم تمامًا، فكيف سيكون ذلك؟!

Of Love and Shadows is the second novel by Latin American writer Isabel Allende and written after her international best-selling debut novel The House of Spirits, admittedly a tough act to follow. But this book takes us once again on the tumultuous world stage in an undisclosed Latin American country under the control of a military dictatorship where one of the central themes is the plight of the desaparecidos. Irene Beltran, born of the upper class and working as a journalist, and her photographer, Francisco Leal, the youngest son of exiles from Spain as well as covert worker in the resistance. This young couple fall desperately in love as they investigate a missing person story stumbling upon a far deeper crime reaching high into the government with dire consequences.
Another overarching theme is that of immigration and the plight of those who have been uprooted and must make their way in a foreign country. It is brought out so eloquently in the words of the beloved Chilean poet and diplomat winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1971.
This was another beautiful book by Isabel Allende, one of my favorite Latin American authors. And this did not disappoint with its wide array of characters and a riveting historical perspective that kept me turning the pages.
"She had become the wife of a 'desaparecido' . . . When she saw the distraught women marching every Thursday in the plaza with portraits of their relatives pinned to their bosoms, she had said they were in the pay of Moscow. She never imagined she would find herself in the same situation as those wives and mothers searching for their loved ones."
Another overarching theme is that of immigration and the plight of those who have been uprooted and must make their way in a foreign country. It is brought out so eloquently in the words of the beloved Chilean poet and diplomat winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1971.

September 29, 2023Bu kitaba puan vermeyi çok uygun görmüyorum çünkü biraz talihsiz bir tanışma yaşadık Allende ile. Ben bu kitabın üçte birini tükçe baskısından, kalanını ise ingilizce çevirisinden okudum. Normalde bu durum çok tercih ettiğim bir şey değil ancak bazen kaçınılmaz oluyor. Zaten bu durum doğal olarak kitapla bağ kurmamı zorlaştırdı ve aldığım keyfi de düşürdü. Ancak Isabel Allende’nin bu kitapta yaptığı şey o kadar kıymetli ki hakkında bir iki şey söylemeden geçemedim.
Çünkü kitap çok güçlü bir toplumsal ve politik eleştirinin üzerine kurulmuş etkileyici bir aşk hikayesi. Bu kavramlar hele ki bahsi geçen dönem Pinochet’nin Şili’si iken asla bir araya gelemez gibi geliyor. Lakin aşk belki de tam da en zorlu zamanlarında insan gerçekten büyüyüp, kendini bulduğunda gerçek anlamıyla tamamlanıyordur, bilemiyorum. Kitaba geri dönecek olursak, insanların adeta cehennemi yaşadıkları bir ülkede ailesinin imkanları ve çabası sayesinde kendi korunaklı dünyasında yaşamış, hiç incinmemiş, bu yüzden de gözündeki gülümsemesi hiç sönmemiş bir kadının; Franco İspanya’sından Şili’ye sürgün olan bir ailenin en küçük oğluyla karşılaşmasının ardından rejimin gerçek dünyasına uyanmasını temel alıyor. Şili tarihine dair bir fikriniz olmasa dahi kitapta ilerledikçe Irene ile birlikte siz de diktatörlüğün karanlığıyla yüz yüze geliyorsunuz. Allende bütün o yozlaşmış sistemi, keyfi yönetimi ve aslında var olmayan hukuk sistemini okuruna bütün gerçekliğiyle anlatıyor. Ho scelto questo libro perché volevo leggere un romanzo leggero, che scorresse veloce, quasi per riposare il cervello dall'ultimo archeo-thriller letto, mi aspettavo quindi la classica storia d'amore e invece no, questo libro, scritto comunque in maniera semplice e scorrevole, è tutto tranne che leggero....c'è amore si, amore tra i vari protagonisti ma sopratutto amore per i propri ideali.....e c'è ombra, tanta ombra, la dittatura, i desaparecidos. La Allende ancora una volta non mi ha deluso 😁

I will make this review very short and sweet. If you are a fan of Ms. Allende, and love characters as I do, I have little doubt you will be disappointed with her "Of love And Shadows."
There might not be as many great characters as in previous novels that I have read by this extremely talented writer, but there are enough to satisfy a 'character driven fanatic like myself.'
The name of the country in the story is never mentioned, other than it is a South American country that is run by a military dictatorship that has run amok with power, after overthrowing a democratically elected socialist government. The atrocities remind me of the atrocities discovered in
in El Salvador during the 1980's.
The two main characters, Irene Beltran, a disheveled but beautiful journalist working for a magazine, and Francisco Leal, a psychologist turned photographer, form an investigative partnership that uncover the dark, horrific acts of the police and government, and in turn, become a target of those police and government.
Their partnership slowly turns into a romance, and the story turns into a suspenseful thriller that leaves one guessing to the end.
Unlike all her other novels I have read, the Catholic Church nor the U.S. government are involved in any of the nefarious activities that take place.

تتميز هذه الرواية بالواقعية الساحرة
بكم هائل من الألم و العذاب و المآسي التي تحدثت عنها الكاتبة بأسلوب سلسل دون مبالغة حد الإمتقاع و لا سطحية ممزوجة بنفحة من امل الكاذب.
الفصل الثالث "الوطن العذب" ذكرني بأيام الإنتفاضة او الثورة في تونس : عدد الموتى يتضاعف و الهيجان في الشارع و أغلبية الشعب ثائر و غاضب و الإعلام ينقل لنا الاغاني الخالدة و الافلام الوثائقية التي تصف و تروي جمال تونس.
يبدو انه كما قال ليو تولستوي "العائلات السعيدة تتشابه".
قياسا النظام الديكتاتوري متشابه الملامح.
