Lady of Skye

Rate this book
Dr. Reilly Stanton, eighth Marquis of Stillworth, must mend his injured pride by proving himself a hero -- and not a drunken wastrel, as his former fiance claimed. Against all sane advice, the Londoner takes a medical post in a tiny fishing village on the remote Isle of Skye -- and is convinced that he can cope with the primitive conditions, horrendous Highland weather, and rampant illness. But Miss Brenna Donnegal is another matter entirely.... Try as he might, Reilly cannot ignore the toweringly tall lady with flaming chestnut locks and an equally fiery will. She has filled her father's former role as the local physician, and is more than annoyed to find the urbane Dr. Stanton taking over her work and her father's cottage. By fair means or foul, she will give the usurper his comeuppance. But what begins as a sparking tug-of-war between two proud hearts soon flames to a passionate fire... Critically acclaimed author Patricia Cabot delivers an exquisitely warm and witty novel of love set against the dramatic backdrop of Scotland's magnificent Isle of Skye.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! This is officially my first "real" romance novel - I don't think Mills & Boon or Francine Rivers really count. I thought I'd give Meg Cabot's older novels a try as I've found her newer stuff to be really hit or miss, and, hey, I had some spare BookMooch points.
I liked the fact that the two main characters were very unique - the man wasn't a jerkish, alpha male, and was actually rather gentlemanly. The woman had hobbies and interests, and wasn't a typical beauty. There were realistic, fleshed out minor characters who didn't disappear once they'd served their purpose in introducing the main characters to each other. There was even a sub-plot, involving cholera!
And yes, in some places it was predictable, and Cabot made some major errors which a proof-reader should have picked up on - she used both "trousers" and "pants", and "nappies" and "diapers," and at one point referred to a character as "The most beautiful woman in England" or something to that affect, when any numpty could tell me that they were on the Isle of Skye which is DEFINITELY in Scotland, which is NOT part of England - it is part of Britain. Also: no Englishman would refer to a kilt as a "skirt" and haggis is a poor man's meal; not something an Earl would feed posh guests.
However, these are minor errors which didn't really spoil the book for me. 'Lady of Skye' was great escapism and as I'm a true romantic at heart, I'll be on the look out for similarly fun and unique looking romances in the future. 8/10

Ripped Bodice 2020 Bingo: Set on an Island

“It was okay. I read this very slowly and there was nothing terribly wrong, but yeah, it was written in 2001 and it’s not what turned out to be Meg Cabot’s niche and I already forgot so much.

Dikasih buku ini sama Nana...

SUKA! SUKA! SUKA! Saya termasuk jarang banget baca hisrom, meski koleksi hisrom & harlequin milik Ibu ngga kalah banyak dengan koleksi novel detektif milik saya.

Sindiran2 cerdas atas kehidupan bangsawan, deskripsi setting, semua-semuanya sukaaa... Hisrom yang berbobot dan sangat humanis.

Thank you, Nana atas bukunya.. :D

The best thing about this book was the setting by far. The Scottish Highlands are always such an interesting and magical place to set the plot of a story in, and the descriptions did a great job of making the coastal village seem real. The male lead kind of sucked, and I don’t think he deserved the girl boss that is Brenna.

Nota 4!

Let me preface this by saying that my taste in romance novels is sometimes kind of garbage. I am very aware that Lady of Skye is not a great historical romance, but I rather enjoyed it anyway. The awesome thing about historical romance is that, as long as it’s not massively offensive, bad ones can be just as much fun as good ones.

Cabot’s style really starts to shine through here. There’s a bit more humor, and there’s some delightful trope flipping. As Cabot stops trying to write romances like old guard romance authors would have, they’re improving. Dr. Reilly Stanton is another hero who doesn’t fall into the typical alpha male thing, though he is very strong and tall and blah blah blah. He’s a doctor, and he wants to help people, and he’s kind of an idiotic goofball. He finds himself wondering if Brenna’s a vampire when he sees her in the cemetery at night, because that’s the sort of fantastical oddball he is. Meanwhile, Brenna’s basically a doctor, if women were allowed to be doctors, and she’s sturdy and steadfast and stands the fuck up for herself.

There’s a love triangle of sorts, and I actually even like how that plays out…mostly. The local lord on the isle wants to marry Brenna but she keeps turning him down. He tells Reilly to stay away, and Reilly agrees, but then obviously Reilly doesn’t. Brenna’s super concerned that the Earl will kill him, but actually they’re just bros, and that’s pretty awesome. The Earl’s romance, however, was super icky.

The book’s overly long for sure. It could have been a lot stronger with a hundred less pages. There’s a lot that’s hard to believe about the set up too. And, this book has absolutely the worst sex scene I’ve ever encountered. There was a funny one in A Little Scandal, but I literally cackled for like five minutes when I read this one. I’m linking the scene in question, but there are more hilarious bits if you open up twitter and read the thread.

Lady of Skye was totally worth my time, if only for those ridiculous sex scenes. Such comedy has ne’er been seen. It also does some nice trope flippy stuff, but you’re better off reading Tessa Dare tbh.

Finally! An author who can actually write Scottish dialect without going over the top and butchering the language!

Brenna (the heroine) is a strong, confident women, who lives by herself (shocking!), and is trying to prove her father's theory that miasma's of disease don't exist. I love when books have strong female leads, instead of simpering ninny's. The book instantly becomes 10x better.

Reilly (the hero) is a gentleman who has moved from London to the Isle of Skye. Whereas most of the other men that he knows don't give a rat's ass about how they treat their women, Reilly is a gentleman, through and through. It helps that he sounds really ruggedly handsome.

One thing I didn't get about this book was how Reilly understood everyone - Scots can be quite broad. I've lived in the North East all my life and we're hard enough to understand as it is. The West is even worse and quite a lot of them speak Gaelic - which I don't understand at all. Imagine how much broader it would have been in 1847 (when the book was set). My mum's family is from London and she always has to translate for them whenever they come to visit.

There were some little errors where she called things by the American name instead of the English name ('diapers' instead of 'nappies'; 'sweater' instead of 'jumper'; 'pants' instead of 'trousers'. That sort of thing). But, overall, it wasn't that bad.

I also quite liked Lord Glendenning's character. Even though he's a womaniser, he cares about his people and seems to be a nice person. Also, he's quite funny when he's drunk.

It took me so long long to finish this read I can only assume that either I'm no longer the voracious historical romance reader I used to be or this book is just really not that good. And it is such a shame because I got myself an amazing hardcover first-edition in a secondhand bookstore believing I'd found a literary treasure. Poor me.

📚#5 in My Meg Cabot Read Through
I've reached the fifth book in my Meg Cabot readathon. Once again, it took me longer than expected to read, though in this case it was mostly my fault. [It's been a month.] Lady of Skye really feels like a Meg Cabot novel. Here I can tell that Meg is starting to find her voice and not just following the typical historical romance formula. My biggest issue is that I think the book is about fifty to a hundred pages too long. While the first three hundred pages felt like a breeze, the pacing afterwards started to feel so slow. It could've been improved upon with less pages imo.

The book is set in 1847 in the fictional village of Lyming on the not fictional island of Skye in Scotland. The female lead, Brenna Donnegal, is a nineteen going-on twenty-year-old young woman who wears pants, has medical knowledge, and truly cares about the people of Lyming. She is serving as the village's sort-of doctor until Dr. Reilly Stanton arrives. He's a thirty-year-old marquis who'd rather be addressed as "Dr." than "Lord," and has a strong moral compass. As a bonus, he's only the tiniest bit rake-ish [which all of Meg's male leads have been so far]. Their romance feels very natural, though I will say that the consummation of it happens a tad fast. And aside from the misunderstanding near the end, I really happen with the romance aspect over all.

Lady of Skye also deals with a real life topic of the time, which is cholera. At the time, the medical community still held some misbeliefs about how the disease was spread. Brenna, continuing the work of father, attempts to discern the real reason on how cholera is spread. This aspect of the story was intriguing, but I thought that it bogged down the plot towards the end. An interesting thing to note is that this is the first instance of one of Meg's heroines having a "cause" for lack of better word. All of Meg's heroines have so far been forward thinking, but Brenna is the first to have a steadfast belief and is actively working towards fixing it. Anyway, since I've read a lot of Meg's later books, I though that was an interesting thing I noticed.

I really enjoyed Lady of Skye and I'm hoping that February is a better reading month for me, but I'm currently sick so... who knows? On to Educating Caroline!

I think out of all the historical romances I've read by Meg Cabot, this is probably my favorite. I liked the characters a lot more (I used to think Drake was my favorite, but I like Reilly a lot more!) and I think the character development and progression of the relationship between the two leads was much better written here. I think in general Meg Cabot tends to write her historical romance heroines as very independent and progressive and I think this was really highlighted in Brenna's character, who is 100% devoted to her career and research aspirations. I also really enjoyed the fact that the novel was centered around medicine and public health :).

*Also, this might just be me reading too much into things but I did think there was a very Beatrice (MABN) moment when Brenna had her "If I were a man" outburst in chapter 17!

Bagaimana akhir kisah cinta terlarang mereka?

I’m conflicted about this one. I’ve always enjoyed Patricia Cabot’s historical romance novels. Her writing is superb and she doesn’t typically follow the typical bodice ripper/historical romance style. I think “Lady of Skye fell short for me because the pacing felt odd. It felt as though we missed some scenes between the love interests that were vital to the progression of the story. It was almost like a slow burn that fell just short. Anyway, I really enjoyed the premise of the story. Isolated island/genteel doctor/independent woman. 3.5 stars.

Roughly the last of my December comfort reads but finished today. This had all the ingredients for something I'd like and there were some good characters, humor, and some nice set pieces but ultimately it didn't come together (lots of weird plot stuff that felt unmotivated or as if it came out of nowhere or ended up nowhere for example I'm unclear on why anyone's rank in the aristocracy actually mattered either as a conflict or a solution).

Dr. Reilly Stanton is the 8th Marquis of Stillworth who accepts a physician position in Skye where he meets the strange but beautiful Miss Brenna Donnegal. He took the job to show his possible ex-fiancée that he was not just a loser. At the same time, Miss Brenna is being pursued by the local Earl and wants the doctor to declare her insane so that he could marry her. This sounds so incredibly sus. For half of the book, I didn’t see how the two had any interest in each other. And then they added a piano scene and a singing scene, and somehow that’s where they kiss passionately.

It was very well written and I liked both the characters. They were strong in their own ways and stood up for what’s right. It felt like a good old classic romance.

The story is ok and the book is easy to read, but the characters aren't in any way deep or too believable. The writing style is quite redundant and confusing - the way she explains thoughts mid sentences throughout the entire book can get, in my personal opinion of someone who reads a lot of books and is trying to exemplify it right now, quite annoying. I'll give it 2,5 stars.

This book was so much fun. Cabot has such a delicious way with humor. This story was funny, sweet, sexy, romantic, with a delightful cast of characters. Reilly and Brenna were a swoony lovestruck couple, while the Byronic earl filled out the part of romantic rival as perfectly as he did his kilt. With “Educating Caroline and now, “Lady of Skye Patricia/Meg Cabot has staked her position as my new favorite author.

I do like Meg Cabot as a genre writer, she's even better here than she was writing her most famous YA series. She's respectful of historical accuracy and I like that the "romance" here is a secondary thing, it's a lot more about what is happening in the town than just it's main characters.

For the most part I enjoyed this book but I felt like it took me way longer to read than it should have. It didn't hold my interest as tightly as I expected. The setting was fascinating, the characters likeable and I enjoyed the historical medical information and yet, only 3 stars.

An old favourite. This must be the 5th re-reading. I did find the meandering inner dialogue of the characters a little boring - slowed down the pace of the story (although what historical romance had pace? 😂).

Meg Cabot's adult novels are not as good as teenage novels.

Kind of historical, kind of out of place, all bad.
