Jun'ichirō Tanizaki

Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society.
Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative.

Tanizaki's main theme always seems to psychoanalyze his characters' sexual drive in every book. Sometimes it's more subdued, in The Key though it is front and center and the main point. The book follows a husband and wife, with alternating diary entries between the two. Their love life is the focus and it's clear that while they are writing this for themselves, they are also actively writing it for each other in the hopes that the other is reading (the husband literally states this in his first entry).
We get a brief history of their lives together, but the focus is on their current lives. The husband is looking for a way to excite his wife who he finds cold. The wife in contrast more than implies that it was an arranged marriage and that while she loves him in a way, she also hates him. In regards to the full plot I will say no more. This is one the reader should experience going in blind, and all that I've said thus far is pretty much outright stated within the first two or three diary entries.
This dynamic and shifting points of view makes for an uncomfortable book, but also one where the reader needs to read between the lines. You need to separate the truth from the lies. Figure out what is being written just to accommodate or infuriate the other partner in the relationship. It's short (my copy is only around 160 pages) but one you should take your time with if you want to get the full experience from it.
While never overly explicit, it should be noted that readers uncomfortable with erotic aspects in their novels may way want to avoid this one. Every page is really about sexuality to a degree, it's literally in every line. Like many of Tanizaki's works, it's the focus, but even more so here. There's not even a side-plot to use it as a metaphor, it is the plot here.

This book was, ironically, one of the only classics I manages to find in a collection of popular/mainstream literature. I stopped wondering why after ten pages. It is short nd concise and very hot and perverse, and you even have the excuse that it is classical Japanese literature--what's not to love?
Fortunately, it is also much, much more than cheap eroticism. Indeed, to read it as an exciting bedside reading is to miss the point entirely. It is rather a psychological novel, based on the partial understanding of a husband and wife who try to explore each other's feelings in order to better manipulate the other. Of course, when I say "feelings", do not understand that this is some sort of emotional introspection where husband and wife try to get into each other's head and finally learn about mutual rspect. This is not about emotions at all (nor respect, for that matter), this is about sex, and manipulation. But who said that sex was less complex than emotions?
I guess the best thing about this book is its absence of coyness or inhibitions when it comes to sexuality. All the traps authors usually fall in are avoided: it is never gratuitously obscene nor uselessly bashful, and it never brings morality in when it would be beside the point. This allows the author to write an extremely dense and precise account of the psychological game the couple is playing. The style is perfectly appropriate to the story, being never too introspective nor too impersonal, and the length is perfect: everything is said in few words, there is not a page that has no utility for the whole.
So please, if you are going to pick up this book, do try to take it seriously, as literature. That is the best way I know to be excited bout a novel.

Aaaargh....okay, so I LOVE Japanese literature, and Tanizaki is undoubtedly one of the most important modern Japanese writers, but this particular novella was tedious to the max. The whole story is told in diary entries, alternating between the confessions of a 56-year-old university professor and those of his wife who is ten years younger. The title-giving key refers to the compartment where the prof keeps his diary, but don't be fooled: Both want their spouse to read their entries, it's their cheeky form of communicating sexual desires and insecrurities. The wife is somehow both insatiable and timid, while the husband can't satisfy her, and when the couple aims to marry their daughter off to a teacher, the guy is turned into a factor in their sex lives.
The story is about the communicatiion of desire, (self-)deception, and projection, but it never gains momentum. Granted, this was probably a shocker in Japan in 1956, but today, it feels stilted and draws its importance mainly from historic relevancy.

I stopped reading this awhile ago because I was repelled by the characters and their deviant behaviours - repulsive basically. An older husband wants to rekindle his sexual passion for his wife and at the same time, realises he is failing to satisfy her. On New Year's day he decides to write openly in his diary about their sexual problems, with the caveat that his wife will secretly read his diary and understand what he desires. He explains that she is too shy and old-fashioned to be able to discuss these details with him in person.
I'm glad I picked up this book and read to the end because although my attitude to the characters and plot has shifted only slightly from my initial one of repulsion, I now deeply admire Tanizaki for his astounding ability to so elegantly tell this complicated and subtle tale of how husband and wife communicate with each other through their respective diaries. Even more remarkable, however, is Tanizaki's control of the narrative to indicate how they both hold back on revealing their inner-most secrets. He also shows how in the process of writing, Ikuko has come to a clearer self-awareness. In the last third of the novel the entries are exclusively from Ikuko and it is here that she writes of her own self-deception. (Don't worry feminists - the husband also is subjected to improved self-awareness.)

For me this is remarkable writing. The structure of the story seems simple enough; husband and wife both keeping 'secret' diaries - the entries alternate - with just the date as a header but it is easy enough to understand who is speaking/writing. Both know they are reading each other's entries.
There is also a sort of hovering moral structure - it is inevitable that the pleasures they both seek will eventually be punished in some way - and the warning comes with the husband's rather sudden decline into severe ill health.
In addition to the two main characters - husband and wife, there are the supporting characters, the daughter Toshiko - who has inserted herself into the sexual shenanigans of her parents - sounds revolting, yes? I suspected she was manipulating both parents, quite early on, because of the fourth character - Kimura - a handsome young man - 'like a Hollywood actor'. Kimura is initially the suitor for Toshiko, approved and invited into the family by her father, however...
In addition to the story there is of course all the details of an upper-middle class family living in Kyoto, Japan - I'm guessing the mid 50s, because of how Ikuko experiments with western clothes, the crotchet white gloves and pearl earrings. In the process of following the two diaries we hear so much about the family's eating habits and their day-to-day life. For me, it was fascinating.
Here's a little extract from when Ikuko starts to falsify her diary in order to push her husband into the extremes of sexual jealousy.
Luckily, as my doctor once told me, I have a strong stomach. He said people with chest trouble usually get thin: it was amazing I didn't lose my appetite. What worries me most is that my chest often aches quite severely, and by afternoon I feel exhausted. (To resist that feeling I press all the closer to Kimura=san. I can't over-come it without him.) Before, my chest didn't ache so badly , and I didn't feel such fatigue. Perhaps I am gradually getting worse - I can't believe that this is only a trivial matter. Besides I've done everything to ruin my health. They say drinking aggravates this illness; if that's so, it'll be a miracle if I recover . . .
Anyway - no more. The pleasure of this book lies in watching all the lies and deceits unravel in the most splendid way and the last part of the book, written by Ikuko can only lead the reader into thinking that Ikuko herself, has been deceived. A puzzle box, revealing one layer after another.
Final comments - Tanizaki's story discloses a great deal about the very formal nature of Japanese society. The Key was first published in 1956 and is an observation on how a traditional system of arranged marriages no longer satisfies either partner. The infiltration of Western values especially in relation to marriage, love and sexual compatability, creates disturbing, even pathological new behaviours in Japanese society. The Key, I think represents the need to unlock, to examine these processes as Japan struggled to merge old with new in the post Second WW era.

This is my favorite Tanizaki book.
Tanizaki is a master in story telling.
His central point to me is around the impossibility to create real, deep, human connections and be able to establish a channel of communication: you feel that no matter how hard you try to connect to another human being, you are destined to fail.
Although we should know better, we will use tricks and deception and in the end we will have distorted and ruined any chance we had of creating a real and honest relationship...at that point, he goes even deeper. Is it really just communication or it is impossible for us to communicate because objectivity does not exist and reality is flawed by eyes that look at it?
Tanikazi characters always feel old (of advanced age) to me even when they are not based on their age (although this book is about an older couple). Their impossibility and the fact that they are trapped in their behavior and tricks and ideas makes them old.
Tanizaki is a master in story telling.

Is it really just communication or it is impossible for us to communicate because objectivity does not exist and reality is flawed by eyes that look at it?
Tanikazi characters always feel old (of advanced age) to me even when they are not based on their age (although this book is about an older couple). Their impossibility and the fact that they are trapped in their behavior and tricks and ideas makes them old.

It's funny to read a two-diary he-said she-said novel so soon after reading John Fowles' "The Collector." In that one, the idea of the unreliable narrator is stronger; here we seem to have reliable narrators, until the stunning denouement proves at least one of them to be intentionally misleading - for a purpose that would be a spoiler. And it's a fairly astonishing purpose. This is a story about the tragic results of poor marital communication and divergent needs, though at heart the needs of both spouses are the same. The gamesmanship is played subtly, there's an Asian delicacy to this subterfuge...The book is erotic, sort of, but not prurient (whatever that means anymore). The sadness and the clinical elements in it kept me from becoming aroused by it, per se. The story is told in the simplest language. There are no complex words or sentences. And yet there's a great patience and talent for description in the expression of actions and feelings. I'm tempted to give this short, fast-to-read novel five stars, but must think on it for now. I thank a great friend for recommending this to me. She has an uncannily good taste, it seems to me.

My first Tanizaki book and it didn’t disappoint. A subtle, erotic story about the emotional extremes or games a couple will go to to enhance the excitement of their sexual life. Only not in a vulgar way. This is an early 20th century Japanese novel that compares traditional and moral values with egocentric urges and desires to create a stimulating tale. And true to Classical Japanese, it’s all in the nuances and subtleties that the characters (and the reader) are stimulated. It’s hard to comment on this novella in detail without ruining the plot, just know that it’s not about the sex or anything that lewd, but about the desires and about the games people can play to enhance those desires. Having said that, there is also a layer of family dynamics and relationships that makes these actions and choices all the more interesting. Oh, and it’s all told in a diary format; two diaries to be exact, that of husband and that of wife.

Odd little book.
Middle aged couple reconnect through wife getting blind drunk and hubbie then ravishes her as she pretends he is hubbies best mate. Their daughter brokers an affair between her mother and the best mate whilst hubbie is incapacitated through a stroke.
Daughter may know best mate quite well - she is suspiciously clued up on love hotels
Husband dies and daughter plans to marry best mate, and wife/mother/lover will move in with the both of them in a menage a trois.
I may have missed something.
