I read this book on the recommendation of a reliable friend. SO glad I did. I'm not one to discuss the plots and characters in any detail, as I hate spoilers of any kind before I read a book, so suffice it to say that this father/daughter story of a criminal raising a girl child on his own grabbed me in such surprising ways. This book was on the Washington Post's summer reading list, which is why I read it. I have read a lot of crime books, and am not bothered by a lot of blood, but this book just seemed gruesome to me. I will not recommend it to anyone, and may even warn a few people away.

This book has long been on my TBR, but it took my book discussion to bring it to the top. I even helped name this through a RH survey. (This was not the original title, but I don't remember what was.)
Alternating chapters expose Samuel Hawley's past and the circumstances in which he was on the receiving end of 12 bullets. The other chapters bring in his daughter Loo and more present day.

This book was compelling but not in a page-turner kind of way. The writing is excellent and wanting to learn more about the characters is its greatest strength. I was not a huge fan of the ending, though I don't believe there was really a better way to conclude things.
