The version of A New Hope I have is 178 pages. This one is 247. Mine is not abridged, I checked all over. What could be the answer...?

Eldon Callaway Jens Raab answered it pretty well. I was surprised when my own novel of 326 pages turned into 245. The word count was still the same, almost 6,000 more than the first Harry Potter book, and yet, much less pages.
Jens Raab It is normal for different editions of books to have a varying page count.
Reasons can be font size, dimensions of the book, size of margins, illustrations (sometimes taking up an entire page), empty pages between chapters, etc.
Here's an overview of editions of the novel in question:
As you can see your edition is at the lower page limit while the one with 247 pages is at the upper limit (among the stand-alone English language editions).
So you're looking at the two extreme cases. ;-)
