Judith Rich
Judith Rich asked:

I'm puzzled by a reference near the end to Mrs Robert Martin (nee Harriet Smith) naming a child after her father, John. It's a while since I read "Emma", but my memory is that Harriet is illegitimate. Is PD James trying to hint that her father was Mr Knightley?!

Andra No, Mr Knightley is definitely not Harriet's father, lol. From what I remember, she rediscovers her father at the very end of the book - I believe he is a merchant or otherwise a man in trade.
