It is not historical fiction, they mention Popes that did exist up to Benedict so it would be contemporary.
I'd rather discuss thriller ;-) - to me, yes, it is, but is not gory, no dead bodies all over (just a Pope died in his sleep, natural cause) - it is like political thriller/drama, just to set the right expectations.
