I agree that this chapter, dramatic and incredibly gripping, is difficult to justify. The same would be true of the horse autopsy. Haruf seems to have written both to further fill out our appreciation of the characters involved and their relationships. I liked these parts for that reason, but unless they were just meant as a slice of the tough life of Plains folks (plain folks) they would, conventionally have had a clearer tie to the story line.
