Not at all sure - dreadful book. Maybe to do with The Emperor’s clothes syndrome ? Author trying to be clever so of course it would be considered for an award despite being very poorly written.

I felt it was rather scrappy & dull when I started but I carried on with it because I’d picked it for my books club. I tried again and I found out how everyone mal was so soul

The book did not win an award for being a page-turner; for one of those stories that captures you, takes you away to a different place and let's you be a different person for the while of the book. If you're reading for a story like that, this book will be hard to enjoy and probably isn't for you.
The plot is not what this book is about; it's more a collage of different events over time and canny observations and placing them together allows for new perspectives. I think this is why the book won an award, because this aspect is expertly done: The structure of the book, the weaving of different events effortlessly together. On top of that the sentences and play with words are beautiful. The book is trying to tell us something, but at the same time it's leaving most of the thinking to the reader. The skill of the author is immense!
I feel like I do not fully understand the book myself yet, so I hope I'm making sense. For this reason, reading felt at times frustrating, but I will read this book again when I've learned more about it - to fully appreciate it. Also, I can't stop thinking about it.

I also did not enjoy this skatty book and was glad it was short and didn't waste any more of my reading time. I not only cannot see how it merited any awards, I don't see how it even merited a publisher.
