Not really, his ending was mentioned at the end of the first book [Beartown] and at the beginning of this one we got the explanation of how he got there, he moved on and out of Beartown.

The author seemed to want to show how he was still impacting them, even when he was removed from the picture. And it made some sense that one of them would have to leave. The reveal was just too big for a small town.
