I read this first when I was 12 and I can tell you it's a wonderful experience. As long as your child is mature enough to read heaps of fantasy politics (government vs religion primarily), he will be perfectly fine.
A softer landing into epic fantasy might be the hobbit or the Name of the Wind. As soon as your kid reads Elantris they'll want to read all Sanderson's books, and some of them can be pretty hefty- such as the Stormlight Archive.
Honestly, I don't see an issue. Elantris was fun to read at 12 for me, and your kid will probably love it was well.
