How do you decide when you will use the first person narrator as opposed to the third person?

I’m very comfortable writing in the first person. It feels more natural to me, and it’s the intuitive way to tell a character-based story. But sometimes the story requires the reader to know something that Reacher hasn’t yet discovered. If that’s the case, I’ll use third person. Third person allows the reader to essentially see around corners.

I think I've read 16 books in your series, and I can't stop being curious about how you've come to be so well-versed on all things U.S. Military; specifically the varying philosophies between the different branches. How did you do your research? Does your family have a military background? Also, how do you choose between 1st and 3rd person when you begin a project?
