Look at how other authors write and then come up with a style that suits you.
Some authors plan everything in advance, right down to eye colour, red herrings and ending...I can't do that...it's not the right way for me to write, it suits some but not all; if someone tells you "This is the only way" walk, and find your own voice, narration and writing style.
