Honestly, I think the book is amazing even if you have never listened to any of the musical numbers in it. If anything, the musical numbers will be much more meaningful if you listen to them after reading the book.

I started reading it, and then listened to the musical, and honestly I think it's better if you *don't* know the musical first. Because the songs are so powerful, it kind of takes away from the story.

I personally did, but I don't think you need to. You could read it as a stand alone book with no knowledge of the show and it would make sense.
