By lots of different things. Sometimes it's from reading another book and thinking I want to try and write a story like that, but looking at things from a different angle, or asking the what if a different choice was made, or if characters had a different background, sometimes it's from the many weird dreams I have that lead to interesting story ideas, and other times it's pondering a difficult social, moral or ethical question that leads me to want to write a story to explore it.
