It has been in fashion for quite some years. It makes me feel like the authors care more about themselves and their artistic flare than us, the actual readers :(

It shouldn't work, but it somehow does. I also like how effortlessly she throws in backstory and I never lose track.

It wouldn't bother me if the dialogue wasn't so bland; as others have noted, many writers do this. Reading this novel was taxing because I kept losing interest in who was speaking.

I got used to the no quotations but it sometimes threw me off when Connell would answer with no, yeah.

I 'read' the audiobook and I don't think you can detect the lack of speech marks. Try this if the punctuation is bugging you.

The author is Irish and this is typical for European writers, especially French.

It bugs me so much but you will get used to it if you push through!! I can't work out any reason why Rooney would chose not to use them!
