Well technically the fist Hercule Poirot story was The Chocolate Box written in 1909 but this was a short story. This was indeed the first novel however written in 1916 but not published until 1920. There isn't really any continuity to worry about in the series so you can read them in any order you like.

There are several errors in Jared's list. The two most noticeable ones are that The Chocolate Box is SET before Stiles, but was NOT written before Stiles. Stiles was the first Poirot story that Christie wrote. Also, Curtain was not written in 1974; it was written during WW2.
