I was raised in a religious (Southern Baptist) background so I'm starting at a different viewpoint than you. I will say that the more you know about religion... Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism the more you will understand the book and the humour within. Think of it like Mel Brooks... theres a mix of wit, intellect, slapstick, and tawdry humour so that even if you don't get every single joke you will still enjoy it.
Each year my Easter tradition (since I'm not going to cross the threshold of a church again) is to read or listen to this book again and each time there is a new detail I pick up on even after 5+ reads.
