I enjoyed the book, and look forward to reading the other two in the series. However, is it just me, or did the relationship between Matthew and Diana resemble another vampire/warmblood couple from a different series? His protectiveness, etc. were all very reminiscent of Edward. And her actions/emotions towards him reminded me of Bella Swan.

Karen I never read the Twilight series...but from my experience reading several vampire series...it's par for the course...Vampires are protective. As for this series....loving the flow of the characters, love she uses actual historical books as reference.
George Haven't read Twilight, just read about it. Have read and often enjoyed plenty of other YA.

When I read this trilogy, I found nothing immature or simplistic about the central relationship. If we see every story about a protective male and a woman who loves him as nothing but a Twilight clone--particularly when that series is simply the most recently popular in a long, long string--we've criminally reduced the scope of literary criticism.
Jennifer YES, yes, yes- plus the whole pregnancy thing. It seems very Twilight. A forbidden romance.
DeeRae YES, I was going to ask this same question but double checked that it wasn't on here already. You beat me to it!
Amanda Artist Cat Absolutely not. Throughout the book is a power play between Diana and Matthew, it's not all submission and domination. In the beginning Diana had all of the flaws and fears that came from childhood trauma and she was indeed overpowered by Matthew's possessiveness, but later in the book when she rediscovered herself, she got on even footing with him - he might call himself dangerous, but she proved that she was a match for it all.

Also, Edward Cullen was never actually dangerous - he's practically vegetarian, for God's sake - but Matthew does have his violent past and a long list of victims - human and witch. I feel like Twilight really spoiled the reputation of vampire romance, and it's quite unfair to compare this book with that rubbish.
