I'm also big into mythology so all the Rick Riordan books are great and he's got Greek, Roman, and Egyptian covered! All very well written and the Greek actually do a few cross-overs into the Roman series so that was fun.

Try The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss or Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. They are both fantasy, with a bit of 'magic' mixed in. No witches or vampires though.

If you liked this, you might also enjoy the Glamourist Histories by Mary Robinette Kowal. The first one is Shades of Milk and Honey. It's historical fantasy set in the time of Napolean... but with magic. Witty repartee, a lovely, well-researched historical setting, sweet romance, and interesting character dilemmas.

Sorcery of Thorns and Lirael are both extremely good and deal with magical forces loosed in libraries. They both have excellent worldbuilding, writing and plot as well. I am not sure I agree with many of the other recommendations for "books like this" as they are mainly for fantasy books that contain magic as opposed to dealing with similar subjects (and equally good writing).

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell has the same epic writing voice, I think, and there is an amazing against-all-odd love story.

Since you've read the series, I have a question.. Is this a stand alone series or would we (my book club) have to read the entire series to get the full story? I like the sound of this book for an October read, but don't want to have to read a full series.
