I just want to say in response to the person who thinks this question is silly, some people have specific fears/anxiety triggers and this happens to be one of the big ones. Anyone who has witnessed animal abuse or been in a traumatic incident involving an animal may want to avoid reading it because it causes distress. No biggie.

Has everybody forgotten about the raccoon, which dies a gruesome and gruesomely detailed death? OK, I guess it's dead already when we first see it, but you know what I mean about gruesome details.

technically there is actually minor animal abuse mentioned, but it wasn't particularly hard to read. spoiler: two children spray paint a dog, but the dog is fine. the parents talk to the kids about it. also, the family dog does get harmed by rats in the beginning, which is pretty gruesome but he survives.

Not really. There is one teenage character who spray paints a dog, but the dog is okay. Other than that there are no humans abusing animals in the book.

There are a few gory and rather disturbing scenes with animals involved, a raccoon was eaten in a very unpleasant way and a dog was attacked by rats. But there is no animal abuse. All the bad things happened to humans.
