Yes, you should read Gilead first.

Read Gilead, Home, and Lila, in that order. That is publication order. I believe Gilead was published first, Home second, and Lila most recently. Though Marilynne Robinson states that any book in the trilogy is an entry point into the story. Therefore you can read them in any order.

I read Lila, then Home, and am now reading Gilead. This is not the way they were written, but I can't imagine it any other way.

I just watched Marilynne Robinson talk at the Wisconsin Book Festival and she said it is her intention that a person can pick up any one of the books and read each independently of the others. Any book, any order, NO order. haha
