Am i the only person who fails to understand why this book is considered a classic, to me it was boring and tedious and the plot failed to engross me as many other books have?

I grew up in 1950-60 and it was a different kind of book for its time and it created the same kind of reader opinions then as now. The responses were wide and intense, and was one of the most talked about books. I think that's why it became a classic, because it triggered such intense like or dislike, not only then and in the present. I sometimes wonder if Salinger intended to create this kind of responses from readers.(less)
