And I've cried in H-Mart too
Kewannah
Yes. I've even cried in HMart so it's touching a nerve
Christine
The H Mart in midtown is a gift
Delia
Yes, whenever I visit my family in Queens. Many metro areas with large Asian populations have H-Marts and they're really popular with the diaspora because of how well-stocked they are. I live in Minneapolis and wish we had one nearby (even though we already have lots of good independent Asian grocery stores here).

The H Mart that Michelle refers to is in Elkins Park (just outside of Philly) and the shopping center is full of gems. When you enter, there is a tiny dumpling shop on the left side called Gayeon Mandoo. It's delicious! There is also a dessert place (again tiny space), ran by older Korean women. I typically buy their rice cakes/treat and am never disappointed. It's a great place to explore and get lost.

I want to read this book because of the spectrum of feelings I get in H-Mart

I grew up shopping in H-mart with my mom and family - so many great memories. Today, I can't go in there without crying (I lost my Korean mother to cancer as well) but it's also so nostalgic and filled with good memories.
Anne
Yes they have them in Boston.
Wendy
Yes! You could spend hours in H-Mart between eating and shopping.
Olivia
I've shopped there but never cried in one.
Melissa
Yes - at least once a month actually
Dave S
YES. A must-go place for real Asian staples. We have dozens in NYC & NJ
Yuko Shimizu
There is one two blocks from my apartment. I get my basic Asian groceries, like, every week.
Krondokiller
Yes, often. In Gaithersburg, MD (suburban DC). No Asians in my family, we just like going there and trying unfamiliar foods, though wish we had an H Mart Whisperer when shopping who could explain ingredients. Fresh mint, dill, and basil are great deals even if not so exotic. Store has a strong "aroma"--think fish, meats, produce, so I can imagine sensory triggers.

I have shopped at H Mart a few times, the only one I have ever been to is the one in Elkins Park referenced in this book I could picture it to a T, including all of the businesses on the first floor. Interesting and fun at anytime of day (unless you are crying).
Caroline
YES, I go there often to get my Korean food! I'm lucky to be near two H marts! No crying there yet but maybe crying quietly in happiness...
Shelby
Yes! I l worked in a town that had a large Korean population (40-50% of the community is Korean), so H-Mart was my go-to grocery store for almost 5 years.

I cry in Lotte Plaza in Centreville, VA. Here's what Bunny LaRue had to say about that particular store:
"Lotte Plaza is great. I have seen no less than two fist fights there. When they first opened I made the mistake of trying to get some shrimp, I nearly lost my arm."
The aisles in the produce department are so narrow that grocery shopping is a contact sport.

Yes, we have a few H-Marts in Chicago and surrounding suburbs. I love that they typically have happy k-pop on which makes you feel like grocery shopping is a delight and joy. Before covid there were older Korean women who would serve samples and they seemed so invested and happy with the food they were passing out that you wanted to buy anything they were serving .. and it was always something delicious. I always want to buy all the snacks and all the beverages. It is such a fund store.
Noodles
Yes, it's a great mart. Great enough to cry in :)

Is it a requirement to read this book?
nonso elelleh
Yes I grew up my whole life living in predominantly Asian communities and my family always shopped for produce at H Mart and other traditionally Asian markets. Although I'm not Asian myself, I always looked forward to eating the yummy snacks as a kid and even now!
April
Weekly. I love H Mart.
Cher
I shop in H-Mart quite often, and I can relate the sentiments Michelle has when she’s there. Definitely have cried seeing families eating together in the H-Mart food court
David
I Love H-Mart! I was just there this week.
Anna Huynh
yes and be prepared to buy a lot of delicious food!
Mel
As often as possible.
Jean Sanders
I love HMart! It's a little like taking a trip, without the airfare and the time off work!
Anne
Yes! My husband is Japanese, and it is the best place to get the taste of home in the mid-Atlantic.
Susan
yes - at least monthly
Reagen Ward
About every other week, yup.
Stewart Mason
Yes, I've been shopping in H-Marts ever since they first appeared in Boston several years ago. They're great.
Lynn Hall
It's absolutely the most fun and fascinating store ever, and I go to my local one every chance I get. I'm not Asian, but I love Korean food. The book captured it so perfectly.
Susan
I have never heard of H Mart. There are none in my state of Maine.
Kitty Johnson
I shop about once month! I must have lunch in food court before I leave.
Laurie Shook
Yes. It's a great adventure for an otherwise boring weekend. Unusual vegetables and fruits to discover, cold and creepy seafood to gawk at, and a mandatory purchase of Japanese mochi and Korean moisturizing masks.
Richard Chang
Um, yes. That's what makes the title so resonant!
