Um, is there any English* writer - writing about the present day - who understands that there an awful lot of English people whose children do not go to university, have gap years, are spoiled. And many families do not have dishwashers/credit cards/ foreign holidays?

This is a fair point, noted by the Guardian in 2015 (). The only modern day book I have read by an English writer that I can think of that defies this is Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman.
