I was a struggle to read this book. Did anyone else had the same experience?

Kim Same experience for me. I eventually just stopped reading it. I have a lot of books on my to-read shelf that were calling my name.
Judith Yes, I could not sustain interest or engagement in this story, & put it down/picked it back up several times before quitting at 50%. I'm an avid reader of all genres on all levels, but couldn't connect with this one.
Linda Eguchi No, no struggle at all for me. I was totally engaged. A fabulous read. Colson Whitehead is brilliant.

Loved The Underground Railroad as well. Totally different, just as brilliant.
Anjanette Agree. I couldn't follow the plot (there wasn't much of one). It seemed like the first draft of a novel that needed a lot of work.
Gail Burgess It took me a bit longer to get into it, but I am glad I finished it. Carney was a pretty interesting guy.
Sam Kelley I was quite engaged from the beginning. I think it was the asides that hooked me "[she] cooked the way she did most things, with a healthy sprinkling of spite." "By sunrise he had dumped the body...per the local custom." I was rooting for Ray, worrying about Freddie, and proud of Elizabeth. I also loved learning about the ins and outs of being a crook - it's hard to get rid of hot merchandise sometimes...
Phil Neely I had the same problem. I couldn't wait for it to end. I enjoyed The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys.
Jill Shriver I wasn’t very engaged thru the first half, but finally this homage to NYC, Harlem civil unrest and mention of real mid-century events hooked me. I didn’t want it to end. I loved Carney and the tightrope he walked. (Read Underground Railroad, but not Nickel Boys. Also, my daughter lived in NYC for 11 years and a few of them on 87th and Amsterdam.)
Diana Fisher Yes! I started this book twice. The second time I got more than halfway through it but finally gave up.
