Lori Orr-Chavez asked Chris Bohjalian:

What do you think makes a good ghost story and which are your favorites? I watched Starve Acre last night but haven't read the book. It has been described as "upsetting folk horror." This may be a new genre for writers to explore!

Chris Bohjalian I've only written two ghost stories -- Hangman and The Night Strangers -- and so I'm not expert on what makes a good one. My favorite ghost story is likely Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and I think what makes it so terrifying (and moving) is the sense that you never quite see what walks alone there, but it sure gets deep into Eleanor's mind.
